Trauma Exposure and Prolonged Grief Disorder Among Persons Receiving Community Mental Health Services: Rates and Correlates.

BACKGROUND: Persons with serious mental illnesses (SMIs) are at increased risk for exposure to trauma and posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Prolonged Grief Disorder (PGD) may also impact this population but has been seldom studied. AIMS: The present study investigated the rate of both PTSD and PGD among clients receiving community mental health services, and the clinical correlates of co-occurring PTSD/PGD. METHODS: Trauma history, PTSD and PGD were assessed among 536 individuals receiving community mental health services (Study 1). A subsample of 127 individuals from Study 1 who met DSM

Should community health workers offer support healthcare services to survivors of sexual violence? a systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Sexual violence is widespread, yet relatively few survivors receive healthcare or complete treatment. In low and middle-income countries, community health workers (CHWs) have the potential to provide support services to large numbers of survivors. The aim of this review was to document the role of CHWs in sexual violence services. We aimed to: 1) describe existing models of CHWs services including characteristics of CHWs, services delivered and populations served; 2) explore acceptability of CHWs' services to survivors and feasibility of delivering such services; and 3) document th

Bed utilization in two differently organized community mental health services in Northern Norway: the VELO-project.

BACKGROUND: The literature on the dynamics between community- and hospital services concerning utilization of psychiatric beds is inconclusive. The Norwegian VELO-project provides an opportunity to study this in a natural experiment. Two service-systems are compared. The "central-bed system" have mainly outpatient- and day-hospital services locally, with psychiatric beds at a central mental hospital. The "local-bed system" have only one outpatient clinic, with beds at three local inpatient units. Also utilization of sheltered homes was studied. Hypotheses were predicted from Goldberg and Huxle

Effectiveness of a community paramedic-led health assessment and education initiative in a seniors' residence building: the Community Health Assessment Program through Emergency Medical Services (CHAP-EMS).

BACKGROUND: Seniors living in subsidized housing have lower income, poorer health, and increased risk for cardiometabolic diseases and falls. Seniors also account for more than one third of calls to Emergency Medical Services (EMS). This study examines the effectiveness of the Community Health Assessment Program through EMS (CHAP-EMS) in reducing blood pressure, diabetes risk, and EMS calls. METHODS: Paramedics on modified duty (e.g. injured) conducted weekly, one-on-one drop-in sessions in a common area of one subsidized senior's apartment building in Hamilton, Ontario. Paramedics assessed c

Female offenders referred for community-based mental health service as compared to other service-referred youth: correlates of conviction.

Data from a large federally supported national evaluation of system-of-care community mental health services were analysed to identify correlates of conviction. Female adolescents with a reported history of criminal conviction (n=88) were compared to three other service-referred youth groups: females without conviction histories (n=664), males with conviction histories (n=199), and males without conviction histories (n=1230) for possible differences in number and type of family, individual, and school-related life challenges. Multinomial regression analyses were first used to compare the quant

Sexual health and sexual trauma in women with severe mental illness: An exploratory survey of Western Australian community mental health services.

Australian women attending community mental health services were surveyed to determine the relationship between sexual trauma, sexual activity, and sexual health seeking behaviors. Self-reported history of "forced sex" was 58.4% (n = 122 out of 220). Latent class analysis revealed a three-class model: "sexually active and health seeking," "low sexual activity and health seeking" and "low sexual activity and not health seeking." An association with general practitioner engagement and sexual health seeking behaviors was found. Rates of self-reported sexual trauma reinforce the need for screening

Administrative Burdens as Distinct Barriers to Accessing Mental Health Services in Community Mental Health Centers and Federally Qualified Health Centers: A Mixed-Methods Assessment.

Increasingly, adolescents are struggling with poor mental health outcomes, making it essential to improve access to high-quality mental health services. Community Mental Health Centers (CMHCs) and Federally Qualified Health Centers (FQHCs) act as key "safety-net" health centers for low-income youth seeking mental health services, as the majority accept Medicaid. This study examines how administrative burdens, i.e., challenges citizens face when interacting with a government agency, may act as barriers to accessing mental health services, especially for adolescents and their caregivers. This ex

Views on mental health recovery in primary and community mental healthcare services in Thailand: A qualitative study.

INTRODUCTION: Strong community-based services and healthcare providers with a clear understanding and positive attitudes towards recovery, are central to delivering good quality mental health care in collaboration with service users. Although recovery has been explored in several Asian contexts, its interpretation remains diverse, and consensus on the definition and meaning of personal recovery in Thailand is limited. Further research is needed to explore how mental health service users, carers, and healthcare professionals understand and experience recovery and recovery support, in order to a

Peer support for discharge from inpatient to community mental health services: Study protocol clinical trial (SPIRIT Compliant).

INTRODUCTION: In the period shortly after discharge from inpatient to community mental health care, people are at increased risk of self-harm, suicide, and readmission to hospital. Discharge interventions including peer support have shown potential, and there is some evidence that community-based peer support reduces readmissions. However, systematic reviews of peer support in mental health services indicate poor trial quality and a lack of reporting of how peer support is distinctive from other mental health support. This study is designed to establish the clinical and cost effectiveness of a
