Analysis of the predictive qualities of betting odds and FIFA World Ranking: evidence from the 2006, 2010 and 2014 Football World Cups.

The present study aims to investigate the ability of a new framework enabling to derive more detailed model-based predictions from ranking systems. These were compared to predictions from the bet market including data from the World Cups 2006, 2010, and 2014. The results revealed that the FIFA World Ranking has essentially improved its predictive qualities compared to the bet market since the mode of calculation was changed in 2006. While both predictors were useful to obtain accurate predictions in general, the world ranking was able to outperform the bet market significantly for the World Cu

A contingent view of reactions to objective pay conditions: interdependence among pay structure characteristics and pay relative to internal and external referents.

The authors studied the general proposition that because social comparisons are so central to how people react to pay, the effect of an important pay condition likely depends on a social pay comparison that is relevant to that condition. To investigate this, the authors used actual pay data on more than 2,000 public school teachers across more than 400 school districts and tested whether pay equity perceptions resulted from interactions among objective measures of structural (pay dispersion, entry-level pay, pay range maximum, external competitiveness) and individual (pay relative to internal

Evolutionary Psychology of Eating Disorders: An Explorative Study in Patients With Anorexia Nervosa and Bulimia Nervosa.

Prior research on non-clinical samples has lent support to the sexual competition hypothesis for eating disorders (SCH) where the drive for thinness can be seen as an originally adaptive strategy for women to preserve a nubile female shape, which, when driven to an extreme, may cause eating disorders. Restrictive versus impulsive eating behavior may also be relevant for individual differences in allocation of resources to either mating effort or somatic growth, reflected in an evolutionary concept called "Life History Theory" (LHT). In this study, we aimed to test the SCH and predictions from

Sorption behavior of Cd, Cu, Pb, and Zn and their interactions in phytoremediated soil.

The aim of our study was to compare the sorption properties of a contaminated soil before and after two types of phytoremediation (natural phytoextraction vs. phytostabilization with dolomite limestone (DL) application). Soil from a pot experiment in controlled greenhouse conditions performed for two vegetation periods was used for the study. Lead, as the main contaminant in the studied soil, was easily desorbed by Cu, especially due to the increased affinity of Cu for soil organic matter; hence input of Cu to the studied soil can present another environmental risk in soils contaminated with o

Repeated competition influences neural response, but not neurogenesis or physiology, in the fighting fish Betta splendens.

Territorial competition has costs such as wounds received, energy spent, and elevated chronic stress. How does Betta splendens, a species that has been artificially selected for enhanced territorial aggression, maintain high levels of metabolically costly displays (gill flaring) over repeated days of territorial competition? Here we conducted two experiments. The first exposed male Betta splendens to a size-matched unresolvable competition (a mirror) daily for three weeks. We found that Betta splendens indeed maintain gill flaring throughout the competition schedule and exhibited no baseline s

Dextrorotatory opioids induce stereotyped behavior in Sprague-Dawley and Dark Agouti rats.

Dextromethorphan and dextrorphan elicited a stereotyped behavioral syndrome in rats indistinguishable from that produced by PCP and other non-competitive NMDA antagonists. The rank order of potency for the induction of stereotyped behavior in male Sprague-Dawley rats was: MK-801>PCP>(+/-)cyclazocine>dextrorphan>(+/-)ketamine>dextromethorphan. These behavioral potencies were significantly correlated (0.91; P<0.05) with their respective affinities for high affinity [3H]dextrorphan-labelled NMDA receptors in rat forebrain membranes. To address the propensity of dextromethorphan to induce stereoty

The nexus of central-local environmental policy making: The impact of central environmental inspection on local community governance.

Understanding how intergovernmental competition shapes local environmental regulation under top-down supervision is critical for optimizing environmental governance systems. This study addresses the research gap in dynamic strategic behaviors of local governments during central environmental inspections (CEI) by constructing a two-stage decision-making model that integrates environmental regulation competition and economic resource competition. We validate the model through equilibrium solution reasoning, numerical simulations, and a case study of twin cities, exploring the conditional effects

The competitive side of social living: Maternal hormonal programming and phenotypic outcomes in blue tit offspring.

Social interactions are vital in animal life, providing access to key information about foraging opportunities, mates, and predators. Yet in highly competitive environments, being social can be costly, as increased interaction rates may lead to more frequent aggressive encounters, favouring the development of more competitive phenotypes. Remarkably, these environmental pressures can have transgenerational effects. For example, mothers can respond to their social environment by transferring non-genetic compounds, such as hormones, to their offspring. However, evidence for an effect of social de

Spoils division rules shape aggression between natural groups.

Violent intergroup conflicts cause widespread harm; yet, throughout human history, destructive hostilities occur time and time again1,2. Benefits that are obtainable by victorious parties include territorial expansion, deterrence and ascendency in between-group resource competition3-6. Many of these are non-excludable goods that are available to all group members, whereas participation entails substantial individual risks and costs. Thus, a collective action problem emerges, raising the question why individuals participate in such campaigns at all7-9. Distinguishing offensive and defensive int

Focal ischemia enhances the adverse effect potential of N-methyl-D-aspartate receptor antagonists in rats.

Recent clinical trials with non-competitive and competitive N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) receptor antagonists in patients with stroke have shown that these patients develop more adverse effects, particularly psychomimetic effects such as hallucinations and agitation, than normal volunteers at equivalent doses. We therefore examined whether such increased adverse effect potential of NMDA antagonists also occurs in a rat model of permanent focal ischemia. For this purpose, the right middle cerebral artery was occluded under halothane anesthesia, and behavioral alterations in response to the non-c

Human wagering behavior depends on opponents' faces.

Research in competitive games has exclusively focused on how opponent models are developed through previous outcomes and how peoples' decisions relate to normative predictions. Little is known about how rapid impressions of opponents operate and influence behavior in competitive economic situations, although such subjective impressions have been shown to influence cooperative decision-making. This study investigates whether an opponent's face influences players' wagering decisions in a zero-sum game with hidden information. Participants made risky choices in a simplified poker task while being

The role of the NMDA receptor in alcohol relapse: a pharmacological mapping study using the alcohol deprivation effect.

Modulators of glutamate receptors especially of the N-methyl-D-aspartate receptors (NMDARs) have recently been suggested as putative pharmacotherapeutic agents in the treatment of alcohol relapse. However, at present it is not clear, which binding and modulatory sites of the NMDAR are involved in relapse behavior. We, therefore, performed a pharmacological mapping study in long-term alcohol drinking rats using the alcohol deprivation effect (ADE) as a model for relapse behavior. In a comprehensive fashion, we studied dose-response curves, employing the following selective pharmacological agent

Consistent individual competitive ability in rainbow trout as a proxy for coping style and its lack of correlation with cortisol responsiveness upon acute stress.

For a given fish species, individuals are different in their ability to cope with stressors; each individual has its own set of physiological and behavioral responses to stress (stress-coping style). This individual diversity is of importance when considering the welfare of fish reared in aquaculture facilities. In this study with rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) we investigated the link between the ability to compete for food of each individual (used as a proxy of dominance behavior/proactive stress-coping style) and its ability to cope with stress; we hypothesized that fish that are bette

On-Chip in Situ Monitoring of Competitive Interfacial Anionic Chemisorption as a Descriptor for Oxygen Reduction Kinetics.

The development of future sustainable energy technologies relies critically on our understanding of electrocatalytic reactions occurring at the electrode-electrolyte interfaces, and the identification of key reaction promoters and inhibitors. Here we present a systematic in situ nanoelectronic measurement of anionic surface adsorptions (sulfates, halides, and cyanides) on ultrathin platinum nanowires during active electrochemical processes, probing their competitive adsorption behavior with oxygenated species and correlating them to the electrokinetics of the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). Monoamine-depleted mice were injected intracerebrally with the competitive NMDA receptor antagonist AP-5, the non-competitive NMDA antagonist MK-801 or the AMPA-kainate receptor antagonist CNQX. A marked locomotor stimulation was produced when AP-5 was injected into the nucleus accumbens, but not when injected into the dorsal striatum. Likewise, CNQX stimulated locomotor activity when injected into the nucleus accumbens. Neither AP-5 nor CNQX p

Facial hair whorl location, behavior, and ocular temperature as a physiological stress indicator in young Pura Raza Española dressage horses.

INTRODUCTION: Behavioral and emotional reactivity assessment in sport horses is essential for optimizing their management and sports performance, particularly in equestrian disciplines such as Dressage. This study investigates, in Pura Raza Española (PRE) horses, the association between facial hair whorl (FHW) patterns, behavioral traits, and physiological stress responses using ocular temperature (OT) assessed with infrared thermography as, an objective, non-invasive physiological stress indicator. METHODS: A total of 98 male PRE horses, aged 4-6 years old and all gray coated, were evaluated

Environmental fluctuations alter the competitive trade-offs of group size in a social primate.

Larger animal groups are widely understood to require more space and expend more energy to mitigate the foraging costs of within-group competition. Yet between-group interactions and shifting resource distributions can obscure links between group size and behaviour, making responses to demographic change difficult to predict. Here, using 33 years of observational data from 12 neighbouring white-faced capuchin (Cebus imitator) groups in Costa Rica, combined with remotely sensed environmental data, we show that within- and between-group competition jointly shape space use, with their relative im

Oviposition behavior of the wheat stem sawfly when encountering plants infested with cryptic conspecifics.

Insect herbivores typically oviposit on the most suitable hosts, but choices can be modulated by detection of potential competition among conspecifics, especially when eggs are deposited cryptically. Larvae of the wheat stem sawfly, Cephus cinctus Norton, developing within an already infested stem, experience elevated risk when only one will survive because of cannibalism. To increase our understanding of host selection when the choices made by females can lead to severe intraspecific competition, females were presented with either uninfested wheat plants or with plants previously exposed to o
