Comparison of peripheral quantitative computed tomography forearm bone density versus DXA in rheumatoid arthritis patients and controls.

UNLABELLED: Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) has been associated with osteoporosis. Quantitative computed tomography (QCT) is capable of assessing bone density and composition. We found lower bone density in RA compared to controls. Age and RA duration influenced bone density. QCT may be useful to assess bone metabolism in RA. INTRODUCTION: RA is associated with generalized and periarticular osteoporosis. In addition to DXA that determines areal bone mineral density (BMD), peripheral QCT also detects volumetric BMD. QCT differentiates between total, trabecular, and cortical BMD. Here, we compared DX

Peripheral Quantitative Computed Tomography Predicts Humeral Diaphysis Torsional Mechanical Properties With Good Short-Term Precision.

Peripheral quantitative computed tomography (pQCT) is a popular tool for noninvasively estimating bone mechanical properties. Previous studies have demonstrated that pQCT provides precise estimates that are good predictors of actual bone mechanical properties at popular distal imaging sites (tibia and radius). The predictive ability and precision of pQCT at more proximal sites remain unknown. The aim of the present study was to explore the predictive ability and short-term precision of pQCT estimates of mechanical properties of the midshaft humerus, a site gaining popularity for exploring the

Computed tomography characteristics of coronary artery atherosclerosis in subjects with lower extremity peripheral artery disease and no cardiac symptoms.

INTRODUCTION: Computed tomography coronary angiography (CTCA) enables noninvasive evaluation of coronary artery atherosclerosis. However, its value to assess coronary artery disease (CAD) in subjects with lower‑extremity peripheral artery disease (PAD) and no cardiac symptoms is unknown. Moreover, the relationship between coronary artery plaque characteristics and severity of peripheral atherosclerosis in this group of patients was not sufficiently elucidated. OBJECTIVES: The aim of the study was to determine the value of CTCA to assess coronary artery atherosclerosis and to evaluate the rela

A longitudinal study of remodeling in a revised peripheral artery bypass graft using 3D ultrasound imaging and computational hemodynamics.

We report a study of the role of hemodynamic shear stress in the remodeling and failure of a peripheral artery bypass graft. Three separate scans of a femoral to popliteal above-knee bypass graft were taken over the course of a 16 month period following a revision of the graft. The morphology of the lumen is reconstructed from data obtained by a custom 3D ultrasound system. Numerical simulations are performed with the patient-specific geometries and physiologically realistic flow rates. The ultrasound reconstructions reveal two significant areas of remodeling: a stenosis with over 85% reductio

Comparison of peripheral and portal routes of insulin infusion by a computer-controlled insulin infusion system (artificial endocrine pancreas).

This study was undertaken to determine the different consequences of portal and peripheral routes of insulin administration by the artificial endocrine pancreas. Intraportal glucose was infused (10 mg./min./kg. for 60 minutes) in anesthetized normal and pancreatectomized dogs while blood glucose concentrations were monitored continuously. During computer-controlled insulin administration normal glucose tolerance was restored by both portal and peripheral routes of insulin delivery. There were also no significant differences in (1) glycemic patterns, (2) insulin infusion patterns, (3) periphera

Discriminating bronchiolar adenoma from peripheral lung cancer by thin-section computed tomography (CT): a 2-center study.

BACKGROUND: Bronchiolar adenoma (BA) is frequently misdiagnosed as peripheral lung cancer (PLC) because it resembles PLC. Computed tomography (CT) examination is an effective tool for detecting and diagnosing lung diseases. To date, there has been no comprehensive study on the differential diagnosis of BAs and PLCs using thin-section computed tomography (TSCT) based on a large sample, and the efficiency of CT in diagnosing BAs has not been verified. The goal of this study was to distinguish BA from PLC by summarizing their clinical and TSCT characteristics. METHODS: A retrospective cross-sect

Feasibility and safety of computed tomography-guided intrapulmonary injection of indocyanine green for localization of peripheral pulmonary ground-glass nodules.

BACKGROUND: The early surgical intervention for pulmonary ground-glass nodules (GGNs) has become increasingly important, but accurate identification of these nodules during thoracoscopic surgery poses challenges due to the need for sublobar resections and reliance on visual and tactile perception alone. The prognosis of the procedure is closely tied to the use of precise positioning technology. Thus, it is crucial to develop an accurate positioning technology that can improve patient prognosis. METHODS: Clinical data from the cardiothoracic department of a tertiary hospital in Shanghai were c

Brain-computer interface relieves chronic chemotherapy-induced peripheral neuropathy: A randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Chemotherapy-induced peripheral neuropathy (CIPN) includes negative sensations that remain a major chronic problem for cancer survivors. Previous research demonstrated that neurofeedback (a closed-loop brain-computer interface [BCI]) was effective at treating CIPN versus a waitlist control (WLC). The authors' a priori hypothesis was that BCI would be superior to placebo feedback (placebo control [PLC]) and to WLC in alleviating CIPN and that changes in brain activity would predict symptom report. METHODS: Randomization to one of three conditions occurred between November 2014 and

Electrode Spacing and Current Distribution in Electrical Stimulation of Peripheral Nerve: A Computational Modeling Study using Realistic Nerve Models.

Electrical stimulation of peripheral nerves has long been used and proven effective in restoring function caused by disease or injury. Accurate placement of electrodes is often critical to properly excite the nerve and yield the desired outcome. Computational modeling is becoming an important tool that can guide the rapid development and optimization of such implantable neural stimulation devices. Here, we developed a heterogeneous very high-resolution computational model of a realistic peripheral nerve stimulated by a current source through cuff electrodes. We then calculated the current dist

The effects of volar locking plates for distal radius fractures on the image quality of high-resolution peripheral quantitative computed tomography.

INTRODUCTION: High-resolution peripheral quantitative computed tomography (HR-pQCT) has enabled us to observe changes of bone microstructure during fracture healing. However, a method of analyzing the healing process after osteosynthesis has yet to be established due to implant artifacts. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of volar locking plates for distal radius fractures on the image quality of HR-pQCT. METHODS: Four different types of plates for distal radius fractures were evaluated. The scan region of HR-pQCT was the center of each plate, not including the screw in

Cone beam computed tomography-guided thin/ultrathin bronchoscopy for diagnosis of peripheral lung nodules: a prospective pilot study.

BACKGROUND: Despite advances in bronchoscopy, its diagnostic yield for peripheral lung lesions continues to be suboptimal. Cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) could be utilized to corroborate the accuracy of our bronchoscopic navigation and hopefully increase its diagnostic yield. However, data on radiation exposure and feasibility of CBCT-guided bronchoscopy is scarce. METHODS: Prospective pilot study of bronchoscopy for peripheral lung nodules under general anesthesia with thin/ultrathin bronchoscope, radial-probe endobronchial ultrasound (RP-EBUS), and CBCT.
