This paper details the first case report of a patient with fulminant, gangrenous, ischemic colitis caused by polyarteritis nodosa which was successfully treated surgically. Ischemic colitis is a rare complication of polyarteritis nodosa. It should be suspected in patients with a past history of polyarteritis nodosa who develop abdominal pain and rectal bleeding. The identification of cutaneous lesions preoperatively and or mesenteric or serosal vascular beading at operation are helpful in establishing this diagnosis. Prognosis is generally determined by the extent of systemic involvement by po

Ischemic colitis is a disease in which local tissue in the intestinal wall dies to varying degrees due to insufficient blood supply to the colon. Risk factors include cardiovascular disease, diabetes, chronic kidney disease, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, etc. Typical clinical manifestations of the disease are abdominal pain and hematochezia. The most common locations are the watershed areas of splenic flexure and rectosigmoid junction. The lesions are segmental and clearly demarcated from normal mucosa under endoscopy. The digestive tract is a common extra-pulmonary organ affected by

Ischemic colitis (IC) is an ischemic injury to the colon caused by an occlusive arterial blood supply or blocked venous return. Colonoscopic manifestations most frequently include colonic mucosal edema and erosion, while tubular channels are rare. It is also known as colon cast, and doctors often misdiagnose it when they encounter it. The present study presents a rare form of IC. An 80-year-old man visited The Affiliated People's Hospital of Ningbo University (Ningbo, China) due to abdominal pain and bloody stools. He had no significant comorbidities and had not taken medication. Physical exam

Cytomegalovirus (CMV) colitis is a common entity in immunocompromised patients, being rare among immunocompetent individuals. In addition, its association with ischemic colitis is unusual in both groups of population. Rectal bleeding might occur in both entities and, occasionally, urgent surgical treatment may be required, associating high morbility rates. We report one case of cytomegalovirus colitis associated with severe ischemic colitis in a non- immunocompromised patient with favourable response to conservative management with antiviral therapy.

"Cat scratch colon" is a gross finding characterized by hemorrhagic mucosal scratches on colonoscopy. It is usually associated with a normal colon and is rarely associated with collagenous colitis. In a previous report, cat scratch colon was noted in the cecum and ascending colon, but has also been observed in the distal transverse colon. The patient in this study was also diagnosed with ischemic colitis that may have played a role in the development of cat scratch colon.

BACKGROUND/AIMS: Ischemic colitis includes a wide clinical spectrum ranging from mild to severe forms. This study aimed to determine the factors that are related to the occurrence of severe ischemic colitis.
METHODS: This multicenter study was conducted retrospectively in Korea. The patients were divided into mild and severe groups. This study surveyed clinical characteristics, blood tests, endoscopic findings, and imaging studies.
RESULTS: In the comparison of comorbidities, the severe group had a higher ratio of chronic kidney disease than the mild group (p=0.001). In the blood test, the s

BACKGROUND: Ischemic colitis is the most common form of intestinal ischemia. The presence of diarrhea and mild lower gastrointestinal bleeding should guide the diagnosis. Although many laboratory tests and radiographic images may suggest the diagnosis, colonic endoscopic with histological analysis of biopsies is the gold standard for identification of colonic ischemia. aim : The aim of this study was to resume in 5 points: the epidemiology, the clinical features, the diagnostic approach and the management of ischemic colitis in five points. methods: Review of literature. results: Incidence of

A 58-year-old man came to our hospital, complaining of diarrhea and bloody stool of about 2 weeks' duration. Colonoscopic examination showed mucosal edema and bleeding, and irregular ulcer in the transverse colon and sigmoid colon. Laboratory data indicated elevated WBC (22300/mm(3)) and CRP (11.93mg/dl), and hypereosinophilia (30%). We diagnosed ischemic colitis with thrombosis due to hypereosinophilic syndrome. He started medication with prednisolone and heparin. However, after 15 days, he underwent emergency surgery because of perforation of the sigmoid colon. Thrombosis is associated with

PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to analyze various clinical characteristics of ischemic colitis according to its location.
METHODS: The medical records of 92 cases of gastrointestinal ischemic colitis (IC) diagnosed at Bundang CHA Hospital from 1995 to 2008 were reviewed and analyzed retrospectively. The patients were diagnosed by using colonoscopic biopsies or laparotomy findings. The patients were divided into two groups, right and left, according to the main involvement area of the IC at the embryologic boundary line of the distal transverse colon, and the two groups were compared as to

Ischemic colitis is the most common form of ischemic injury of the gastrointestinal tract and can present either as an occlusive or a non-occlusive form. It accounts for 1 in 1000 hospitalizations but its incidence is underestimated because it often has a mild and transient nature. The etiology of ischemic colitis is multifactorial and the clinical presentation variable. The diagnosis is based on a combination of clinical suspicion, radiographic, endoscopic and histological findings. Therapy and outcome depends on the severity of the disease. Most cases of the non-gangrenous form are transient

BACKGROUND: Melanosis Coli is described as black or brown discolouration of the mucosa of the colon. Its a benign condition, which arises from anthraquinone laxative abuse and has no symptoms of its own. The main importance of diagnosing Melanosis Coli correctly lies in the fact that if its extensive, there may be difficulty in differentiating it from ischemic colitis.
CASE PRESENTATION: We present a case of extensive Melanosis Coli involving the whole of large bowel that appeared gangrenous. A sub total colectomy was performed on presumed diagnosis of ischemic bowel.
CONCLUSION: This report

Drugs such as alosetron that modulate serotonin effects by stimulating or blocking its receptors may play an important role in the treatment of some patients with irritable bowel system. In the case of alosetron, a 5HT-3 antagonist, an analysis of data from randomized clinical trials and postmarketing experiences have demonstrated a causal relationship between this drug and ischemic colitis and serious complications of constipation. Because the mechanism(s) of drug-induced ischemic colitis and possibly other forms of intestinal ischemia associated with alosetron have not been elucidated, there

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to describe the sonographic findings of 58 patients with proven ischemic colitis and to evaluate whether any of the findings are related to the presence or development of transmural necrosis.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: We reviewed the histories of patients diagnosed with ischemic colitis over a period of 5.5 years. Sixty-two patients had undergone sonographic examinations. The spectrum of sonographic findings in ischemic colitis was based on the original imaging report, with an analysis of the presence of colonic abnormalities and their associated alterati

Ischemic colitis following conservative management of sigmoid volvulus is documented in four cases. Repeat barium enema studies in these patients showed characteristic "thumbprinting", transverse ridging, and mucosal ulcerations within a segment or the entire length of the sigmoid, lasting up to 7 days after nonoperative decompression. The development, extent, and severity of the ischemic changes seem to correlate with the degree of volvulus, blockage of venous and arterial circulation in the sigmoid mesocolon, and increased intraluminal pressure.

Colonoscopy is a safe and effective diagnostic modality for various ileo-colonic diseases. Though the procedure itself is a rare cause of ischaemic colitis. Fewer than 30 cases of ischaemic colitis caused by colonoscopy procedure have been reported in the literature to date. The colon is susceptible to ischemia due to its minor blood flow compared to other organs in the abdomen. The etiology of colon ischemia after colonoscopy is multifactorial. Endoscopists must be aware of this condition and its risk factors for risk minimization, early diagnosis and proper treatment.
