Analysis of sedation and general anesthesia in patients with special needs in dentistry using the Korean healthcare big data.

BackgroundPeople with special needs tend to require diverse behavioral management in dentistry. They may feel anxious or uncomfortable or may not respond to any communication with the dentists. Patients with medical, physical, or psychological disorders may not cooperate and therefore require sedation (SED) or general anesthesia (GA) to receive dental treatment. Using the healthcare big data in Korea, this study aimed to analyze the trends of SED and GA in special needs patients undergoing dental treatment. It is believed that these data can be used as reference material for hospitals and for

National Dentist Day of India: When and Why?

Dentist Day is celebrated to honor the dental profession and to enhance public awareness of oral health. In the United States, this observance occurs on March 6. India informally adhered to this date and tradition until 2015. However, during the Central Council Meeting of the Indian Dental Association on January 17, 2016, in Jaipur, December 24 was officially designated as the National Dentist Day in India. This date commemorates the birth anniversary of Padma Bhushan Dr. Rafiuddin Ahmed, a pioneer of modern dentistry in India. Despite this official declaration made a decade ago, a substantial

Teaching Dental Students About Incarceration and Correctional Dentistry: Results from a National Survey.

People who are incarcerated or have a history of incarceration have high rates of dental disease, but access to dental treatment is often a challenge during and after incarceration. Dental students' exposure to this population is unknown: no data exist regarding the number of schools that provide didactic and clinical training in correctional dentistry. The aim of this study was to assess the extent of instruction in correctional dentistry and clinical opportunities at correctional facilities for dental students in the U.S. A survey was distributed to the academic deans at all 66 U.S. dental s

Water Fluoridation Risks or Benefits: Summary of the Symposium Presented During the Enamel 11 Meeting Held in Paris France.

Fluoride is widely used in dentistry to prevent dental caries. Fluoride can be naturally present in ground waters, and as a public health measure, many countries have added fluoride to drinking water. Experimental studies show that fluoride can affect the cells of the developing tooth organ to result in dental fluorosis, and cellular effects of fluoride raise concerns about potential neurodevelopmental and endocrine effects. Evidence of increasing levels of fluorosis in populations, have led regulatory organizations to revise their recommendations for optimal doses. To review the scientific ev

The light at the other end of the tunnel: heeding two decades of regeneration research to reclaim natural tooth preservation.

Despite advancements in biomimetic and regenerative dentistry, contemporary prosthetic restorations, though clinically successful, remain fundamentally imperfect replications of the natural tooth's inherent biological perfection. Crucially, while these advancements remain vital, the dental discipline has increasingly shifted from preventive focus to a reparative focus. Given that dental decay-the primary concern in a dental practice-is a highly predictable and preventable condition and that tooth loss is a largely avoidable outcome, we propose that the future of the discipline lies in transiti

Surgical Bone Implantation Technique for Rat Tibia Models of Diabetes and Osteoporosis.

The rat has long served as a valuable animal model in implant dentistry and orthopedics, particularly in studying the interactions between biomaterials and bone tissue. The rat's tibia is frequently chosen due to its easy surgical access through thin tissue layers (skin and muscle) and the flattened shape of its medial face, facilitating the surgical insertion of intraosseous devices. Additionally, this model enables the induction of specific diseases, mimicking various clinical conditions to assess biological responses to different implant conditions like geometry, surface texture, or biologi

To fulfill the Healthy People 2010 Objective 1.7, "Increase the proportion of . . . health professional training schools whose basic curriculum for health care providers includes the core competencies in health promotion and disease prevention," the Healthy People Curriculum Task Force has developed a curriculum framework for clinical prevention and population health for all the health professions. This framework has four components: 1) evidence base for practice; 2) clinical preventive services, including health promotion; 3) health systems and health policy; and 4) community aspects of pract

Assessment of periodontal status and treatment needs of a disabled population using the CPITN.

The Community Periodontal Index of Treatment Needs (CPITN) was used to assess the periodontal status of 213 handicapped persons attending seven institutions in Johannesburg. Fewer than 2% had healthy mouths, 8% had bleeding only, followed by calculus (46%), shallow pockets (40%) and deep pockets (4%). The mean number of sextants with bleeding or higher score was 5.9. Oral hygiene instruction was indicated for 98% and prophylaxis for 90% of the participants. The CPITN was easily used in the disabled population but may overestimate treatment need in view of the current understanding that periodo

Surgical treatment of oroantral fistulas: a clinical study of 23 cases.

Oroantral communication can be defined as a pathologic space created between the maxillary sinus and the oral cavity. This communication and subsequent formation of a chronic oroantral fistula is a common complication often encountered by oral and maxillofacial surgeons. Although various techniques have been proposed in published studies, long-term successful closure of oroantral fistulas is still one of the most difficult problems confronting the surgeon working in the oral and maxillofacial region. The decision of which treatment modality to use is influenced by many factors, such as the amo

Do NCCHC Dental Standards Have Any Teeth?

Federal civil rights law establishes legal parameters for correctional dental care, but it does not provide specific standards for implementation. Thus, courts have developed guidelines on a case-by-case basis, often rendering the National Commission on Correctional Health Care (NCCHC) standards on dental care the de facto benchmark for institutions. This systematic review of all court cases that apply NCCHC standards for dentistry in prisons examines how courts use NCCHC standards and provides insights into whether those standards have any "teeth," or power, in a legal sense. These findings c

The rationale for the introduction of implant dentistry into the dental curriculum.

This paper provides arguments for the introduction of implant dentistry into the undergraduate curriculum. The survival of teeth is very high when disease is diagnosed and treated properly and maintenance is taken care of. Nevertheless, tooth replacements by fixed and removable prostheses are highly prevalent. It is expected that dentists will face a dramatically increased need to care for elderly patients and partially edentulous patients. Hence, the demand for implant reconstructions will be substantial and more appropriately trained and competent health professionals will be needed. Increas

Dental fear and avoidance: causes, symptoms, and consequences.

A specialized community dental unit for dental fear treatment was used to investigate 160 adult patients. The patients, predominantly women 20 to 40 years old, had avoided regular dental care for an average of 16 years. Psychosocial and psychosomatic conditions were common. Dental fear generally had started in childhood (85%) and the dominating causative factor was previous traumatic dental experiences. For fear of early origin, the dentist's professional behavior was most important, whereas for fear acquired in adult years, pain was important. The most feared events in dentistry ranked by the
