Bacterial coinfection complicated nearly all influenza deaths in the 1918 influenza pandemic and up to 34% of 2009 pandemic influenza A(H1N1) infections managed in intensive care units worldwide. More than 65,000 deaths attributable to influenza and pneumonia occur annually in the United States. Data from 683 critically ill patients with 2009 pandemic influenza A(H1N1) infection admitted to 35 intensive care units in the United States reveal that bacterial coinfection commonly occurs within the first 6 days of influenza infection, presents similarly to influenza infection occurring alone, and

The masking of deleterious mutations by complementation and the reassortment of virus segments (virus sex) are expected to increase population genetic diversity among coinfecting viruses. Conversely, clonally reproducing or noncoinfecting virus populations may experience clonal interference where viral clones compete with one another, preventing selective sweeps. This dynamic reduces the efficiency of selection and increases the genetic diversity. To determine the relative influences of these forces on population genetic diversity, we evolved 6 populations of bacteriophage φ6 under conditions

To investigate the association of leprosy with hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection, as yet unknown for South Brazil, we assessed hepatitis B virus coinfection in 199 South Brazilian leprosy patients (119 lepromatous, 15 tuberculoid, 30 borderline, 12 undetermined and 23 unspecified) and in 681 matched blood donors by screening for the hepatitis B virus markers HBSAg and anti-HBc, using ELISA. Positive samples were retested and anti-HBc+ only samples were tested for the hepatitis B surface antibody (anti-HBs). There was a strong association between leprosy and hepatitis B virus infection (OR=9.8,

We communicate the diagnosis by microscopy of a pulmonary coinfection produced by Cryptococcus neoformans and Pneumocystis jiroveci, from a respiratory secretion obtained by bronchoalveolar lavage of an AIDS patient. Our review of literature identified this coinfection as unusual presentation. Opportunistic infections associated with HIV infection are increasingly recognized. It may occur at an early stage of HIV-infection. Whereas concurrent opportunistic infections may occur, coexisting Pneumocystis jiroveci pneumonia (PCP) and disseminated cryptococcosis with cryptococcal pneumonia is uncom

OBJECTIVES: Analysis and identification of factors associated with the tuberculosis (TB) recurrence in HIV-infected patients.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: The HIV-infected patients diagnosed with TB between 1995-2000 and with correct completion of the treatment were selected. There were compared those patients who presented a tuberculous disease recurrence with those which did not presented it. Multivariate analysis was carried out by logistic regression in order to identify factors associated with a new episode of TB.
RESULTS: In the total sample of 223 diagnosed HIV-infected patients with TB, 159

Individuals suffering from severe viral respiratory tract infections have recently emerged as "at risk" groups for developing invasive fungal infections. Influenza virus is one of the most common causes of acute lower respiratory tract infections worldwide. Fungal infections complicating influenza pneumonia are associated with increased disease severity and mortality, with invasive pulmonary aspergillosis being the most common manifestation. Strikingly, similar observations have been made during the current coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic. The copathogenesis of respiratory viral a

BACKGROUND: Viral respiratory infections, especially acute bronchiolitis, play a key role in the development of asthma in childhood. However, most studies have focused on respiratory syncytial virus or rhinovirus infections and none of them have compared the long-term evolution of single versus double or multiple viral infections.
OBJECTIVE: Our aim was to compare the frequency of asthma development at 6-8 years in children with previous admission for bronchiolitis associated with single versus double or multiple viral infection.
PATIENTS & METHODS: A cross-sectional study was performed in 2

BACKGROUND: The current understanding of airborne tuberculosis (TB) transmission is based on classic 1950s studies in which guinea pigs were exposed to air from a tuberculosis ward. Recently we recreated this model in Lima, Perú, and in this paper we report the use of molecular fingerprinting to investigate patient infectiousness in the current era of HIV infection and multidrug-resistant (MDR) TB.
METHODS AND FINDINGS: All air from a mechanically ventilated negative-pressure HIV-TB ward was exhausted over guinea pigs housed in an airborne transmission study facility on the roof. Animals had

The HIV pandemic has been associated with a rise in the prevalence of primary and recurrent cryptococcosis. Evidence-based treatment algorithms exist for the use of antifungal drugs and maintaining normal intracranial pressure in HIV-infected hosts with cryptococcal meningitis. Further investigation is needed for the treatment of cases with refractory infections and cryptococcosis-related immune reconstitution syndrome, along with the optimal use of adjuvant therapies. Primary and secondary prevention strategies remain at the crux of global control strategies for cryptococcal disease.

HIV coinfection is associated with faster progression of liver disease resulting from hepatitis B virus (HBV) or hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection. Thus, liver complications have become a major cause of illness and death in coinfected patients. Controlling HIV through highly active antiretroviral therapy may slow disease progression to nearly the rate of HIV-negative persons. Several antiretroviral regimens have been associated with drug-induced liver injury, however, which is more common in patients coinfected with hepatitis B or C. After development of cirrhosis and decompensation, survival

A 32 year old male, positive for human immunodeficiency virus (mY) antibodies, was found to be positive for multiple opportunistic infections by a parasite and a fungi, which is a very rare occurrence. Cryptosporidium and Geotrichum were simultaneously detected from his stool and sputum respectively.

Tuberculosis (TB) remains the leading cause of death worldwide from a single bacterial agent. However, an estimated one-quarter of the world's population carries an asymptomatic form of TB. In this state, the host maintains a chronic inflammatory lung environment in which the infection is contained and may even be cleared. TB can be lifelong; thus, patients are likely to contract superinfection by another pathogen. It is therefore relevant to investigate the impact of Mycobacterium tuberculosis (Mtb), the bacterium responsible for TB, on the host's capacity to cope with a second infectious age

Patients with poorly controlled human immunodeficiency virus are subject to a wide range of opportunistic infections. Cryptosporidium is a parasitic gastrointestinal infection associated with chronic and life-threatening diarrhea in patients with acquired immunodeficiency syndrome. Cytomegalovirus colitis is a serious complication caused by reactivation of the virus, leading to viremia and end-organ disease by hematogenous spread. Both diseases can be fatal in less than 4 months. We present an example of a comprehensive investigation in a patient with symptoms that could not be explained in a

Lyme disease in North America is caused by infection with the spirochetal bacterium Borrelia burgdorferi and transmitted by Ixodes scapularis and Ixodes pacificus ticks. These ticks also have the potential to transmit a rapidly expanding list of other pathogenic bacteria, viruses, and parasites, including Anaplasma phagocytophilum, Babesia microti, deer tick (Powassan) virus, Borrelia miyamotoi, and the Ehrlichia muris-like organism. Coinfections with B burgdorferi and these other agents are often difficult to diagnose and may go untreated, and thus contribute significantly to patient morbidit

Helminth-induced immunomodulation is thought to influence the outcome of secondary infections. Osborne et al. (2014) and Reese et al. (2014) demonstrate that helminth infection impacts viral infections by tilting the immune system toward Th2/M2 immune regulatory responses that dampen Th1/M1 antiviral responses as well as promote reactivation of latent herpesviruses.

HIV and hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection share transmission patterns and risk factors; therefore, it is not surprising that the prevalence of chronic HBV infection is elevated among HIV-infected persons. HBV does not significantly affect the course of HIV disease, but HIV does alter the course of HBV. HIV-infected persons are less likely to clear acute HBV infection spontaneously, and HIV/HBV-coinfected persons face a higher risk of liver-related death than those monoinfected with either virus. The immune restoration associated with highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART) can improve con

Bacterial coinfections occur in respiratory viral infections, but the attack rates and the clinical profile are not clear. The aim of this study was to determine bacterial coinfections in children hospitalized for acute expiratory wheezing with defined viral etiology. A total of 220 children aged 3 months to 16 years were investigated. The viral etiology of wheezing was confirmed by viral culture, antigen detection, serologic investigation, and/or PCR. Specific antibodies to common respiratory bacteria were measured from acute and convalescent serum samples. All children were examined clinical

The pathogens that cause Lyme disease (LD), human anaplasmosis, and babesiosis can coexist in Ixodes ticks and cause human coinfections. Although the risk of human coinfection differs by geographic location, the true prevalence of coinfecting pathogens among Ixodes ticks remains largely unknown for the majority of geographic locations. The prevalence of dually infected Ixodes ticks appears highest among ticks from regions of North America and Europe where LD is endemic, with reported prevalences of < or =28%. In North America and Europe, the majority of tick-borne coinfections occur among huma
