A Case of Giant Colonic Muco-submucosal Elongated Polyps Associated with Intussusception.

Colonic muco-submucosal elongated polyp (CMSEP), a newly categorized non-neoplastic colorectal polyp, is a pedunculated and elongated polyp composed of normal mucosal and submucosal layers without any proper muscle layer. We herein report a giant variant of CMSEP associated with intussusception in the rectosigmoid colon, with a review of the literature. A 48-year-old woman underwent a laparoscopic low anterior resection due to multiple large submucosal polypoid masses associated with intussusception. Grossly, the colonic masses were multiple pedunculated polyps with a long stalk and branches r

Diminutive colonic polyps: histopathology, spatial distribution, concomitant significant lesions, and treatment complications.

OBJECTIVES: Our objectives in this study were to determine diminutive colonic polyp histology, distribution, frequency of significant synchronous neoplastic lesions, and treatment complications. METHODS: We evaluated consecutive colonoscopic examinations in which one or more diminutive polyps were detected over a 36-month period; these examinations had been entered into an endoscopy database at the time of colonoscopy. RESULTS: A total of 1964 diminutive polyps were found and removed in 753 colonoscopies; 1525 were removed by hot biopsy, 436 were removed by cold biopsy, and three were remove

Colonic polyps and coloduodenal fistula: unusual complications in patient with cystic fibrosis.

Abdominal pain, vomiting, and obstipation often occur in children and young adults with cystic fibrosis (CF). The common causes include meconium ileus equivalent, intussusception, and adhesions from previous surgery. One of our patients with CF who had meconium peritonitis as a neonate presented with duodenal obstruction during childhood. This was caused by colonic polyps arising in the hepatic flexure and eroding through the colonic and duodenal walls into the duodenum. She was treated with total parenteral nutrition, right colectomy, gastric diversion, and a controlled duodenal fistula that

Correlation of the morphology and size of colonic polyps with their histology.

BACKGROUND: Colonic adenomatous polyps are premalignant lesions; early recognition and use of a polypectomy for these polyps can reduce the occurrence of colorectal cancer. The purposes of this study were to evaluate the complications of polypectomy and the relationship between the morphology and size of colonic polyps and their histology. METHODS: Data on colonic polyps from 324 patients who received a polypectomy between April 1998 and December 2001 were collected. These included 207 men and 117 women, ranging in age between 17 and 86 years old, and who had had a colonoscopy or sigmoidoscop

Two cases of colonic adenomatous polyps accompanied by a migrated surgical suture.

A 56-year-old man and a 70-year-old woman, with histories of left colectomy and appendectomy respectively, were admitted to our hospital. In both cases, colonoscopy showed a pedunculated colonic polyp in the ascending colon, and a silk suture became visible in the stalk during polypectomy. The histological diagnosis was adenoma. These two cases constitute the first report of colonic adenomatous polyps accompanied by suture migration.

Polymorphism of GSTM1 gene in patients with colorectal cancer and colonic polyps.

The frequency of the GSTM1 gene in patients with nonpolyposis colorectal cancer (CRC) (n = 70) and in subjects with colonic polyps (n = 27) was evaluated and compared with healthy individuals (n = 145). Patients with CRC were divided into the three groups: patients coming from the families with hereditary nonpolyposis colorectal cancer (HNPCC) (n = 17); patients with a high risk of HNPCC who were referred to as suspected of HNPCC (n = 25); patients with sporadic colorectal cancer without clinical features of hereditary tumours (n = 28). Patients with adenomatous polyps and carcinomas have increased colonic mucosal prostaglandin E2.

Colorectal carcinoma in humans and animal models is associated with increased synthesis of prostaglandin E2 (PGE2). PGE2 synthesis was measured in normal and neoplastic human colorectal mucosa to investigate its role in the adenoma-carcinoma sequence. Paired mucosal biopsy specimens for PGE2 synthesis and histological examination were obtained during 39 diagnostic colonoscopies. Twelve control patients in whom colonoscopies and histology were normal synthesised similar amounts of PGE2 at all sites. Their results were (mean (SD) pg PGE2/mg tissue) caecum 102.8 (15.9) (n = 6), ascending colon 11

Polyps in a low-risk colonic cancer population in Colombia, South America.

Colonic polyps were systematically searched for in 508 specimens collected from unselected autopsies in individuals more than 10 years of age from Medellín, Colombia, a low-incidence geographic region for colorectal cancer. Adenomatous polyps have a low prevalence rate in both sexes, comparable to that found in Cali, Colombia and other populations with low risk for cancer. They were found more frequently in the right side of the colon and are rare in the sigmoid colon. They begin to appear in the third decade of life in both sexes. Prevalence rates for single and multiple polyps increase with

Huge bilharzial polyp mimicking colon cancer.

Bilharziasis (Schistosomiasis) is the third devastating tropical disease globally and is endemic in many countries including Egypt. The pathology of chronic colonic schistosomiasis results from egg-induced immune response, granuloma formation, and associated fibrotic changes that may manifest as bloody diarrhea, cramping, and, eventually, inflammatory colonic polyposis. Huge polyps complicating schistosomiasis are not frequently reported in the literature. Also, huge polyps as a sole manifestation of intestinal bilharziasis are rather rarely reported. Here, we report an Egyptian male patient w

Cancer risk in endoscopically unresectable colon polyps.

BACKGROUND: The purpose of the current study was to define the rate of underlying malignancy in endoscopically unresectable polyps. METHODS: An institutional review board-approved review identified all patients undergoing colectomy for radiologically identified or endoscopically unresectable polyps between 1997 and 2006. Patients were included if the endoscopic impression and biopsy findings suggested an adenomatous polyp without invasive cancer. Patient information was abstracted. RESULTS: Eighty procedures in 79 patients were identified. Median patient age was 66 (range 38 to 85) years, an

Positional change in colon polyps at CT colonography.

PURPOSE: To determine the frequency with which polyps change positions with respect to the bowel surface and the cause of this movement. MATERIALS AND METHODS: From December 2001 to March 2003, 113 patients underwent computed tomographic (CT) colonography prior to colonoscopy. For all confirmed polyps that were 5 mm and larger, images obtained with CT colonography were retrospectively analyzed by one author to determine if the polyp was present on both data sets or on only one data set. Retrospective evaluation of these polyps for ventral or dorsal location within the colonic lumen was perfor

Burkitt's lymphoma with intussusception mimicking a colonic polyp.

A 2-year-7-month old boy, presented with painless bloody stool was initially found to have an ulcerative, wide-based polyp in the ascending colon near the ileocecal region by colonoscopy. He received operation due to subsequent intussusception. Pathologic examination revealed an unusual case of polypoid Burkitt's lymphoma. The patient lives well 20 months later after receiving a standard chemotherapy. This case reminds us that colonic polyp and intussusception which is caused by Burkitt's lymphoma should be included in the differential diagnosis for a "wide-based polypoid" mass in the ascendin

Tobacco smoking as a risk factor for colon polyps.

BACKGROUND: Data from a cancer screening project among pattern makers were used to evaluate the association between tobacco smoking and prevalence of colon polyps. METHODS: From 1981-1983, 549 White men were examined by flexible sigmoidoscopy and completed self-administered questionnaires including smoking histories. RESULTS: One or more colon polyps were detected in 76 men. Standardized prevalence rates (SPR) for polyps increased by smoking category (never smoked = 0.094; ex-smokers = 0.118, current smokers = 0.214) and by cigarettes per day, years of smoking, and pack-years among both curr
