Respiratory tract infections, caused by various bacteria and viruses, pose a significant global health burden. In Lebanon, post-COVID-19 epidemiological data on respiratory infections remain scarce. To address this gap, this multicenter study investigates the epidemiology of community-acquired acute respiratory infections among children and adults in Tripoli, North Lebanon. From May 2023 to February 2024, nasopharyngeal samples were collected from outpatients with acute respiratory infections visiting hospitals and pediatric clinics in Tripoli. Samples were analyzed using BioFire® Respiratory

This study aimed to evaluate the diagnostic value of chemiluminescence immunoassay (CLIA), passive particle agglutination (PPA), and indirect immunofluorescence assay (IFA) in detecting Mycoplasma pneumoniae infection in children. Serum samples from 165 children with acute community-acquired respiratory tract infections were examined using CLIA, PPA, and IFA, and consistency coefficient, specificity, and sensitivity were analyzed. Compared with the PPA (titer ≥ 1:160), the consistency coefficients of the immunoglobulin(Ig)M-CLIA, immunoglobulin(Ig)G-CLIA and IgM-IFA methods were 93.94%, 75.76%

The emergence and spread of multidrug resistant Enterobacterales (MDR-E) are a global public health issue. This problem also concerns urinary tract infections (UTI), which are the second most frequent infections after respiratory infections. The objective of this study was to determine MDR-E frequency and to characterize MDR-E isolates from patients with community-acquired UTIs in Djibouti, Republic of Djibouti. From 800 clinical urinary samples collected at the Mer Rouge Laboratory, Djibouti, from January to July 2019, 142 were identified as Enterobacterales (age range of the 142 patients mea

The aim of this retrospective study was to highlight the differences in antibiotic resistance between Hospital-acquired and Community-acquired urinary tract infections (UTIs). Antimicrobial UTIs resistance data were collected from March 2011 to March 2018. Uropathogens were identified from 41,715 patients using routine laboratory methods. Differences in antibiotic resistance between Hospital and Community (non-hospitalized) patients were statistically validated. Odds ratio (OR) and p-values was used to determine whether a particular exposure (hospitalization) was a risk factor for a particular

Background: Antimicrobial drug resistance in community-acquired (CA) infections is a growing problem. Knowing the local epidemiology is essential to design empirical antibiotic therapy. Therefore, we conducted this study to evaluate the resistance patterns of microorganisms isolated from surgical samples of community-acquired intra-abdominal infections (IAIs) and to determine the factors associated with resistance. Methods: We analyzed retrospectively the records of patients treated from January 2015 to June 2017 who had IAIs with positives aerobic cultures performed in the first 72 hours afte

The study of the etiological agents of community-acquired pulmonary infections is important to guide empirical therapy, requires constant updating, and has a substantial impact on the prognosis of patients. The objective of this study is to determine prospectively the etiology of community-acquired pulmonary infections in hospitalized adults living with HIV. Patients were submitted to an extended microbiological investigation that included molecular methods. The microbiological findings were evaluated according to severity of the disease and pneumococcal vaccine status. Two hundred twenty-four

BACKGROUND: The emergence of community-acquired methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) has altered the management of pediatric musculoskeletal infections. Yet, institution-to-institution differences in MRSA virulence may exist, suggesting a need to carefully examine local epidemiological characteristics. The purpose of this study was to compare MRSA and methicillin-sensitive S. aureus (MSSA) musculoskeletal infections with respect to prevalence and complexity of clinical care over the past decade at a single children's hospital.
METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed a series of pat

Streptococcus agalactiae, a colonizing agent in pregnant women and the main cause of neonatal sepsis and meningitis, has been increasingly associated with invasive disease in nonpregnant adults. We collected a total of 87 non-repetitive S. agalactiae isolates causing community-acquired (CA) and hospital-acquired (HA) infections in nonpregnant adults from a teaching hospital in Shanghai between 2009 and 2013. We identified and characterized their antibiotic resistance, sequence type (ST), serotype, virulence, and biofilm formation. The most frequent STs were ST19 (29.9%), ST23 (16.1%), ST12 (13

INTRODUCTION: Moraxella catarrhalis previously considered as commensal of upper respiratory tract has gained importance as a pathogen responsible for respiratory tract infections. Its beta-lactamase-producing ability draws even more attention toward its varying patterns of resistance.
METHODS: This was an observational study conducted to evaluate the prevalence and resistance pattern of M. catarrhalis. Patients aged 20-80 years admitted in the Department of Chest Medicine of Liaquat National Hospital from March 2012 to December 2012 were included in the study. Respiratory samples of sputum, t

BACKGROUND: Mycoplasma pneumoniae (M. pneumoniae) is widely recognised as an important cause of community-acquired lower respiratory tract infection (LRTI) in children. Pulmonary manifestations are typically tracheobronchitis or pneumonia but M. pneumoniae is also implicated in wheezing episodes in both asthmatic and non-asthmatic individuals. Although antibiotics are used to treat LRTIs, a review of several major textbooks offers conflicting advice for using antibiotics in the management of M. pneumoniae LRTI in children.
OBJECTIVES: To determine whether antibiotics are effective in the trea

BACKGROUND: The incidence of community-acquired methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (CA-MRSA) infections in children has increased dramatically over the past decade. CA-MRSA infections are often resistant to standard outpatient antibiotics and present a large burden to the health care system and to afflicted families.
OBJECTIVES: Our aims were to characterize the patterns of CA-MRSA resistance to common antibiotics and to identify significant risk factors for CA-MRSA infection in healthy children at a large urban hospital. Additional goals were to discover the prevalence of CA-MRSA in

Antimicrobial resistance among clinical isolates of Streptococcus pneumoniae (n = 49), Haemophilus influenzae (n = 66) and Moraxella catarrhalis (n = 25) from adults with community-acquired lower respiratory tract infections (CALRTI) was assessed in a national surveillance study in Southern Estonia during 2000-2003. In S. pneumoniae, no penicillin resistance and only 2.0% resistance to clarithromycin was present, although intermediate resistance to trimethoprim-sulphamethoxazole (TMP-SMX) reached 24.5%. Beta-lactamase production rate was 96.0% in M. catarrhalis, but only 3.0% in H. influenzae.

Telithromycin is the first ketolide antibacterial to be approved for clinical use. The ketolides represent a novel class of antibacterial agents structurally related to the macrolides, which has been developed specifically to offer an optimal spectrum for the treatment of upper and lower respiratory tract infections (RTIs) caused by common and atypical pathogens, including strains that are resistant to currently used antibiotics. The innovative structural changes that distinguish telithromycin from macrolides contribute to its unique microbiological profile. Its well-balanced spectrum of antib

Once universally susceptible to aminopenicillins and cephalosporins, an increasing percentage of the common respiratory pathogens that cause community-acquired pneumonia (CAP) and acute exacerbations of chronic bronchitis (AECB) are now resistant to these agents and exhibit cross-resistance to other commonly used antibiotics. In an era of multidrug resistance, guidelines for the management of both CAP and AECB can help to guide appropriate antibiotic prescribing, encourage the rational use of antibiotics, which will help to limit the emergence of resistance, and conserve the use of new antimic

Isolates from urine samples obtained during 1999 were identified and their susceptibility to antimicrobial agents studied along with any production of extended-spectrum beta-lactamases (ESBL) by Escherichia coli and Klebsiella pneumoniae. A total of 13774 samples were analysed using an automatic system for the detection of bacterial ATP (Coral, USA). Of these samples, 49% were reported to be positive and uncontaminated; bacteria most frequently isolated were E. coli (47%), Proteus mirabilis (7%), Enterococcus faecalis (6%) and K. pneumoniae (5%). The susceptibility studies showed 37% E. coli s
