Harambee! 2.0: Community resources and resilience factors to leverage for improving HIV testing behaviors among African immigrant communities in Seattle, Washington.

Significant challenges promoting positive HIV testing behaviors among African immigrant communities in the U.S. persist, though existing community resources may be leveraged to improving these behaviors and increasing testing uptake. We conducted 30 key informant interviews and five focus group discussions (n = total 72 participants) among members of the Ethiopian, Somali, and Eritrean communities in Seattle, WA to identify these resources. Our findings highlight the following three main themes for responsive interventions: (1) capitalize on religious leaders and institutions as key facilitato

Rapid community identification, pain and distress associated with lymphoedema and adenolymphangitis due to lymphatic filariasis in resource-limited communities of North-eastern Nigeria.

Identification of communities with people that could benefit from adenolymphangitis (ADL) and lymphoedema morbidity management within Lymphatic Filariasis Elimination Programmes (NLFEP) in many African countries is a major challenge to programme managers. Another challenge is advocating for proportionate allocation of funds to alleviating the suffering that afflicted people bear. In this study we developed a rapid qualitative technique of identifying communities where morbidity management programme could be situated and documenting the pain and distress that afflicted persons endure. Estimates

Connecting Rural Veterans: Community-Based Peer Social Interventions to Advance Health and Resource Access.

PURPOSE: Rural veterans experience significant barriers to support, including social isolation and limited access to mental health services, resulting in elevated health risks compared to urban veterans. Inadequate social support is a major obstacle to help-seeking during crises. This study describes the feasibility and preliminary effectiveness of a peer-driven, community-based Veterans Socials (VS) to enhance support networks and connect non-VA-enrolled rural veterans to a supportive, information-rich community environment. METHODS: In partnership with a VA Medical Center, six peer speciali

Community-based palliative care service provision framework (PALLIUM framework) in a resource-limited setting.

BACKGROUND: Palliative care addresses the complex needs of individuals with life-limiting illnesses (LLIs), encompassing physical, psychological, social and spiritual dimensions of suffering. In India, access to such care remains extremely limited, with less than 4% of those in need receiving it. Existing services often focus narrowly on pain relief, neglecting the broader concept of 'total pain'. Moreover, community-based delivery models that address these holistic needs within resource-constrained environments are largely missing. CASE PRESENTATION: This case report describes the developmen

Characterizing service receipt among families of young autistic children from low-resourced communities.

When young autistic children (aged 3-5) receive appropriate services, they experience long-term developmental benefits, along with positive impacts on their families and society. However, families of autistic children from low-resourced communities often face compounded barriers to accessing needed services. It is important to characterize service receipt, including current services and unmet service needs, to identify which unmet service needs should be targeted for intervention among families from low-resourced communities. In this study, 52 parents of 3-5-year-olds with autism from low-reso

Distributed communication interference resource scheduling using the master-slave parallel scheduling genetic algorithm.

With the increasing intelligence and diversification of communication interference in recent years, communication interference resource scheduling has received more attention. However, the existing interference scenario models have been developed mostly for remote high-power interference with a fixed number of jamming devices without considering power constraints. In addition, there have been fewer scenario models for short-range distributed communication interference with a variable number of jamming devices and power constraints. To address these shortcomings, this study designs a distribute

Birth defects services in low resource settings: implications from a community-based study in India.

Birth defects, or congenital anomalies, are important causes of child mortality, morbidity and disability. Guidelines for public health activities to address birth defects is currently unavailable for low- and low-middle- income countries leading to a critical policy and service gap. We used the results of a study conducted in eight villages under a Primary Health Centre in Pune district of India to determine the needed public health interventions to address these disorders. The study identified 90 children with congenital anomalies per 10,000 children under five years [95% CI 62.2-126.8]. Con

Exploring and enhancing the accessibility of children's oral health resources (called HABIT) for high risk communities.

BACKGROUND: Within the city of Bradford in West Yorkshire, South Asian and Eastern European communities have an increased risk of childhood tooth decay, especially among families with Limited English Proficiency. Tooth decay is preventable, with national guidelines advocating home-based behaviours (toothbrushing with fluoride toothpaste and reducing sugar intake). In England, Health Visitors have opportunities to undertake oral health conversations during universal visits for children aged 0-24 months. The HABIT (Health visitors delivering Advice in Britain on Infant Toothbrushing) interventio

omicSynth: An open multi-omic community resource for identifying druggable targets across neurodegenerative diseases.

Treatments for neurodegenerative disorders remain rare, but recent FDA approvals, such as lecanemab and aducanumab for Alzheimer disease (MIM: 607822), highlight the importance of the underlying biological mechanisms in driving discovery and creating disease modifying therapies. The global population is aging, driving an urgent need for therapeutics that stop disease progression and eliminate symptoms. In this study, we create an open framework and resource for evidence-based identification of therapeutic targets for neurodegenerative disease. We use summary-data-based Mendelian randomization

Harm reduction vending machines: An opportunity to bridge the resource access gap in non-urban communities.

INTRODUCTION: Overdose mortality in the U.S. remains high. Widespread availability of naloxone and other risk reduction materials can decrease fatal overdose risk and other drug use related harms, yet barriers to supply access remain. Harm reduction vending machines (HRVMs) may offer a solution, yet the intervention has not been scaled up within the US. In this study, we interview people who use drugs (PWUD) representing urban, suburban, and rural communities in the state of Maryland to examine naloxone access and attitudes towards HRVMs. METHODS: In-depth interviews (N = 22) were conducted w

Co-production of a National Botswana Tobacco Control Resource Center through Community Engagement Studio.

Tobacco use causes over 8 million deaths annually, with low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) bearing most of the burden. In Botswana, tobacco use prevalence rose from 17.6% in 2017 to 22.2% in 2024. Despite this, tobacco control infrastructure remains limited. Tobacco Control Resource Centers (TCRCs) have been established to consolidate provider training, research, and dissemination of tobacco control resources. The World Health Organization (WHO) Centre for Tobacco Control in Africa (CTCA), a regional TCRC, has a cross-country mandate that could be further strengthened through complementa

OMICON: a community resource for studying gene coexpression networks in normal and neoplastic human brain samples.

Genome-wide coexpression analysis of intact tissue samples is a powerful approach for identifying reproducible signatures of cell types and states, since it can survey vast numbers of individuals, cells, and transcripts. However, it can be difficult to optimize gene coexpression network construction and compare results from independent analyses. To address these challenges, we developed OMICON (theomicon.ucsf.edu) for research on human brain gene coexpression networks. OMICON contains gene expression data from >17K normal and neoplastic human brain samples with standardized metadata. Systemati

Navigating Community-Based Psychiatry Care of Pediatric Patients in Low-Resource Settings: A Case Report.

This case report examines the experience of a nine-year-old male with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) who was admitted to his rural community emergency department (ED) for the treatment of aggressive behaviors, agitation, and violence. Despite a high prevalence of such behaviors within the autistic pediatric population, multiple inpatient facilities that offer pediatric psychiatric services refused to transfer his care. Many other commonly used resources and treatment modalities were also not available, resulting in a nine-day ED boarding experience with minimal symptomatic improvement. Pharmac
