Current definitions of specific learning disability (SLD) identify a heterogeneous population that includes individuals with weaknesses in reading, math, or writing, and these academic difficulties often co-occur in many of the same individuals. The Colorado Learning Disabilities Research Center (CLDRC) is an interdisciplinary, multisite research program that uses converging levels of analysis to understand the genetic and environmental etiology, neuropsychology, and developmental outcomes of SLDs in reading (RD), math (MD), and writing (WD), along with the comorbidity between these SLDs and o

BACKGROUND: Cervical dystonia (CD) is the most common form of dystonia. The onset of CD is usually before 60 years of age and it may cause severe functional and psychosocial impairment in everyday life. Recently non-motor symptoms have been reported to occur in CD substantially affecting the quality of life.
METHODS/PATIENTS: We studied comorbidities of patients with primary focal CD in Finland based on ICD-10 codes obtained from the care registry and patient records of 937 confirmed adult isolated focal CD patients between the years 2007-2016. The retirement months and diagnosis of retiremen

In recent years, there has been numerous studies constructing a disease network with diverse sources of data. Many researchers attempted to extend the usage of the disease network by employing machine learning algorithms on various problems such as prediction of comorbidity. The relations between diseases can further be specified into causal relations. When causality is laid on the edges in the network, prediction for comorbid diseases can be more improved. However, not many machine learning algorithms have been developed to concern causality. In this study, we exploit a network based machine

Patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary diseases (COPD) often experience comorbid conditions. The most common comorbidities that have been associated with COPD include cardiovascular diseases, lung cancer, metabolic disorder, osteoporosis, anxiety and depression, skeletal muscle dysfunction, cachexia, gastrointestinal diseases, and other respiratory conditions. Not only are comorbidities common but they also considerably influence disease prognosis and patients׳ health status, and are associated with poor clinical outcomes. However, perusal of literature indicates that little has been done

Myasthenia gravis (MG) is an autoimmune disorder leading to skeletal muscle weakness and fatigability. MG subgroups are defined according to pathogenetic autoantibody (against acetylcholine receptor, muscle-specific tyrosine kinase or lipoprotein receptor-related protein 4), thymus pathology and clinical manifestations. MG patients have an increased risk for concordant autoimmune disease, in particular with early onset MG. Most common comorbidities are thyroid disease, systemic lupus erythematosus and rheumatoid arthritis. Cardiomyositis and subclinical heart dysfunction have been described in

BACKGROUND: Predisposition to complex diseases is explained in part by genetic variation, and complex diseases are frequently comorbid, consistent with pleiotropic genetic variation influencing comorbidity. Genome Wide Association (GWA) studies typically assess association between SNPs and a single-disease phenotype. Fisher meta-analysis combines evidence of association from single-disease GWA studies, assuming that each study is an independent test of the same hypothesis. The Rank Product (RP) method overcomes limitations posed by Fisher assumptions, though RP was not designed for GWA data.

In western industrial nations, cancer is one of the most frequent somatic diseases showing increasing incidence rates. Although the options for medical treatment and the survival rates for most cancer diagnoses have improved over the last few decades, cancer is still a life-threatening illness associated with psychosocial issues, suffering, and distress. Depending on the severity and duration of symptoms, psychosocial distress due to cancer ranges from normal reactions to psychological comorbidity based on ICD classification criteria. In cancer patients, the most frequent psychological diagnos

BACKGROUND: This study examined psychiatric comorbidity in adolescents with a gender identity disorder (GID). We focused on its relation to gender, type of GID diagnosis and eligibility for medical interventions (puberty suppression and cross-sex hormones).
METHODS: To ascertain DSM-IV diagnoses, the Diagnostic Interview Schedule for Children (DISC) was administered to parents of 105 gender dysphoric adolescents.
RESULTS: 67.6% had no concurrent psychiatric disorder. Anxiety disorders occurred in 21%, mood disorders in 12.4% and disruptive disorders in 11.4% of the adolescents. Compared with

Numerous epidemiological and clinical studies found a high incidence of comorbidity in children and adolescent psychiatry. In population of children and adolescents is most often described and researched comorbidity of depression, anxiety disorders, than in hyperkinetic and behavioral disorders, and finally the difficulty in reading (dyslexia) and antisocial behavior disorders. The common occurrence of two diagnoses may be the result of a disorder that has a complex pattern of symptoms, which apparently seems to be two disorders, but in fact is a single disorder. Comorbidity may be two disorde

The normal lung has several defence mechanisms to deal with microorganisms. Lower respiratory infections in the absence of lung disease are therefore relatively infrequent as compared with upper respiratory tract infections in healthy adults. In the setting of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), lower respiratory tract infections, both acute and chronic, occur with increased frequency. As these infections contribute considerably to the clinical course of the patient with COPD, they constitute a significant comorbidity in COPD. Recurrent acute infections by bacterial and/or viral path

The comorbidity of anxiety disorders with pain has received little research attention even though recent studies show that these disorders are as likely to co-occur with chronic pain conditions as depressive disorder. Comorbid anxiety has implications for the impact and outcome of pain conditions. Even though it may be intuitively plausible to suppose that the anxiety occurs in the context of a preexisting pain condition, there is evidence for a reverse causal link and shared risk factors, including distal events occurring in childhood.

Diamond-Blackfan Anemia (DBA) is a congenital erythroid aplasia characterized as a normochromic macrocytic anemia with a selective deficiency in red blood cell precursors in otherwise normocelullar bone marrow. DBA is known to be associated with mental retardation and learning disabilities. Although comorbidities with other psychiatric conditions have not been reported in the existing literature, we report in this paper a case of a DBA patient with previously undiagnosed comorbidity of obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD), successfully treated with sertaline 200 mg/day and valproic acid 600 mg/

There are mounting data supporting comorbidity of fibromyalgia syndrome (FMS) and psychiatric conditions. These include depression, panic disorders, anxiety, and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). The nature of the relationship between depression and FMS is not fully understood, and it was hypothesized that chronic pain causes depression, or vice versa, and that chronic pain syndromes are variants of depression. A link between PTSD symptoms and FMS has been reported, and both conditions share similar symptomatology and pathogenetic mechanisms. Assessment of comorbid psychiatric disorders i

OBJECTIVE: To assess the co-occurrence of fibromyalgia with psychiatric disorders in participants of a fibromyalgia family study.
METHOD: Patients (probands) with fibromyalgia, control probands with rheumatoid arthritis, and first-degree relatives of both groups completed a structured clinical interview and tender point examination. The co-occurrence odds ratio (OR) (the odds of a lifetime comorbid DSM-IV disorder in an individual with fibromyalgia divided by the odds of a lifetime comorbid disorder in an individual without fibromyalgia, adjusted for age and sex) was calculated; observations

Much of the contemporary literature on headache disorders focuses on migraine headaches, despite the fact that tension-type headache (TTH) is highly prevalent and can be as debilitating as migraines. This article reviews the current literature on prevalence rates of psychiatric disorders in TTH populations, psychologic factors associated with TTH, and psychiatric disorders and their relationships with treatment outcomes in TTH. Key conclusions of this review include 1) prevalence rates of TTH vary across clinical and population-based samples; 2) greater TTH chronicity is associated with increa
