Influence of two paraffin wax chewing gums with different con-sistencies on the stimulated salivary flow rate.

This study investigated and compared the consistency and compressive strength of two commercially available paraffin wax chewing gums (Aurosan (AU) and GC Europe (GC)), as well as their impact on stimulated salivary flow rate. Instrumental texture analysis was uti-lized to assess the consistency and compressive strength of AU and GC during a 7-min chewing period. Subsequently, stimulated salivary flow rate (sSFR) was evaluated in healthy subjects using AU and GC over a 7-minute period. The compressive strengths from the pre-liminary test were compared over time with the sialometry data. Eighty

Fatigue fracture of human lumbar vertebrae.

Fatigue fracture of human lumbar vertebrae under cyclic axial compressive load has been investigated in vitro for load magnitudes between 20% and 70% of the ultimate compressive strength and cycle numbers between 1 and 5000. In addition, the dependence of the ultimate compressive strength of lumbar vertebrae on trabecular bone density and geometric dimensions was investigated. Seventy specimens of human lumbar motion segments were subjected to a fatigue test; 35 specimens were subjected to an ultimate strength test. The results state the probability of a lumbar vertebra encountering a fatigue

Geometric and Compressive Characteristics of the Additive-Manufactured Rhombicuboctahedron Structure and Its Application.

In this study, the geometric and compressive characteristics of a rhombicuboctahedron architecture fabricated by material extrusion were investigated. The compressive results showed that increasing the number of unit cells led to the specific compressive strength remaining nearly constant. In contrast, as the strut thickness increased, the structures exhibited higher compressive strength, specific compressive strength, and elastic modulus. In particular, the thickest configuration exhibited no premature fracture or abrupt stress drop, instead demonstrating a progressive densification behavior

Experimental study on the influence of recycled aggregate substitution rate on the mechanical properties of recycled aggregate concrete under sulfate erosion conditions.

To investigate the degradation of recycled aggregate concrete (RAC) under sulfate attack, four groups of RAC cubic specimens (168 in total) were prepared. The influence of recycled coarse aggregate (RA) replacement ratio on the mechanical properties of RAC under sulfate exposure was analyzed. Strength degradation at different exposure durations was assessed, and microstructural changes were examined using scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The results show that: (1) both compressive and splitting tensile strengths decrease with increasing RA replacement ratio, with the reduction in splitting

Influence of the Cortical Layer Thickness and Trabecular Layer Pattern Density on 3D-Printed Femur Strength.

This paper presents the process of preparing and conducting a uniaxial compression test, developing the results, and determining the compressive strength of a femur made using 3D printing technology. The study considers the variable thickness of the outer layer-imitating cortical bone tissue-and the varying density of the inner layer-imitating trabecular bone tissue-which, with further analysis, may aim to replicate different states of osteoporosis. The compressive strength of the bones varied depending on the thickness of the outer layer and the filling degree. Failure patterns were observed,

Interface improvement and multiscale assessment of recycled concrete aggregates with epoxy resin polymer.

Recycled concrete aggregate (RCA) exhibits challenges like weak bonding, high porosity, and inferior strength compared to natural aggregates. This study evaluates the effect of epoxy resin polymer treatment on RCA on enhancing compressive and split tensile strengths in concrete, replacing natural aggregates with untreated RCA (UTRAC) and treated RCA (ERTAC) at 25%, 50%, 75%, and 100% levels. The tests were conducted at 3, 7, and 28 days. UTRAC showed reductions of up to 26.32% in compressive strength and 35.38% in tensile strength at 100% replacement; ERTAC outperformed control concrete (CC) w

Strength properties of some gypsum-bonded casting investments.

The present investigations show that there is no correlation between on the one hand the wet and the dry compressive strength of the three gypsum-bonded investments studied and on the other the compressive strength of the investments at burn-out temperature. The study also demonstrated that there is no correlation between the compressive strength and the fracture resistance of sharp edges of the investment mold when exposed to the impact of the casting alloy entering the mold. The inconveniences caused by the fracture of such edges are prevented by a moderate rounding of the corresponding part

Analysis of the Compressive Behavior of Plywood Under Seawater and Cryogenic Temperature Effects.

The global demand for liquefied natural gas (LNG) has led to a significant increase in the number of LNG carriers (LNGCs), consequently elevating the risk of operational accidents. Unlike conventional vessels, LNGCs present a high risk of fire and explosion and involve extensive repair times and costs due to the complex structure of the cargo containment system (CCS). This study investigates the effects of seawater exposure on the uni-axial compressive properties of plywood used in LNGC CCS structures, with the goal of establishing material strength criteria that could reduce repair requiremen

Fatigue fracture of human lumbar vertebrae.

Fatigue fracture of human lumbar vertebrae under cyclic axial compressive load is investigated between 1 and 5000 load cycles and for load magnitudes between 30 and 70% of the ultimate compressive strength of human lumbar vertebrae. In addition, it is shown that the ultimate compressive strength of human lumbar vertebrae can be predicted from trabecular bone density determined by quantitative computed tomography in combination with a measurement of the area of the vertebral end plate.

The "Z-effect" phenomenon defined: a laboratory study.

The Z-effect phenomenon is a potential complication of two lag screw intramedullary nail designs used for fixation of intertrochanteric hip fractures, in which the inferior lag screw migrates laterally and the superior lag screw migrates medially during physiologic loading. The current investigation was undertaken in an attempt to reproduce the Z-effect phenomenon in a laboratory setting. Sixteen different simulated femoral head and neck constructs having varying compressive strengths were created using four densities of solid polyurethane foam and instrumented with a two-screw cephalomedullar

Study on the mechanical properties of rock with cross fracture under biaxial compression cyclic loading and unloading.

In this study, biaxial compression cyclic loading and unloading tests are performed on rock-like samples that contain a single group of cross cracks. The effects of angle α between the main crack and load direction, the angle between the main and secondary cracks, and the number of cycles of biaxial compression cyclic loading and unloading on the coabsmpressive strength and crack evolution of the samples are investigated. The effects of the number of groups of cross cracks and number of cycles of cyclic loading and unloading on the compressive strength and crack evolution are then examined. Wh

Experimental investigation on partial cement replacement with binary blended bagasse ash and calcined dolomite for enhanced C-25 grade concrete performance.

Cement is a globally produced building material and a crucial component of every construction project. Alternative materials, mostly agro-industrial wastes, are emerging as potential cement replacements due to high carbon dioxide emissions associated with cement manufacturing and rising cost of cement. Numerous naturally occurring materials like rice husk ash, corn cob ash, fly ash, slag, silica fume, bagasse ash (BA), and natural pozzolans are used as partial substituents for cement in concrete and mortars due to their strength, cost-effectiveness, and environmental benefits. BA is frequently

Tuning the Gel Network Structure and Rheology of Acid-Induced Casein Gels via Thiol Blocking.

This study systematically investigates how thiol-disulfide interactions influence the structure and mechanical properties of casein gels. Acid gels were prepared from suspensions of micellar casein (MC) powder that were heat-treated at 70 °C. Thiol groups were variably blocked with N-ethylmaleimide (NEM). The gels were characterized using stress-strain measurements, rheological analyses, and confocal microscopy. The stress-strain curves exhibited a biphasic behavior, with an initial linear elastic phase followed by a linear plastic region and a nonlinear failure zone. Compared to control sampl

JectOS® versus PMMA vancomycin-loaded cement: The biomechanical and antimicrobial properties.

PURPOSE: Bone cement is commonly used as a void filler for bone defects. Antibiotics can be added to bone cement to increase local drug delivery in eradicating infection. After antibiotic elution, nonbiodegradable material becomes an undesirable agent. The purpose of this study was to evaluate effects of addition of vancomycin on the compressive strength of injectable synthetic bone substitute, JectOS®. JectOS, a partially biodegradable cement that over time dissolves and is replaced by bone, could be potentially used as a biodegradable antibiotic carrier. METHODS: Vancomycin at various conce

Experimental Studies on Chemical Activation of Cementitious Materials from Smelting Slag of Copper and Nickel Mine.

Gellable composite materials (GCM) were prepared from a smelting slag of copper and nickel deposits and cement, and activated using gypsum and chemical activators. The effects of material ratio, dosage of chemical activators, and gypsum on the mechanical properties of GCM were studied. Our results showed that the chemical activators of Na₂SO₄, Na₂SiO₃, NaOH, and Na₂CO₃ could improve the compressive strength of the GCM. Considering the market cost and ease operation, the compressive strength of the GCM could be significantly improved with 2% Na₂SO₄. The experiment results also showed that the c

Optimization Design of Key Mechanical Properties of Cement-Based Thin Spray-On Liners for Monorail Transport Systems in High-Water-Seepage Areas of Coal Mines.

Thin spray-on liners (TSLs) play a crucial role in the coal mine roadway support. However, the deterioration of their mechanical properties in high-water-seepage environments remains a critical challenge. This study optimizes the key mechanical properties of cement-based TSLs by adjusting the polymer-cement ratio (4-10%) of ethylene-vinyl acetate copolymer (EVA). Experiments employed full water immersion curing to simulate high-water-seepage conditions. The flexural strength, compressive strength, viscosity, and bond strength of EVA emulsion- and powder-modified TSLs under different polymer-ce

Investigating the Influence of Additive Manufacturing and Ultrasonic Coating Parameters on Biopolymeric Scaffold Performance Using Response Surface Methodology.

Triply periodic minimal surface (TPMS) scaffolds have gained attention in additive manufacturing due to their unique porous structures, which are useful in biomedical applications. Unlike metallic implants that can cause stress shielding, polymeric scaffolds offer a safer alternative. This study is focused on enhancing the compressive strength of additive-manufactured polylactic acid (PLA) scaffolds with a diamond structure. The response surface methodology (RSM)-based experimental design was developed to study the influence of printing parameters. The fused deposition modeling (FDM) process p
