Social media-driven multi-scale flood sensing: A systematic review of applications from global monitoring to community resilience.

With the acceleration of climate change and urbanization, floods have become increasingly frequent. Social media has emerged as a valuable data source for flood monitoring. However, current social media flood research is confined to a single spatial scale, overlooking the heterogeneity and methodological challenges of using such data across different spatial levels. This study proposed a multi-scalar analytical framework to systematically assess the current applications and future directions of social media in flood-related research. We adopted a semi-automated method supported by large langua

Remnant Cholesterol and Common Carotid Artery Intima-Media Thickness in Community Population with Normal Low-Density Lipoprotein Cholesterol.

INTRODUCTION: Remnant cholesterol is a risk factor for cardiovascular disease, especially when low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) levels are normal. However, there are few studies on the relationship between remnant cholesterol and subclinical atherosclerosis. Common carotid artery intima-media thickness (cIMT) is an imaging marker of subclinical atherosclerosis. This study aimed to investigate the relationship between remnant cholesterol and cIMT in a community population with normal LDL-C. METHODS: This study is a retrospective analysis; 1,101 community population with available ca

Understanding Patient Anxieties in the Social Media Era: Qualitative Analysis and Natural Language Processing of an Online Male Infertility Community.

BACKGROUND: Couples struggling with infertility are increasingly turning to the internet for infertility-related content and to connect with others. Most of the published data on infertility and the internet only address the experiences of women, with limited studies focusing exclusively on internet discussions on male factor infertility. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to understand the concerns and experiences of discussants on an online male infertility community and to provide insight into their perceptions of interactions with health care professionals. METHODS: Using the large-sca

Cystic adventitial disease of the popliteal artery: elongation into the media of the popliteal artery and communication with the knee joint capsule: report of a case.

Cystic disease of the popliteal artery is a rare disorder in which most cases involve the formation of an adventitial cyst that disturbs the popliteal artery blood flow. We present herein the case of a patient presenting with popliteal artery occlusion due to compression by a cyst which formed at the media of the popliteal artery. The onset occurred during a baseball game in which he played catcher. Preoperative magnetic resonance imaging demonstrated a communication of the cyst with the adjacent knee joint. This unusual case could provide important clues to help identify the pathogenesis of t

A Preventive Social Media Intervention for Perinatal Depression and Anxiety in Regional, Rural, and Remote Communities: Participatory Co-Design Study.

BACKGROUND: Perinatal depression and anxiety are significant public health concerns, affecting up to 1 in 5 women globally, with disproportionate burden carried by women in regional, rural, and remote communities where structural and social inequities amplify vulnerability. Access to perinatal mental health support in these settings is severely constrained by geographical isolation, workforce shortages, financial barriers, and a lack of culturally safe services. Prevention is recognized as critical to reducing this burden, with evidence suggesting that effective preventive approaches can reduc

Misinformation, Social Media, and Myths About Injectable ART: Communication Barriers to HIV Care Among Transgender Women in India.

Effective health communication is vital for engagement in HIV care, especially for transgender women (TGW), who often encounter misinformation. This issue is worsened by lower literacy levels and stigma. Despite efforts like providing free antiretroviral therapy (ART), misinformation persists, and little is known about the specific rumors and misconceptions that influence TGW's engagement with HIV services. This study aims to fill these gaps and identify key intervention points to enhance HIV communication and care outcomes for TGW living with HIV. We conducted 30 in-depth interviews from July

The Association Between Negative Online Behaviours and Problematic Social Media Use in Adolescents: Comparing Psychiatric Inpatients and Community Participants.

OBJECTIVES: The U.S. Surgeon General's Advisory recently highlighted (2023) the urgency to better understand the impacts of social media on youth mental health, emphasizing the need to distinguish normative from problematic social media use (PSMU). This study aims to investigate specific online behaviours in adolescents, examining their association with PSMU, depressive symptoms and past abuse. METHODS: 247 adolescents (ages 12-17) completed online questionnaires; 124 were part of the community group (CG) and 123 were psychiatric inpatients (Hospitalized Group, HG). Association of Carotid Intima-Media Thickness with Brain MRI Markers in the Atherosclerosis Risk in Communities Neurocognitive Study (ARIC-NCS).

OBJECTIVE: Elevated carotid intima-media thickness (cIMT) and carotid plaque are markers of arterial injury and may be linked to structural brain injury. We hypothesized cIMT or presence of carotid plaque at midlife are associated with presence of infarcts and cerebral microbleeds, greater white matter hyperintensity (WMH) volume, and smaller regional brain volumes in late-life. METHODS: We included 1,795 Atherosclerosis Risk in Communities (ARIC) Study participants (aged 57±6 years, 57% female, 23% Black) with carotid ultrasounds in 1990-1992 and brain MRI scans in 2011-2013. Carotid pulse pressure and intima media thickness are independently associated with cerebral hemodynamic pulsatility in community-living older adults.

Vascular aging is associated with markers of cerebrovascular impairment. Whether discrete characteristics of arterial structure and function have independent and/or additive effects on cerebral hemodynamics, however, is not completely understood. We examined the association of cerebral hemodynamics with common carotid artery intima-media thickness (IMT) and pulse pressure (PP) in 61 older adults with prevalent cardiometabolic risk but no history of cerebrovascular disease. We calculated pulsatility index (PI) and hypercapnic reactivity of the middle cerebral artery, as well as global blood flo

Treatment of heavily polluted river water by tidal-operated biofilters with organic/inorganic media: Evaluation of performance and bacterial community.

In this study, biofilters (BFs) packed with inorganic (ceramsite and lava rock) and organic (fibrous carrier and biological ball) materials were applied in a tide-flow mode at three flooded/drained (F/D) time ratios (16/8 h, 12/12 h and 8/16 h) to treat heavily polluted river water. The results showed that higher ammonium and phosphorus removals were achieved with BFs filled with ceramsite (95-97% and 76-77%) and lava rock (87-92% and 84-94%), while fibrous carrier-packed BFs obtained better total nitrogen removal (37-44%). Moreover, the F/D time ratio of 16/8 h was slightly preferable for pol

The role of readability in effective health communication: an experiment using a Japanese health information text on chronic suppurative otitis media.

OBJECTIVES: This study identifies the most significant readability factors and examines ways of improving and evaluating Japanese health information text in terms of ease of reading and understanding. METHODS: Six different Japanese texts were prepared based on an original short text written by a medical doctor for a hospital web site intended for laypersons regarding chronic suppurative otitis media. Four were revised for single readability factor (syntax, vocabulary, or text structure) and two were modified in all three factors. Using a web-based survey, 270 high school students read one of

Harnessing Social Media, Influencers, and Community Engagement to Confront HIV-Related Stigma in Peru: Longitudinal Descriptive Study of the DiME Campaign.

BACKGROUND: HIV remains a public health challenge worldwide, and HIV-related stigma constitutes a major barrier to prevention, testing, and treatment efforts. Mitigating HIV-related stigma is crucial to improving outcomes for people living with HIV and reaching global HIV targets. Social media platforms and influencers are increasingly used for public health communication and may provide an opportunity to shape social norms and reduce HIV-related stigma among adolescents and young adults. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to describe the experience of implementing a Spanish-language community-engag

Ophthalmic health communication in the video-based social media era: A narrative review of information quality, engagement dynamics, and professional education.

With the rapid ascent of video-based social media, platforms like TikTok and YouTube have become primary sources of ophthalmic health information, shaping both patient perceptions and professional development. This narrative review synthesizes evidence from 76 empirical studies to evaluate the quality and reliability of ophthalmic video content. We identify a persistent engagement paradox, where algorithm-driven metrics such as view counts and shares often favor simplified, emotionally resonant, or visually striking narratives over medically accurate and balanced counseling. Digital She-nanigans: Social media users' response toward online hostilities targeting a female science communicator with marginalized identities.

Online hostility poses a growing societal challenge, yet quantitative evidence on how social media users respond to different kinds of hostility targeting different identities is limited, even though insights into bystander perceptions are detrimental to combat the online hate endemic. This online experiment (N = 461) examines cognitive (perceived acceptability), affective (negative emotions), and behavioral (intervention intentions) responses to varyingly hostile comments (impolite vs uncivil vs intolerant) directed at a female science communicator with different ethnic (Black vs White) and L

Messaging strategies for communicating health-related information in social media-a content and effectiveness analysis of organ donation posts on Instagram in Germany.

BACKGROUND: Although organ transplantation is a very effective clinical solution to save the lives of patients suffering from organ failure, the supply of donated organs still cannot meet its growing demand. Educating the society about organ donation is a critical success factor in increasing donation rates, especially in countries that require potential donors to proactively register and opt-in (e.g., Germany). While social media has emerged as an effective tool for disseminating health information, recent evidence suggests that published organ donation content (both online and offline), aime
