Preventing tablet defects through vacuum-assisted deaeration of a powder bed.

Lamination is a common defect observed during pharmaceutical tablet compression and can be attributed to air entrapment (lamination type 1) within the powder bed. In this study, a novel vacuum-inducing chamber was implemented to remove air from the powder bed prior to compaction, thereby enabling, for the first time, a systematic investigation of lamination type 1 while decoupling air entrapment from other contributing factors. Microcrystalline cellulose (MCC) was compacted on a Huxley Bertram compaction simulator equipped with a vacuum chamber under systematically varied compressive stresses,

The effect of force applied to the left paratracheal oesophagus on air entry into the gastric antrum during positive-pressure ventilation using a facemask.

Cricoid force is widely applied to decrease the risk of pulmonary aspiration and gastric antral insufflation of air during positive-pressure ventilation, yet its efficacy remains controversial. We compared manual oesophageal compression at the low left paratracheal and cricoid levels for the prevention of gastric antral air insufflation during positive-pressure ventilation by facemask in patients scheduled for elective surgery under general anaesthesia. After gaining written consent, participants were randomly allocated by sealed envelope to one of three groups: oesophageal compression by 30 N

Can my patient dive after a first episode of primary spontaneous pneumothorax? A systematic review of the literature.

INTRODUCTION: Patients with prior primary spontaneous pneumothorax (PSP) frequently seek clearance to dive. Despite wide consensus in precluding compressed-air diving in this population, there is a paucity of data to support this decision. We reviewed the literature reporting the risk of PSP recurrence. METHODS: A literature search was performed in PubMed and Web of Science using predefined terms. Studies published in English reporting the recurrence rate after a first PSP were included. RESULTS: Forty studies (n=3,904) were included. Risk of PSP recurrence ranged 0-67% (22 ± 15.5%; mean ± S

The distribution of limb pain in decompression sickness.

BACKGROUND: For many years there has been a widely held but largely unsubstantiated belief that pain in the upper limb in decompression sickness (DCS) is associated with bounce diving, whereas compressed air workers, saturation divers and high altitude aviators are more susceptible to involvement of the lower limbs. HYPOTHESIS: The hypothesis of counter current exchange of inert gas, modulated by changes in tissue temperature, has been evaluated as a possible mechanism to explain the reported distribution of limb pain in DCS. METHODS: An extensive review of over 19,000 cases of limb pain dec

Probing the limits of human deep diving.

Divers breathing compressed air are restricted to 45 m depth because of the narcotic effects of nitrogen and toxic action of oxygen at increased pressures. Substitution of oxygen-helium for compressed air has permitted divers to reach 600 m. However, at depths greater than 160 m, signs and symptoms of the high pressure nervous syndrome (h.p.n.s.) occur, with tremors, myoclonic jerking, nausea, vomiting, fatigue, somnolence, e.e.g. changes, dyspnoea, and poor sleep with nightmares. It has been the objective of this Laboratory to ameliorate the symptoms of pressure-induced h.p.n.s. by the additi

Microbiological Contamination Risk in SCUBA Diving Cylinders: An Experimental Study.

INTRODUCTION: The microbiological safety of compressed air in SCUBA diving cylinders is a crucial yet often overlooked aspect of diving safety. Despite regular maintenance, microbial contamination can cause respiratory illnesses, especially during the air-filling procedure. Given the impact of temperature increases on bacterial viability, this study evaluates the survival of Streptococcus pneumoniae (S. pneumoniae) and Pseudomonas aeruginosa (P. aeruginosa) within diving SCUBA cylinders during and after the air-filling process. METHODS: A mixture of Streptococcus pneumoniae (ATCC 49619) and P

Effect of short-term exposure to low levels of SO2 and NOx on pulmonary function and methacholine and allergen bronchial sensitivities in asthmatic children.

Air pollution is an inevitable consequence of industrialization. Continuous exposure to air pollution may cause or trigger respiratory allergic diseases. This study was designed to evaluate whether short-term, 5-min exposures to low levels of sulfur dioxide (SO2) and nitrogen oxides (NOx) influence pulmonary function and increase bronchial sensitivity to methacholine and specific allergens. Five male and 1 female mite-sensitive asthmatic children (mean age 12 y) were studied during symptom-free periods. Pulmonary function tests were conducted after breathing 5, 15, 35, 65, and 105 breaths of c

[Compression pneumatocele of the lacrimal sac].

Case report on a 39-year-old man who for five years suffered from a recurrent, firm, crepitant swelling in the medial canthal region after coughing and sneezing. The swelling could be eliminated by digital compression. During a severe bout of sneezing a walnut-sized swelling suddenly occurred which could not be eliminated by compression. Echographic and intraoperative findings confirmed the diagnosis of a large, diverticulous pneumatocele that had compressed the lacrimal sac to such an extent that the entrapped air could not escape. Endoscopy of the nose revealed a wide nasolacrimal ostium, wi

Fatal Air Weapon Injuries: Two Unusual Cases and Review of the Forensic Literature.

Air weapons use compressed gas to fire projectiles without igniting gunpowder. Although commonly perceived as recreational devices, modern air rifles can reach muzzle velocities exceeding 1000 feet per second and are capable of inflicting fatal injuries. This report describes 2 unusual fatalities from air weapon chest wounds: a 15-year-old male who sustained a self-inflicted injury while handling an air rifle, and a 61-year-old male shot by another individual. Both victims died shortly after sustaining the wound despite medical intervention. Autopsies revealed penetrating chest injuries with r

A Review of Oxygen Use During Chest Compressions in Newborns-A Meta-Analysis of Animal Data.

Background: International consensus statements for resuscitation of newborn infants recommend provision of 100% oxygen once chest compressions are required. However, 100% oxygen exacerbates reperfusion injury and reduces cerebral perfusion in newborn babies. Objective: We aimed to establish whether resuscitation with air during chest compression is feasible and safe in newborn infants compared with 100% oxygen. Methods: Systematic search of PubMed, Google Scholar and CINAHL for articles examining variable oxygen concentrations during chest compressions in term newborns. Results: Overall, no hu

The indigenous Sea Gypsy divers of Thailand's west coast: measurement of carbon monoxide in the breathing air.

Approximately 400 indigenous divers live and work on Thailand's west coast. They dive with surface supplied air from primitive compressor units mounted on open boats which measure from seven to 11 meters in length. It was suspected that carbon monoxide was present in the breathing air of at least the gasoline-driven compressor units. To determine the presence of carbon monoxide gas in the breathing air, compressed air from the compressor was pumped through the diver air supply hose through a plenum (monitoring) chamber established on the boat. After a compressor warm-up of 15 minutes, the divi

Ambient air and its potential effects on conception in vitro.

Incidences of chemical air contamination (CAC) are common in assisted reproductive technology, but not reported in peer review format. Justified fear of car and industrial emissions clearly exists among reproductive specialists, but standards for air contents and gaseous emission limits have not been reported. Here, we describe air sampling methods and assay systems which can be applied to any laboratory or laboratory item. It was found that unfiltered outside air may be cleaner than high efficiency particulate air filtration (HEPA) filtered laboratory air or air obtained from incubators, due

Decompression Sickness: Current Recommendations.

Decompression sickness (DCS, "bends") is the clinical condition triggered by generation of bubbles in tissues or blood due to supersaturation of inert gas during or after a reduction in ambient pressure. The condition can occur in association with compressed gas diving, compressed air ("caisson") work or rapid decompression to high altitude or reduced cabin pressure such as extravehicular activity (EVA) in space suits. It can also be triggered by mild reduction in ambient pressure such as during commercial aircraft flight after scuba diving. Its manifestations range from joint or muscle pain,

Microbiological monitoring of scuba cylinders under routine filling and seasonal diving conditions.

INTRODUCTION: The aim of this study was to monitor the microbiological status of the inner surfaces of scuba cylinders under routine air filling conditions and to assess whether microbiological contamination emerges or persists over time. METHODS: A prospective longitudinal microbiological study was conducted using two complementary sampling models. Serial sampling of a steel scuba cylinder and its associated compressor air filter was performed at three-day intervals over 45 days. To assess reproducibility under operational conditions, additional microbiological sampling was performed from 27

Unintended subdural anesthesia and subdural air bubbles after attempted epidural anesthesia in a patient undergoing cesarean section.

BACKGROUND: Unintended subdural anesthesia accompanied by air bubbles compressing the cauda after attempting epidural anesthesia is rare. CASES: A 41-year-old pregnant woman was scheduled to undergo epidural anesthesia for cesarean section. After attempting epidural anesthesia, she experienced prolonged hypotension and recovery time, especially in the right extremity. Through magnetic resonance imaging we found subdural air bubbles compressing the right side of the cauda equina in the L3 region. Thus, we considered unintended subdural anesthesia and performed conservative management with clos

Comparative study of air and water measurements of peak and stabilized static urethral pressures.

Air and water were forced through female dogs' urethras to determine static urethral pressures. The cauda equina was sectioned to eliminate reflex responses to urethral manipulation, and the urethras were compressed circumferentially with inflatable Silastic cuffs. The peak and stabilized urethral pressures were recorded at flow rates between 20 and 150 ml./min. while cuff pressures were varied between 0 and 100 cm. of water. When the fluid recordings of static urethral pressure were compared with Millar transducer tip catheter measurements of urethral pressure, there were no statistically sig

Fast, variable stiffness-induced braided coiled artificial muscles.

Biomimetic actuation technologies with high muscle strokes, cycle rates, and work capacities are necessary for robotic systems. We present a muscle type that operates based on changes in muscle stiffness caused by volume expansion. This muscle is created by coiling a mechanically strong braid, in which an elastomer hollow tube is adhesively attached inside. We show that the muscle reversibly contracts by 47.3% when driven by an oscillating input air pressure of 120 kilopascals at 10 Hz. It generates a maximum power density of 3.0 W/g and demonstrates a mechanical contractile efficiency of 74%.
