Compression therapy is the basic therapy in phlebology and lymphology. The pressure under the bandages has to exceed the intravenous pressure especially in standing position. Different compression materials such as short stretch systems, long stretch bandages and compression garments work differently on ambulatory venous hypertension, speed of reducing edema and arterial flow. Compression with high stiffness, inelastic materials is more effective than compression with low stiffness, elastic materials. These materials have to be placed correctly. Inelastic systems should be applied with high in

Based on our investigations, the mode of action of compression bandages is discussed ant the physiological and physical principles of this therapy are reviewed. The different basic forms of compression therapy, for example, non-elastic bandages, elastic bandages, use of foam rubber and sponge rubber inserts as well as compression stockings, are mentioned. The side effectes of compression therapy are treated and the indications for compression therapy in superficial and deep thromboses, postthrombotic syndrome and lymphedema are discussed.

Therapy in the acute phase of deep vein thrombosis aims to prevent the longitudinal growth of the thrombus as well as the life-threatening complication of pulmonary embolism. Compression therapy is part of all revascularisative and conservative treatment strategies, but hardly mentioned in most of the literature. Clinical efficacy of a sufficient compression therapy in patients with acute deep vein thrombosis is marked by a quick ease of subjective complaints as well as a reduction of the edema. The long-term risk of deep vein thrombosis, the postthrombotic syndrome, is avoidable by the use of

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: In Denmark, all blood banks use the same standardized donor vigilance system, enabling comparisons of adverse reactions across the country's five regions. At several collection sites, a compression bandage is applied over the venipuncture site after donation. In this study, we investigate whether using a compression bandage is more effective than using a non-compression bandage in preventing delayed bleeding.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Data were collected from four of the Danish regions (data from the fifth region were incomplete) between 2021 and 2024 using the Danish

OBJECTIVE: This was a systematic review of the literature to determine which compression method is superior in promoting ulcer healing and reducing recurrence in patients with lower extremity venous ulcer disease.
METHODS: We conducted a comprehensive search of multiple databases for randomized and nonrandomized comparative studies from 1990 to December 2013.
RESULTS: We identified 36 studies and two Cochrane systematic reviews. Many studies had moderate risk of bias. We found no overall difference between compression stockings vs compression bandages with respect to ulcer healing, time to u

For the treatment of phlebological and lymphological diseases as well as constitutional edema diseases, a discussion of innovative concepts of medical compression therapy is essential. It is recommended that medical compression stockings should always be prescribed based on symptoms and with the lowest effective interface pressure to optimize the tolerability of compression therapy. Likewise, medical compression stockings with an integrated care formula, but also the application of additional skincare can improve the quality of life and compliance in patients with chronic venous insufficiency.

OBJECTIVE: To assess the cost-effectiveness of using amelogenin plus compression bandaging versus compression bandaging alone in treating non-healing venous leg ulcers (VLUs) of over six months duration, from the perspective of the national health service in England.
METHOD: A 12-month Markov model was constructed that depicted the management of a chronic, non-healing VLU of over six months duration. The model considers the decision by a clinician to treat a recalcitrant VLU with amelogenin plus compression bandaging or compression bandaging alone, and was used to estimate the relative cost-e

BACKGROUND: Firm bandaging of the knee following knee replacement may prevent bleeding into the joint by a tamponade effect. We studied the pressure required to achieve tamponade, and then clinically compared the use of a compression bandage with the use of a standard crêpe bandage, with or without a drain.
METHOD: Transducers were used to measure the pressure achieved on the surface of the knee under different bandages, and within the knee following release of the tourniquet. We prospectively compared 3 series of 50 patients each: (1) with compression bandaging from toes to mid-thigh, (2) wi

The benefit of lower limb compression therapy is not limited to chronic venous insufficiency or/and lymphoedema. Thanks to its anti-edema and anti-inflammatory effects, compression therapy is considered a beneficial adjuvant therapy to treat atypical wounds, inflammatory dermatoses, cellulitis, and traumatic wounds in the absence of contraindications. Strict contraindications are limited to severe peripheral arterial disease and decompensated heart failure. The variability of commercially available compression materials and systems, such as short-stretch bandages, multi-component systems, zinc

Orthostatic hypotension is common in the elderly and is often associated with increased morbidity and mortality. Compression bandages are recommended as a first-line treatment but there is little evidence of their efficacy in literature. A case-control study involving 52 patients was carried out to test the efficacy of the bandages. In the group with orthostatic hypotension, compression improved the symptoms without correcting the blood pressure readings.

Objective A randomized clinical trial was performed to compare the effectiveness of unmarked bandages and customized bandages with visual markers in reproducing the desired sub-bandage pressure during self-bandaging by patients. Method Ninety patients were randomly allocated to two groups ("customized bandages" and "unmarked bandages") and asked to perform self-bandaging three times. The achievement of a pressure between 35 and 45 mmHg in at least two of the three attempts was defined as adequate quality. Results Adequate quality was achieved by 33.0% when applying the unmarked bandages, and 6

AIM: Leg compression bandaging is the mainstay of venous ulcer treatment, yet little is known about the impact of therapeutic compression levels on arterial haemodynamics. In this study, the effect of foot-to-knee, four-layer compression bandaging on below-knee arterial pulsatile blood flow was assessed by nuclear magnetic resonance flowmetry.
METHODS: In 14 healthy supine subjects, bilateral pulsatile blood flow measured at five below-knee sites without compression; and during compression of one leg to an average malleolar sub-bandage pressure of 40.7±4.0 mmHg.
RESULTS: The forefoot-to-knee

BACKGROUND: The pressure exerted by a compression device on a part of the body corresponds to the dosage of the compression therapy. Therefore, the pressure course under compression materials should be investigated in different clinical situations.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: Pressure measurements were carried out under different compression materials in lying, standing and walking positions within the framework of training, self-experimentation and in patients with venous leg ulcers.
RESULTS: The results showed that the pressure varied considerably depending on the material used, the firmness of

BACKGROUND: Medical compression therapy is widely used to treat phlebologic diseases. Compression bandages as well as compression stockings are used. Compression has been identified to be an effective conservative therapy for the healing of venous ulcers and other indications. Thus, the evidence for the use of medical compression therapy and for which indications is presented.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Review and systematic presentation of the evidence-based use of compression. The current literature, guidelines, and consensus statements were searched and the indications for compression therapy

Graduated compression therapy is the recognised gold standard for the treatment of venous ulcers, usually in the form of four-layer bandaging. Unfortunately with some patients the bulkiness of the bandages leads to non-compliance. An alternative to bandaging could be the use of below-knee graduated compression hosiery. This article will review the purpose and function of compression hosiery including details of patient assessment, measurement and compliance issues. It will provide the basic principles that should enable nurses to successfully treat patients with venous ulceration using compres

This meta-review aimed to appraise and synthesise findings from existing systematic reviews that measured the impact of compression therapy on venous leg ulcers healing. We searched five databases to identify potential papers; three authors extracted data, and a fourth author adjudicated the findings. The AMSTAR-2 tool was used for quality appraisal and the certainty of the evidence was appraised using GRADEpro. Data analysis was undertaken using RevMan. We identified 12 systematic reviews published between 1997 and 2021. AMSTAR-2 assessment identified three as high quality, five as moderate q

AIM: Self-application of properly performed compression bandages is generally considered as problematic. Therefore, the aim of this study was to measure the pressure of self-applied short stretch adjustable compression wrap compression systems (Juxta fit™) and to compare the results with the pressure achieved by bandaging other legs using the same material.
METHODS: In the two training courses for nurses, specifically interested in leg ulcer treatment, the new bandage type of adjustable compression wrap was explained and workshops were organized, in which the interface pressure achieved by Ju

Lymphoedema and chronic venous insufficiency with venous leg ulceration have long been viewed as distinctly separate entities. This article explores how toe bandaging, a skill used routinely in lymphoedema practice, might benefit people being bandaged to treat venous leg ulcers. A small research study identified that 12 out of 124 people receiving high compression bandaging for venous leg ulcers without toe bandaging developed toe ulceration during a 2-year period. A second study has found no episodes of toe ulceration in patients receiving toe bandaging as part of their care. Unfortunately, t
