Direct quantitative assessment of the peripheral artery collateral circulation in patients undergoing angiography.

BACKGROUND: Despite the fact that numerous studies have pursued the strategy of improving collateral function in patients with peripheral artery disease, there is currently no method available to quantify collateral arterial function of the lower limb. METHODS AND RESULTS: Pressure-derived collateral flow index (CFIp, calculated as (occlusive pressure-central venous pressure)/(aortic pressure-central venous pressure); pressure values in mm Hg) of the left superficial femoral artery was obtained in patients undergoing elective coronary angiography using a combined pressure/Doppler wire (n=30).

[Prevalence and significance of coronary collateral circulation in patients with acute myocardial infarct].

UNLABELLED: Angiograms from consecutive and unselected patients with acute myocardial infarction were studied with respect to the prevalence as well as the significance of coronary collateral circulation to myocardium distal to the acute coronary occlusion. METHODS: Coronary angiograms were obtained from 700 consecutive and unselected patients with an acute transmural infarction within 3.7 +/- 3 hours (0.5-12) of symptom onset. No patient had undergone i.v. thrombolysis prior to angiography. Complete and acute vessel occlusion was found in 626/700 patients (89%). Coronary collaterals were det

Embolization via collateral circulation during carotid stenting with the distal balloon protection system.

PURPOSE: To describe a potential route for embolization to the middle cerebral artery (MCA) during carotid stenting with the distal balloon protection system. CASE REPORT: An 82-year-old man with symptomatic severe carotid artery stenosis underwent elective carotid stenting with distal-balloon protection. Despite complete occlusion of the distal internal carotid artery, frequent emboli were detected in the ipsilateral MCA by transcranial Doppler (TCD) during the procedure. Intracranial angiography, performed during the distal-balloon protection, revealed filling of the MCA through collaterals

[Collateral circulation via the arterial network of the neck in subclavian artery occlusion].

The authors describe three different varieties of collateral circulation via the so called arterial network of the nape of the neck in patients with proximal subclavian artery occlusion. Attention is called to the importance of cervical veins visualization for the evaluation of the efficiency of the collateral circulation and prognosis about the further state of the patient. The authors propose a modification of angiography with additional films taken of the subclavian area in late arterial phase making possible to demonstrate the site of subclavian artery occlusion during carotid angiography.

Role of the coronary collateral circulation in the preservation of left ventricular function.

An angiographic assessment of the coronary arteries, the presence and quality of arterial collateralization and segmental left ventricular (LV) wall motion indicated that (a) in the presence of total or subtotal obstruction of a coronary artery, there was a significantly higher incidence of normal motion (p less than 0.001) if the segment of LV wall was supplied by good rather than poor collaterals, and (b) normal wall motion with good arterial collateralization was not associated with abnormal Q waves. It is concluded that a positive correlation exists between the quality of collateral fillin

Association Between Folate Metabolism Risk, Collateral Circulation, and Hemorrhagic Risk in Moyamoya Disease.

Methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase (MTHFR) and methionine synthase reductase (MTRR) polymorphisms are known risk factors for vascular diseases due to the impact on folate metabolism dysfunction and homocysteine (Hcy) accumulation. This study aimed to investigate the association between folate metabolism risk and hemorrhagic risk in moyamoya disease (MMD). In this prospective study, we enrolled 350 MMD patients with complete genotype data for MTHFR and MTRR. Patients were divided into non-hemorrhagic and hemorrhagic MMD groups. Folate metabolism risk was classified into three levels according

Relationship between peripancreatic collateral circulation development and aneurysm presence in celiac trunk stenosis.

OBJECTIVE: Celiac trunk (CeT) stenosis can lead to the development of collateral circulation and aneurysm formation through the pancreatic arteries; however, the relationship between specific collateral patterns and aneurysm development or rupture remains unclear. Here we evaluated the association between collateral circulation characteristics and aneurysm formation in patients with CeT stenosis. METHODS: This cross-sectional study included 233 patients with CeT stenosis from a single tertiary care center. The patients were categorized into ruptured aneurysm (n = 24), unruptured aneurysm (n =

Type 2 diabetes remodels collateral circulation and promotes leukocyte adhesion following ischemic stroke.

Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) is associated with impaired leptomeningeal collateral compensation and poor stroke outcome. Neutrophils tethering and rolling on endothelium after stroke can also independently reduce flow velocity. However, the chronology and topological changes in collateral circulation in T2DM is not yet defined. Here, we describe the spatial and temporal blood flow dynamics and vessel remodeling in pial arteries and veins and leukocyte-endothelial adhesion following middle cerebral artery (MCA) stroke using two-photon microscopy in awake control and T2DM mice. A collateral circulation in ischemic stroke accelerates recanalization due to lower clot compaction.

Collaterals improve recanalization in acute ischemic stroke patients treated with intravenous thrombolysis, but the mechanisms are poorly understood. To investigate it, an in vitro flow model of the middle cerebral artery was developed with or without collaterals. An occlusion was achieved using human blood clots. Recanalization time, thrombolysis (clot length decrease and red blood cell (RBC) release), pressure gradient across the clot and clot compaction were measured. Results showed that with or without collateral alteplase-treated RBC dominant clots showed recanalization time 98±23 min vs

Association between polymorphism in the MTHFR gene and encephaloduroarteriosynangiosis-induced collateral circulation formation.

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to investigate whether high homocysteine (Hcy) levels associated with the MTHFR gene influence the formation of the collateral vascular network in patients with moyamoya disease (MMD) after encephaloduroarteriosynangiosis (EDAS) by influencing the number of endothelial progenitor cells (EPCs) in peripheral blood. METHODS: A total of 118 Chinese patients with bilateral primary MMD were prospectively included. Blood samples were collected from the anterior cubital vein before surgery, and MTHFR rs9651118 was genotyped using high-throughput mass spectrometry to determ

Immune Cells Invade the Collateral Circulation during Human Stroke: Prospective Replication and Extension.

It remains unclear if principal components of the local cerebral stroke immune response can be reliably and reproducibly observed in patients with acute large-vessel-occlusion (LVO) stroke. We prospectively studied a large independent cohort of n = 318 consecutive LVO stroke patients undergoing mechanical thrombectomy during which cerebral blood samples from within the occluded anterior circulation and systemic control samples from the ipsilateral cervical internal carotid artery were obtained. An extensive protocol was applied to homogenize the patient cohort and to standardize the procedural

Guidelines for evaluation and management of cerebral collateral circulation in ischaemic stroke 2017.

Collateral circulation plays a vital role in sustaining blood flow to the ischaemic areas in acute, subacute or chronic phases after an ischaemic stroke or transient ischaemic attack. Good collateral circulation has shown protective effects towards a favourable functional outcome and a lower risk of recurrence in stroke attributed to different aetiologies or undergoing medical or endovascular treatment. Over the past decade, the importance of collateral circulation has attracted more attention and is becoming a hot spot for research. However, the diversity in imaging methods and criteria to ev
