Spontaneous Change in Density of Colloid Cyst: An Unusual Phenomenon.

BACKGROUND: Colloid cysts of the third ventricle are benign congenital lesions. They are at times totally asymptomatic or may be detected in the evaluation for headache, neurologic disturbances, or psychiatric disturbances. They may sometimes cause grave consequences such as coma or even sudden death. The radiologic appearance is unique and important for making decisions in the management. CASE DESCRIPTION: We report a patient with a colloid cyst who presented to us after sudden deterioration in consciouness. It was noted that he underwent brain computed tomography (CT) scan 10 months ago in

Nonspecific Headache Diagnosed as a Brain Colloid Cyst with Hydrocephalus.

A 29-year-old male presented to our emergency department with complaints of a left frontal headache, similar to his prior headaches. He also reported about 30 minutes of facial and tongue numbness, left arm weakness, slurred speech and changes in hearing that had resolved prior to his arrival. Despite the short duration of the other neurologic symptoms, he also endorsed persistent "dizziness." Despite his history of recurrent headaches, he had never had any neuroimaging. This, as well as his reports of new neurological symptoms, prompted his care team to obtain a non-contrast brain computed to

Magnetic resonance imaging of a colloid cyst of the third ventricle.

A case of an isodense non-enhancing colloid cyst of the third ventricle which was not easily diagnosed by computed tomography is described. The patient underwent magnetic resonance imaging which clearly showed a colloid cyst of the third ventricle with accompanying obstructive hydrocephalus. Such lesions are potentially life-threatening if undiagnosed. It is suggested that magnetic resonance imaging has an important role to play in rapidly and clearly demonstrating the location, size and complications of such lesions when there is doubt about the aetiology of obstructive hydrocephalus of the l

Endoscopically Treated Third Ventricle Colloid Cysts: A Systematic Review of Surgical and Clinical Outcomes.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Third ventricle colloid cysts (TVCCs) are benign lesions that may cause acute hydrocephalus and, rarely, sudden death. Endoscopic resection has emerged as a minimally invasive alternative to microsurgical approaches. This systematic review aimed to evaluate the safety and efficacy of endoscopic resection of TVCCs. METHODS: Following PRISMA guidelines, a systematic search of major databases was performed to identify studies reporting clinical outcomes of endoscopic resection of TVCCs. Extracted data included the surgical technique, extent of resection, complications, rec

Microsurgical versus endoscopic resection for paediatric colloid cysts: a meta-analysis of surgical outcomes.

BACKGROUND: Colloid cysts of the third ventricle are rare intracranial lesions, particularly uncommon in pediatric populations. Precise incidence figures in children remain uncertain, with existing data primarily derived from isolated case reports and limited case series. Pediatric colloid cysts generally present with a more aggressive clinical course, including hydrocephalus, increased intracranial pressure ICP, and even sudden death. Despite the low incidence, the high risk of life-threatening complications often necessitates surgical intervention. However, there is no consensus in the liter

Magnetic resonance characterization of the 'dot sign' in colloid cysts of the third ventricle.

PURPOSE: To determine the incidence of the 'dot sign' in patients with colloid cysts of the third ventricle and to characterise its MRI appearances. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Single institution retrospective analysis between January 2007 and October 2016 of all patients with either an imaging or imaging and histology-confirmed diagnosis of colloid cysts of the 3rd ventricle was undertaken. For all cases, MRI signal intensities of the cyst fluid component were graded by two independent radiologists relative to brain parenchyma. Presence of a dot, and if present, its size and relative position wit

Treatment of colloid cysts of the third ventricle through neuroendoscopic Nd: YAG laser stereotaxis.

OBJECTIVE: Colloid cysts (IIIVT CC) are benign neuroepithelial cysts located in the anterior third ventricle. The authors propose the use of Nd:YAG laser stereotactic neuroendoscopic for guided resection of the third ventricle colloid cysts. METHOD: Eleven patients presented third ventricle colloid cysts and were treated by Nd:YAG laser guided with stereotactic endoscopy (n=7) , stereotactic endoscopy (n=3) or stereotactly guided puncture (n=1). The patients were followed prospectively (average 33 months, range 19-64 months). The clinical data, neuroimaging findings, hospitalization stay, out

Treatment options for third ventricular colloid cysts: comparison of open microsurgical versus endoscopic resection.

OBJECTIVE: We retrospectively reviewed our experience treating third ventricular colloid cysts to compare the efficacy of endoscopic and transcallosal approaches. METHODS: Between September 1994 and March 2004, 55 patients underwent third ventricular colloid cyst resection. The transcallosal approach was used in 27 patients; the endoscopic approach was used in 28 patients. Age, sex, cyst diameter, and presence of hydrocephalus were similar between the two groups. RESULTS: The operating time and hospital stay were significantly longer in the transcallosal craniotomy group compared with the en

Urinary levels of phthalate esters and heavy metals in adolescents with thyroid colloid cysts.

We aimed to evaluate 14 urinary phthalate metabolites and 4 toxic metals in adolescents having thyroid colloid cyst (TCC) and compare with age and sex-matched others without TCC. Phthalate metabolites were analysed with UPLC-MS/MS and heavy metals with ICP-MS. TCC ratios in tertile subgroups of pollutants were compared with multiple logistic regression analysis after adjusting for age, sex, z-scores for body mass index and urinary creatinine values. Adolescents having the highest tertile of mono (2-ethylhexyl) phthalic acid and mercury had increased odds and those with the highest tertiles of

The Interhemispheric Transgenual Approach for Microsurgical Removal of Third Ventricle Colloid Cysts. Technical Note.

BACKGROUND: Colloid cysts of the third ventricle are rare benign lesions, which amount to approximately 1% of all intracranial tumors. Because these lesions grow predominantly in the anterior aspect of the third ventricle, they may cause the occlusion of the foramina of Monro, generating obstructive hydrocephalus. Surgery is mandatory in cases of large cysts and/or in symptomatic patients. Among the different surgical strategies described in colloid cysts surgery, the microsurgical transcallosal approach still constitutes the procedure of choice in many centers. In this study, we describe a mo

Endoscopic bimanual sharp dissection technique for gross-total resection of colloid cysts: technical note.

Neuroendoscopic resection of colloid cysts has gained tremendous popularity over the last 2 decades because of good clinical outcomes and a low complication profile. However, in comparison to microsurgical resections, endoscopic resection has a lower rate of gross-total resection, which leaves the patient at risk for cyst recurrence. At present, there is still ongoing debate as to the best surgical approach for colloid cysts. Endoscopic resection as a technique has to compete with the good outcomes of microsurgical resections with respect to a long-term recurrence-free outcome. It is the autho

Endoscopic resection of colloid cysts: indications, technique, and results during a 13-year period.

OBJECTIVE: Questions of recurrence and inadequacy of follow-up length persist regarding endoscopic treatment of colloid cysts. In this retrospective review, we report our long-term follow-up during a 13-year period in 35 patients who underwent endoscopic resection of colloid cysts. METHODS: The 19 males and 16 females (age range 14 to 58 years, mean 35.9 years) who had symptomatic colloid cysts that ranged in size from 5 mm to 4 cm underwent endoscopic resection in the period from 1991 to 2004. RESULTS: Of 2 patients who developed recurrences at 5.9 years and 4.3 years (1 and 6 mm, respectiv

A Rare Third Ventricular Dermoid Cyst in an Adult With Imaging Characteristics Consistent With a Colloid Cyst.

A 64-year-old male presented with spontaneous intracerebral hemorrhage and obstructive hydrocephalus without evidence of a third ventricular mass in 2019. The patient was lost to follow-up and re-admitted one year later for hydrocephalus secondary to a third ventricular mass. Imaging characteristics were consistent with a colloid cyst, which was the presumptive diagnosis. A transcallosal transchoroidal approach was utilized for cyst resection. The cyst wall was carefully incised, releasing flakey, partially solid contents which were grossly inconsistent with a colloid cyst. Due to the concern

Fatal colloid cyst of the foramen of Monro: A forensic case report.

We describes of a 58-year-old Indian man who died within 2 hours of becoming unconscious, with no prior symptoms. Brain non-contrast computed tomography (NCCT) imaging of the head revealed a round hyperdense mass measuring about 2 cm in diameter present in the foramen of Monro of the third ventricle of the brain, with marked dilatation of the lateral and third ventricles and brain oedema. Post-mortem examination, revealed a greenish-grey shining firm to hard mass in the foramen of Monro of the third ventricle, with marked dilatation of the lateral and third ventricles and brain oedema with bra

Delayed hydrocephalus after excision of a colloid cyst: a case report.

BACKGROUND: In this case report we describe an unusual case of a patient who underwent resection of a colloid cyst and then presented 6 weeks postoperatively with obstructive hydrocephalus. There appear to be no prior reports of such a delayed complication after colloid cyst resection. CASE PRESENTATION: A 50-year-old Caucasian woman underwent resection of a colloid cyst with an uncomplicated perioperative course. Postoperative imaging demonstrated complete resection of the cyst. She was discharged home on postoperative day 4 but presented 6 weeks later with symptoms of obstructive hydrocepha

A Rare, yet Classic Case of Colloid Cyst of Third Ventricle.

Colloid cyst of third ventricle is a rare, benign, congenital lesion that usually presents with headache, and associated with altered cognition, nausea, vomiting, gait ataxia, and blurred vision. A large cyst/growing cyst can cause obstructive hydrocephalus leading to acute rapid neurological deterioration and sudden death. Here we report a classic clinical presentation and histopathological features of colloid cyst of third ventricle with specific emphasis on the importance of rapid diagnosis and management to avoid potentially fatal complications of this otherwise benign lesion.
