Community Structure of a Mental Health Internet Support Group: Modularity in User Thread Participation.

BACKGROUND: Little is known about the community structure of mental health Internet support groups, quantitatively. A greater understanding of the factors, which lead to user interaction, is needed to explain the design information of these services and future research concerning their utility. OBJECTIVE: A study was conducted to determine the characteristics of users associated with the subgroup community structure of an Internet support group for mental health issues. METHODS: A social network analysis of the Internet support group BlueBoard (blueboard.anu.edu.au) was performed to determin

Service and infrastructure needs to support recovery programmes for Indigenous community mental health consumers.

Mental health is a major concern in Indigenous communities, as Indigenous people experience poorer health outcomes generally, and poorer social and emotional well-being throughout their lives, compared to non-Indigenous populations. Interviews were conducted with 20 mental health workers from a housing assistance programme for Indigenous clients with mental illness. Service and infrastructure needs identified to support clients were classified under the following overarching theme 'supports along the road to recovery'. Subthemes were: (i) It is OK to seek help; (ii) linking in to the local com

Integrating criminal justice, community healthcare, and support services for adults with severe mental disorders.

Persons with severe mental disorders are overrepresented in our nation's jails and prisons. Factors including cooccurring substance use disorders, homelessness, and lack of access to community services have contributed to this problem, as have gaps between criminal justice, healthcare, and community support systems. In order to address these issues, Project Link was developed by the University of Rochester Department of Psychiatry in collaboration with five local community agencies. Project Link is designed to prevent involvement of individuals with severe mental illness from entering the crim

Well-being support in the Finnish university community: staff reflections on emerging existential dimensions.

PURPOSE: Contemporary university communities have been reshaped by changing societal expectations, the COVID-19 pandemic, and structural reforms, increasing the pace, complexity, and demands of academic work for both staff and students. These pressures disrupt existential well-being (EWB), understood as a multidimensional construct encompassing meaning, purpose, coherence, and relatedness. This study examines how university staff conceptualize well-being support in academic communities and how EWB appears in their accounts. METHOD: The study was conducted in Finnish universities representing

Personalised management of community-acquired pneumonia and the role of Clinical Decision Support Software.

Community-acquired pneumonia (CAP) is one of the most common causes of hospital admission and is associated with significant morbidity and mortality. National and international guidelines are available to guide the management of CAP, including antibiotic prescribing. However, these guidelines are often not adhered to and there is significant overprescribing of broad-spectrum antibiotics, contributing to the growing pandemic of antimicrobial resistance. Clinical Decision Support Software (CDSS) are electronic tools that use individual patient data to generate patient specific assessments or rec

Intergenerational support and depressive symptoms: Moderating effects of community services and smart health devices.

OBJECTIVE: Prior research suggests that intergenerational support can buffer depressive symptoms among older adults, yet the roles of community services and digital health technologies remain under-explored. We examined whether community service support and use of smart-health devices moderate the association between intergenerational support and depressive symptoms among Chinese older adults. METHODS: We analyzed two waves (2018, 2020) of the Chinese Longitudinal Healthy Longevity Survey (CLHLS), including 4054 older adults. A multilevel mixed-effects model was employed to account for both c

A decision support tool for the location, districting and dimensioning of Community Health Houses.

Community Health Houses (CHHs) are new entities in the Italian National Health Service that have been envisaged to provide proximity care to an increasingly aging population, and bear some similarities to other facilities in countries that have historically focused on public healthcare. This work proposes an integrated decision support system (DSS) for their planning, envisioned during the aftermath of the COVID-19 pandemic, which highlighted the frailty of the existing system. The DSS is based on an integer linear programming (ILP) model that simultaneously makes location, districting and dim

Community-based stress, social support, and depressive symptoms among black adults: A mediation analysis.

The global rise of multidrug-resistant Acinetobacter baumannii underscores the urgent need for innovative therapeutics. Although peptides have emerged as promising antimicrobial molecules, their clinical application is limited by rapid degradation. Here, we introduce d-GK17, a d-enantiomeric derivative of the human cathelicidin LL-37 engineered to resist proteolysis. This study provides the first comprehensive preclinical validation of an inverso LL-37-derived peptide, demonstrating that d-GK17 displays potent broad-spectrum antimicrobial, antibiofilm, and immunomodulatory effects while mainta

Model-driven decision support: A community-based meta-implementation strategy to predict population impact.

PURPOSE: Standard tools for public health decision making such as data dashboards, trial repositories, and intervention briefs may be necessary but insufficient for guiding community leaders in optimizing local public health strategy. Predictive modeling decision support tools may be the missing link that allows community level decision makers to confidently direct funding and other resources to interventions and implementation strategies that will improve upon the status quo. METHODS: We describe a community-based model-driven decision support (MDDS) approach that requires community engageme

Sleep Medication in Older Adults: Identifying the Need for Support by a Community Pharmacist.

Many older adults take benzodiazepines and sedative-hypnotics for the treatment of sleep disorders. With a view to considering the possible discontinuation of hypnotics, the objectives of the present study were to describe bedtime habits and sleep patterns in older adults and to identify the sleep medications taken. An expert group developed a structured interview guide for assessing the patients' bedtime habits, sleep patterns, and medications. During an internship in a community pharmacy, 103 sixth-year pharmacy students conducted around 10 interviews each with older adults (aged 65 or over)

Use of Informal Support as a Predictor of Home- and Community-Based Services Utilization.

OBJECTIVES: Home- and community-based services (HCBS) help older adults remain living safely in their homes by delaying or preventing the need for institutionalization. This analysis is guided by the Andersen Behavioral Model of Health Services Use to examine the association between informal support and use of HCBS. METHOD: Health and Retirement Study data from 2011 and 2012 are used in the bivariate analyses and multivariate logistic regression models to examine differences in HCBS utilization among extremely vulnerable older adults who have informal caregivers and those who do not. Marginalization and Community Perception of HIV Care, Treatment, and Support on Mfangano Island, Kenya.

BACKGROUND: In rural sub-Saharan Africa (SSA), the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)/AIDS pandemic has exerted effects on nearly every aspect of life. Yet despite the pandemic's near ubiquitous impacts, major barriers to HIV care, treatment, and support persist. Compounding the barriers to care is the incredible complexity and diversity of experience across different sociocultural contexts. OBJECTIVES: This exploratory community-based participatory study aimed to generate an explanatory model about how geographic and socioeconomic marginalization shape community perception of HIV care, treat

The relationship of social support to treatment entry and engagement: the Community Assessment Inventory.

This study was conducted to determine the psychometric properties of a measure of social support, the Community Assessment Inventory (CAI), and to examine the role of social support in recovery. The CAI and the Addiction Severity Index (ASI) were administered to 196 opioid-dependent adults in (n = 135) or out of (n = 61) methadone treatment in Baltimore, Maryland, between 2004 and 2006. Baseline CAI scale scores indicated a generally high level of internal consistency (alpha scores). Pearson correlations showed that the scales were stable and had good discriminant validity with the ASI composi
