BACKGROUND: Breaking bad news (BBN) is a cognitively and emotionally demanding communication task for paediatric nurses, yet empirical evidence on its determinants remains scarce. This study aimed to assess the current status of BBN competence and identify demographic, professional, and training-related factors associated with this competence among paediatric nurses.
METHODS: A cross-sectional survey was conducted among 382 paediatric nurses using a Breaking Bad News Ability Scale. The scale demonstrated good psychometric properties (Cronbach's α = 0.91; test-retest reliability = 0.85; S-CVI/

INTRODUCTION: Effective communication during care transitions is essential for patient safety and quality outcomes. Telehealth-based transitional care programs decrease 30-day readmissions and improve patient satisfaction, yet staff frequently report the need for structured communication training. Artificial intelligence (AI)-supported simulation may offer a scalable training method for health care settings with limited simulation resources. This study evaluates whether AI-powered simulation training improves communication performance during real telehealth patient encounters.

CONTEXT: Parent-adolescent communication is associated with increased adolescent contraceptive use. However, studies of this association are limited by their lack of examination of the communication process, reliance on cross-sectional designs and infrequent comparison of parent and adolescent perspectives. Examining communication in black families is particularly important, given the high pregnancy rate among black adolescents.
METHODS: Between December 2007 and March 2008, a total of 21 focus groups were conducted with 53 black families (68 parents and 57 adolescents) in Pennsylvania. Separ

BACKGROUND: Generalization of speech-language pathology treatment is an important goal in clinical practice and research. Functional communication rating scales are often used to investigate potential treatment effects in daily life. Connected speech samples more closely reflect meaningful changes in communication as a result of treatment than test/re-test outcomes. Little attention has been directed to this relationship in aphasia due to neurodegenerative etiologies.
AIMS: We investigated whether correlations between ratings on the Georgetown University Center for Aphasia Research and Rehabi

INTRODUCTION: Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is a progressive motor neuron disease that leads to severe motor impairment, including loss of communication ability, and ultimately death. Communication brain computer interfaces (cBCIs) have the potential to restore communication without reliance on motor function, thereby improving quality of life, independence, and palliative care. However, standardized methods to evaluate cBCI efficacy necessary for clinical implementation are not yet established.
METHODS: We conducted a systematic literature review, semi structured interviews with key op

BACKGROUND: Pediatric orthopaedic surgeons often communicate with general pediatric providers to facilitate patient care, but little data exist on communication preferences. This study investigates pediatric provider preferences regarding when they would like to receive patient updates from pediatric orthopedists, which communication modalities they prefer, and what information they like to receive.
METHODS: We developed a 19-question e-mail survey to evaluate provider preferences on communication modality, timing, frequency, and what data they deem important as it relates to musculoskeletal

BACKGROUND: Managing patients with non-survivable head trauma who do not meet brain death criteria presents significant ethical and clinical challenges. Decisions frequently fall to surrogates with limited guidance, particularly when organ donation status is unknown. This study assessed physician perspectives on communication, interventions, and institutional factors.
METHODS: We conducted a national survey of academic neurosurgery, trauma surgery, and neurocritical care programs. Items examined communication barriers, interventions by donor status, institutional support, and a dissonance mea

INTRODUCTION: Communication barriers are one of the major contributors to inaccessible healthcare for autistic people. Literature highlights the need for autism-informed care in medical imaging settings, but evidence on communication interventions in imaging is limited. This review aimed to synthesise communication interventions used in imaging departments to support autistic service users' accessibility to imaging.
METHODS: The protocol was registered on PROSPERO and followed PRISMA guidelines. Literature searches were performed across six databases using keywords such as "medical imag∗", "c

BACKGROUND: Patient and Public Involvement and Engagement (PPIE) is integral to ensuring health research remains grounded in patient priorities and lived experience. This is especially critical for underrepresented groups, such as adults aged 90 and over considering elective total hip replacement (THR). This demographic experiences a small but meaningful risk of postoperative mortality, yet conventional numeric risk communication often fails to align with their values, communication preferences, and the existential context of very advanced age. Traditional PPIE methods, like focus groups, may
