Cardiac interventions in Wales: A comparison of benefits between NHS Wales specialties.

OBJECTIVES: The study aimed to assess if specialised healthcare service interventions in Wales benefit the population equitably in work commissioned by the Welsh Health Specialised Services Committee (WHSSC). APPROACH: The study utilised anonymised individual-level, population-scale, routinely collected electronic health record (EHR) data held in the Secure Anonymised Information Linkage (SAIL) Databank to identify patients resident in Wales receiving specialist cardiac interventions. Measurement was undertaken of associated patient outcomes 2-years before and after the intervention (minus a

Cardiovascular event burden in women with breast cancer treated with CDK4/6 inhibitors: a retrospective matched cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Cyclin-dependent kinase (CDK) 4/6 inhibitors improve outcomes in hormone receptor-positive, HER2-negative breast cancer, but real-world data on cardiovascular (CV) toxicity are limited. METHODS: In this single-centre retrospective matched cohort study, women with breast cancer treated with a CDK4/6 inhibitor at University Hospitals Leuven between 2016 and 2022 constituted the index cohort. Age- and BMI-matched women without active cancer, selected from the population-based FLEMENGHO study, constituted the reference cohort. CV events were identified from medical records, and follow

Choosing Wisely Canada-Top Five List in Hepatology: Official Position Statement of the Canadian Association for the Study of the Liver (CASL) and Choosing Wisely Canada (CWC).

INTRODUCTION AND AIM: The prevalence and incidence of chronic liver disease is increasing resulting, in substantial direct and indirect medical costs. Overuse of investigations, treatments and procedures contribute to rising health care costs and can expose patients to unnecessary harm and delay in receiving care. The Choosing Wisely Canada (CWC) campaign has encouraged professional societies to develop statements that are directly actionable by their members in an effort to promote higher-value health care that will lead to downstream effect on how other practitioners make decisions. Predicting the Transition From Depression to Suicidal Ideation Using Facebook Data Among Indian-Bangladeshi Individuals: Protocol for a Cohort Study.

BACKGROUND: Suicide stands as a global public health concern with a pronounced impact, especially in low- and middle-income countries, where it remains largely unnoticed as a significant health concern, leading to delays in diagnosis and intervention. South Asia, in particular, has seen limited development in this area of research, and applying existing models from other regions is challenging due to cost constraints and the region's distinct linguistics and behavior. Social media analysis, notably on platforms such as Facebook (Meta Platforms Inc), offers the potential for detecting major dep

Gender inequities in ENT: Insights from women speakers at American Head and Neck Society meetings.

BACKGROUND: Gender inequity exists across national speakers at American Head and Neck Society (AHNS) conferences. This qualitative study explores potential causes of this disparity by surveying women invited to speak at AHNS between 2007 and 2019 and examining advice, resources, and meaningful actions from "those who made it." METHODS: An internet search for contact information for the 131 female AHNS was performed. An electronic survey was distributed via email. Deidentified qualitative responses were coded by two independent researchers into themes. Themes characterize barriers that female

Management of Clubfoot Relapses With the Ponseti Method: Results of a Survey of the POSNA Members.

BACKGROUND: Despite the high rate of initial success using the Ponseti method to manage idiopathic clubfoot deformity, relapse continues to be a problem. We surveyed the Pediatric Orthopedic Society of North America (POSNA) members about their experience with relapsed deformity following the initial correction of clubfeet. METHODS: We created a survey to focus on the management of clubfeet after initial correction of deformity. The survey included questions on postcorrective bracing, clinical findings used to identify relapse, the observed frequency of relapsed deformity, and how relapses are

Creating The Canadian Emergency Department Research Network (CEDRN): a new era for emergency medicine research.

PURPOSE: Emergency physicians care for diverse patients with undifferentiated and evolving conditions and often make clinical decisions with limited scientific evidence. Administrative barriers to effective pan-Canadian data collection from Emergency Departments (EDs) limit our ability to generate evidence in a timely manner, particularly in times of crisis. Informed by our prior COVID-19 collaboration ( https://ccedrrn.ca ), we created the Canadian ED Research Network (CEDRN, https://cedrn.ca ) to address these barriers. Our objective is to describe the Canadian ED Research Network's approach

"[T]he laws need to change to reflect current society": Insights from stakeholders involved in development, review or implementation of policies about adolescent consent for HIV testing, care and research in Kenya.

INTRODUCTION: Engaging adolescents in HIV care and research promotes the development of interventions tailored to their unique needs. Guidelines generally require parental permission for adolescents to receive HIV care/testing or participate in research, with exceptions. Nevertheless, parental permission requirements can restrict adolescent involvement in care and research. To better appreciate prospects for policy reform, we sought to understand the perspectives of stakeholders involved in the development, review and implementation of policies related to adolescents living with HIV. Development of the scoliosis research society spinal deformity surgery safety checklist.

PURPOSE: Spine deformity surgery is a complex multi-step procedure that has a relatively high complication rate. The use of surgical safety checklists has been shown to reduce perioperative adverse events, but existing lists are varied and non-specific for spinal deformity surgery. Thus, the purpose of this study was to develop a comprehensive surgical checklist for complex spinal corrective surgery. METHODS: An electronic survey consisting of 187 surgical checklist items that had been developed and used by a group of SRS members over a 5-year period was distributed to the Scoliosis Research

DESCRIPTION: Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is a commonly diagnosed gastrointestinal disorder that can have a substantial impact on quality of life. Most patients with IBS associate their gastrointestinal symptoms with eating food. Mounting evidence supports dietary modifications, such as the low-fermentable oligo-, di-, and monosaccharides and polyols (FODMAP) diet, as a primary treatment for IBS symptoms. The aim of this American Gastroenterological Association (AGA) Clinical Practice Update (CPU) is to provide best practice advice statements, primarily to clinical gastroenterologists, cover
