[Temporary muco-cutaneous transversal colostomy. Technical contribution].

The cases of 49 patients on whom a primary temporary muco-cutaneous transversal colostomy were practiced for different pathologies, are presented and the results obtained analysed. From our point of view, certain technical aspects explain the excellent results obtained. Within these aspects we call to attention the place where the colostomy was practiced, divulsioning the rectum muscle, the total absence of colo-parietal fixation and the early removal of the glass rod-all of which as we see it, simplifies enormously the healing process of this type of ostomy, thus permitting the systematic use

Side-to-end anastomosis in a colostomy for acute malignant large-bowel obstruction: side-to-end anastomosis with a colostomy (STEC procedure).

This report describes the use of side-to-end anastomosis in a colostomy for an acute malignant large-bowel obstruction. A 59-year-old man presented with a colonic obstruction due to advanced descending colon cancer. The preoperative imaging studies revealed a complete obstruction of the descending colon at the site of the splenic flexure, a remarkably dilated transverse colon, and no other metastatic lesions. Side-to-end anastomosis was performed with the colostomy because of the high comorbidity associated with such cases. When the patient's general condition improved, a stoma closure was per

Neonatal single-site divided colostomy in anorectal malformation.

PURPOSE: To evaluate outcomes of a single-site divided colostomy in neonates with anorectal malformations (ARM). METHODS: A retrospective review was conducted of neonates with ARM undergoing colostomy creation between 2012 and 2024 at a tertiary referral center. The technique used a divided colostomy with the proximal limb raised ~ 1.5 cm above skin level and a narrowed distal mucous fistula within the same opening, allowing coverage with a single stoma bag. The distal bowel was irrigated at surgery. Complications were classified using the Clavien-Madadi (CM) system. RESULTS: Sixty-one patie

Colostomy irrigation: implementing structured protocol-led follow-up.

Colostomy irrigation is a procedure that allows patients to achieve a certain degree of bowel control, and a period free of stoma effluent. It has the potential to improve quality of life, body image and confidence, and reduce patient anxiety. It may also help reduce odour and flatus, prevent/address peristomal skin irritation and alleviate constipation. Because it can reduce or eliminate the need for a colostomy bag, it may also cut expenditure on stoma appliances. However, colostomy irrigation is not offered to patients as standard. A protocol was drawn up to ensure colostomy irrigation was

Management of sigmoid volvulus using percutaneous endoscopic colostomy.

INTRODUCTION: The aim of this systematic review was to appraise the current literature on the use of percutaneous endoscopic colostomy (PEC) as an alternative to major surgery and endoscopic decompression alone for treating sigmoid volvulus in frail, comorbid patients. METHODS: A systematic literature search of literature published between April 2000 and January 2017 was carried out using the MEDLINE®, Embase™ and CINAHL® (Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature) databases. The search terms were "percutaneous endoscopic colostomy", "PEC", "sigmoidopexy", "sigmoidostomy" and "

Blowhole Colostomy for Clostridium difficile-Associated Toxic Megacolon.

We present the case of a 58-year-old man who underwent urgent blowhole colostomy for toxic megacolon (TM) secondary to Clostridium difficile infection (CDI). This infection occurred under antibiotic coverage with amoxicillin-clavulanic acid, four days after laparoscopic sigmoidectomy in our hospital. Although prospective clinical research regarding the surgical management of TM is lacking, decompressive procedures like blowhole colostomy are reported to carry a high risk of postoperative morbidity and mortality and are widely regarded as obsolete. Subtotal or total colectomy with end ileostomy

[Single port laparoscopic colostomy using the glove technique].

The single port surgery with glove technique is a novel process, suitable to the present day economic and technological moment. Colostomies are surgical interventions suitable to its application. We describe the surgical method and outcome of patients who underwent colostomy by single port glove technique within the years 2011 and 2012, in two hospitals in Asturias, Spain. We carried out six sigmoid colostomies. Four patients had tumoral pathology, another a perineal necrotizing fasciitis, and the sixth, a patient with Crohn's disease and complex perianal fistulas. The average age of the patie

Anal transposition without colostomy: functional results and complications.

Rectovestibular fistula (RVF) is the most common form of anorectal anomaly in female infants. In the surgical repair of these malformations, most pediatric surgeons use cutback, fistula transposition with or without colostomy, and lately, posterior anorectoplasty with colostomy. This is a retrospective evaluation of the functional results and complications in 47 patients who underwent fistula transposition without colostomy for the treatment of a RVF. We prefer to perform the operation when the rectovaginal septum is amenable to dissection (width >2 mm). All patients had voluntary bowel moveme

Pneumatic intussusception reduction via a colostomy: case report.

Intussusception is uncommon in infants with a colostomy. The authors present the first documented case of intussusception in an infant with a colostomy in which pneumatic reduction was achieved via the stomal opening. The inflated balloon of a Foley catheter was plugged against the stoma at skin level and a tight seal was obtained. Successful reduction was achieved without any adverse effects to the patient.

Complications of colostomy performed on gynecologic cancer patients.

From 1/1/80 to 5/31/90 111 patients underwent a colostomy on a gynecologic oncology service. Six patients developed 7 (6.3%) early colostomy-related complications, including sepsis (1), stomal retraction (1), ostomy wound infection (3), and partial stomal obstruction (2). The sepsis was felt to be related to spillage of stool upon maturing the colostomy, and this patient expired on Postoperative Day 63. There were no other mortalities attributed to the colostomies. Fourteen patients developed 17 (15.3%) delayed colostomy-related complications, including parastomal hernia (5), stomal retraction

[Change to continent colostomy with secondary sphincter transplant].

Intesive histological and biomechanical examinations have shown that the smooth muscles of the human gastrointestinal tract can be freely transplanted to take over the functions of a sphincter. In this study it has been shown how conventional colostomy can be converted into a continent one with the aid of a sphincter plasty. The operational technique, especially encircling the rectum, provides protection at the same time against prolapse of the anus praeternaturalis.

[Treatment of colostomy evagination in a child with Hirschsprung's disease].

In children with Hirschsprung's disease, primary radical surgery is often impossible due to significant intestinal enlargement above the aganglionic segment. Thus, colostomy is necessary at the first stage for normalization of colon diameter. Postoperative colostomy evagination occurs in 6.1% of cases, and correction is extremely difficult. In such cases, most authors recommend colostomy reconstruction that also does not guarantee success in postoperative period. We present surgical treatment of colostomy evagination in a child with subtotal form of Hirschsprung's disease.

The modified Altemeier procedure for a loop colostomy prolapse.

Loop colostomy prolapse is associated with an impaired quality of life. Surgical treatment may sometimes be required for cases that cannot be closed by colon colostomy because of high-risk morbidities or advanced disease. We applied the Altimeter operation for patients with transverse loop colostomy. The Altemeier operation is therefore indicated for rectal prolapse. This technique involves a simple operation, which includes a circumferential incision through the full thickness of the outer and inner cylinder of the prolapsed limb, without incising the abdominal wall, and anastomosis with sutu
