Health-related physical fitness management for a child with Tourette syndrome.

Tourette syndrome (TS) is a neurobiological disorder characterized by tics, which are repetitive, stereotypical, involuntary movements and vocalizations. Although the causes of TS are not completely understood, previous studies indicated that many children with TS not only experience comorbid conditions such as a lack of concentration, hyperactivity, impulsive behavior, and obsessive-compulsive symptoms, but also demonstrate poorer motor skills than their peers with typical development. There is limited information on health-related fitness exercises and/or physical therapy for children with T

Stress fracture injury in female endurance athletes in the United Kingdom: A 12-month prospective study.

Studies of stress fracture (SF) incidence are limited in number and geographical location; this study determined the incidence of SF injury in female endurance athletes based in the United Kingdom. A total of 70 athletes aged between 18 and 45 years were recruited and prospectively monitored for 12 months. Questionnaires at baseline and 12 months assessed SF, menstrual and training history, eating psychopathology, and compulsive exercise. Peak lower leg muscle strength was assessed in both legs using an isometric muscle rig. Bone mineral density (BMD) of total body, spine, hip, and radius was

A Review of Motivational Interviewing in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder.

Although cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) is a highly effective treatment for individuals with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), a portion people with OCD do not benefit fully from CBT due to ambivalence about participating in treatment, nonadherence to exposure exercises, and dropout. This paper reviews the promising evidence for motivational interviewing (MI) as a therapeutic approach that is well suited to address these issues and potentially improve treatment outcomes. It will also provide a discussion of MI processes that may enhance CBT for OCD which can foster a collaborative relat

Obsessivecompulsive disorder and traumatic brain injury: behavioral, cognitive, and neuroimaging findings.

OBJECTIVE: The goal of this study was to evaluate behavior and cognition in a consecutive series of patients who developed obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) after suffering a traumatic brain injury (TBI). BACKGROUND: Because OCD is a rare sequelae of TBI, the phenomenology of obsessions and compulsions, the comorbid psychiatric disorders, the performance on cognitive tests, and the neural correlates have not been well characterized. METHODS: Ten adult patients who met DSM-IV diagnostic criteria for OCD after suffering either mild (6 cases), moderate (2 cases), or severe (2 cases) TBI were

Exercise exerts neuroprotective effects on Parkinson's disease model of rats.

Recent studies demonstrate that rehabilitation ameliorates physical and cognitive impairments of patients with stroke, spinal cord injury, and other neurological diseases and that rehabilitation also has potencies to modulate brain plasticity. Here we examined the effects of compulsive exercise on Parkinson's disease model of rats. Before 6-hydroxydopamine (6-OHDA, 20 microg) lesion into the right striatum of female SD rats, bromodeoxyuridine (BrdU) was injected to label the proliferating cells. Subsequently, at 24 h after the lesion, the rats were forced to run on the treadmill (5 days/week,

Exercise and physical therapy help restore body and self in clients with severe anorexia nervosa.

Exercise in the context of anorexia nervosa is a multifaceted endeavour surrounded by controversy and uncertainty. A broader comprehension of this poorly understood phenomenon is required. Informed by the findings of a body examination of six individuals with anorexia nervosa, as well as exercise science, phenomenology and neurocognition, the purpose of this article is to elaborate on the potential role of exercise and physical therapy in the treatment of anorexia nervosa. The findings of the body assessment include constriction of posture, muscles and pattern of breathing. These bodily restra

Behavioral addictions: an overview.

The legitimacy of nonsubstance addictions has received increased attention from clinicians, researchers and the general population as more and more individuals report symptoms consistent with impairment of impulse control. The clinical presentation of these disorders is varied, as compulsive activities may include: gambling, eating, sex, shopping, use of the Internet or videogames or even exercising, working or falling in love. As such, there is great controversy in diagnosing, treating or even naming these conditions, as many of these behaviors are daily rituals instrumental to our ultimate s

Psychological and behavioral differences among females classified as bulimic, obligatory exerciser and normal control.

The compulsion to maintain a lean body shape while living in a society obsessed with food may encourage the use of dieting, binge eating and purging behaviors in young women. The body of literature on bulimia nervosa (Boskind-Lodahl and Sirlin 1977; Fairburn and Cooper 1984; Katzman and Wolchik 1984; Scott 1988) clearly establishes its relationship to the current American fashion for thinness and the value placed on physical attractiveness for self-esteem. This notion promotes a multitude of weight control strategies ranging from self-starvation (Humphrey 1983; Brownell and Foreyth 1986) to ci

The Freiburg sport therapy program for eating disordered outpatients: a pilot study.

PURPOSE: Many patients with anorexia or bulimia nervosa use physical activity as a method to influence weight and shape and/or exercise in a compulsive manner. This form of exercising is associated with a more severe illness and higher relapse rates. In a proof-of-concept study, effects of a newly developed sport therapy program aiming to reduce unhealthy exercising were assessed. METHODS: Thirty-six patients with eating disorders took part in four group terms of the program, each lasting 3 months. They were compared to a matched control group. Main outcome criterion was a reduction in the to

Self-esteem mediates the relationship between psychological distress and exercise addiction in Italian adults: a cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Regular physical activity yields both physical and mental benefits. However, excessive and compulsive exercise can lead to maladaptive behaviours known as exercise addiction (EA). This condition has been studied in over 1,000 published empirical articles, yet it still lacks official clinical diagnostic criteria. AIMS: Exercise addiction is linked to psychological distress and has complex relationships with self-esteem, being both positively and negatively associated. Nevertheless, the role of self-esteem in the connection between psychological distress and EA remains unclear. MET

Problem Gambling in the Fitness World-A General Population Web Survey.

The world of sports has a complex association to problem gambling, and the sparse research examining problem gambling in athletes has suggested an increased prevalence and particularly high male predominance. The present study aimed to study frequency and correlates of problem gambling in populations with moderate to high involvement in fitness or physical exercise. This is a self-selective online survey focusing on addictive behaviors in physical exercise distributed by 'fitness influencers' on social media and other online fitness forums to their followers. Respondents were included if they

Understanding Orthorexia Nervosa: A Systematic Review of Meta-analytical Findings.

UNLABELLED: Orthorexia Nervosa (ON) is an emerging condition marked by an obsessive focus on healthy eating, often resulting in impairments in well-being, daily functioning, and quality of life. Despite growing awareness, ON is not currently recognized in major psychiatric diagnostic systems, complicating its identification and clinical management. OBJECTIVE: This umbrella review aims to synthesize evidence from existing meta-analyses on the prevalence and associated factors of ON, while critically assessing the quality of the current literature. METHODS: A comprehensive review of five meta-

From social media to body image distress: Problematic internet use, exercise addiction, and enhancement drugs use across countries.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Social media increasingly shapes body image by promoting often unattainable beauty ideals. Concurrently, targeted online marketing of image- and performance-enhancing drugs (IPEDs) exploits these vulnerabilities, intensifying anxiety and fostering maladaptive behaviours such as problematic usage of the internet (PUI), compulsive exercise, and IPEDs consumption. This study explores these behaviours across nine countries and examines how PUI, excessive exercise, and IPEDs use predict appearance anxiety, aiming to inform targeted prevention strategies for at-risk populations.

A comparison of eating, exercise, shape, and weight related symptomatology in males with muscle dysmorphia and anorexia nervosa.

In the context of the lack of nosological clarity surrounding muscle dysmorphia, this paper aims to compare the symptomatic profile of muscle dysmorphia and anorexia nervosa in males whilst using measures sensitive to indexing male body image concerns. Twenty-one male muscle dysmorphia patients, 24 male anorexia nervosa patients, and 15 male gym-using controls completed the Eating Disorder Examination-Questionnaire, the Muscle Dysmorphia Disorder Inventory, the Compulsive Exercise Test, and a measure of appearance-enhancing substance use. Men with muscle dysmorphia and anorexia nervosa demonst

Intervention of Collective Exercise on the Mental Health of Elderly Hypertensive Patients.

BACKGROUND: Anxiety, depression, and other adverse psychological reactions are often observed in elderly hypertensive patients. Appropriate exercise is a safe form of adjuvant therapy without causing side effects among these patients, with consistent effects on patients' mental health. In this study, a collective exercise intervention experiment was conducted to evaluate the mental health of elderly hypertensive patients and to verify the effect of the psychological intervention of collective exercise. METHOD: A total of 115 elderly hypertensive patients aged 60-70 years old were selected as

Long-Term Potentiation and Neurotransmitter Expression Change in Dysautonomia Linked to Binge Eating Disorder: Protective Role of Exercise.

The autonomic nervous system (ANS) regulates internal organ function to maintain homeostasis. Dysautonomias are ANS disorders involving reduced or excessive sympathetic or parasympathetic activity and can be associated with metabolic syndrome and eating disorders such as binge eating disorder (BED). The ANS exhibits synaptic plasticity phenomena, including long-term potentiation (LTP) and neurotransmitter expression changes, which may influence autonomic function. BED is defined as recurrent, compulsive intake of large amounts of high-calorie food in a short time. Here, we examined dysautonomi
