Opioid-related Transitions for Chronic Pain Management: A Concept Analysis.

BACKGROUND: People who are prescribed opioids for pain management may undergo transitions of care. However, little is known about transitions of care that involve a prescribed opioid, which may have significant consequences for people with chronic pain. The purpose of this concept analysis was to define opioid-related transitions (OrTs) and characterize their attributes, antecedents, and consequences. METHODS: Rodger's evolutionary method for concept analysis was used to identify key attributes, antecedents, and consequences of OrTs. A comprehensive literature search was conducted in Septembe

Seeking the Category: The Pragmatic Function of Formal Explanations and the Role of Cognitive Reflection.

Formal explanations are statements that explain properties of an object by referring to its category. This study investigates the role of pragmatics in the evaluation of formal explanations. Across six experiments, we examined how a questioner's knowledge of category identity and an explanation's capability to specify a category affect satisfaction with such explanations. Experiments 1a and 1b demonstrate that participants find formal explanations less satisfactory when the questioner is already aware of the category identity. Experiments 2a and 2b show that participants assumed a questioner w

Symptom Burden: A Concept Analysis.

Lack of conceptual clarity about symptom burden causes urinary incontinence to remain undertreated. We conducted a concept analysis using Rodgers' evolutionary method. A database and gray literature search were performed. Eight records were included. Attributes include genitourinary symptoms, psychological morbidity, and a negative sense of self. Antecedents are disruption to the pelvic floor, knowledge and perception, healthcare access and utilization, and patient and clinician-led interventions. Consequences are reduced quality of life, undesirable lifestyle modifications, stigma, and financ

Category selectivity as a window into behavioral relevance.

Ritchie et al. (this issue) argue that a deeper understanding of occipitotemporal cortex (OTC) requires shifting emphasis from category selectivity to behavioral relevance. They suggest that focusing on categories such as faces, bodies, or scenes is too narrow and overlooks how OTC supports flexible, goal-directed behavior. We agree that linking neural representations to behavior is essential but caution against treating category selectivity and behavioral relevance as opposing views. Category selectivity provides valuable insight into how cortical representations are organized to support beha

Young women's engagement with gambling: A critical qualitative inquiry of risk conceptualisations and motivations to gamble.

BACKGROUND: Younger women's engagement with gambling has changed over recent decades due to a range of socio-cultural, environmental and commercial factors. However, younger women's distinct lived experiences with gambling have rarely been considered. The following critical qualitative inquiry explored factors that influenced younger women's engagement with gambling and their perceptions of gambling risks. METHODS: Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 41 Australian women aged 18-40 years. Participants were asked questions relating to their reasons for gambling, and the perceived ris

At the Heart of It All: Emotions of Consequence for the Conceptualization of Caregiver-Reported Outcomes in the Context of Colorectal Cancer.

Colorectal cancer (CRC) can be demanding for primary caregivers; yet, there is insufficient evidence describing the caregiver-reported outcomes (CROs) that matter most to caregivers. CROs refer to caregivers' assessments of their own health status as a result of supporting a patient. The study purpose was to describe the emotions that were most impactful to caregivers of patients with CRC, and how the importance caregivers attribute to these emotions changed from diagnosis throughout treatment. Guided by qualitative Interpretive Description, we analyzed 25 caregiver and 37 CRC patient intervie

What are the essential ingredients of a CBT case conceptualization for voices and delusions in schizophrenia spectrum disorders? A study of expert consensus.

Evidence supports the use of cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) for the treatment of patients with schizophrenia spectrum disorders. A case conceptualization (CC) (or case formulation) is seen as the keystone of CBT in terms of making sense of a patient's difficulties, to guide and inform such treatment. Despite the importance placed on CC there is no known consensus amongst experts as to the essential ingredients involved in this fundamental process. This study used the Delphi method to establish expert consensus for the essential components of a CC when working to treat auditory hallucinati

Neurocognitive factors in sensory restoration of early deafness: a connectome model.

Progress in biomedical technology (cochlear, vestibular, and retinal implants) has led to remarkable success in neurosensory restoration, particularly in the auditory system. However, outcomes vary considerably, even after accounting for comorbidity-for example, after cochlear implantation, some deaf children develop spoken language skills approaching those of their hearing peers, whereas other children fail to do so. Here, we review evidence that auditory deprivation has widespread effects on brain development, affecting the capacity to process information beyond the auditory system. After se

Unpacking unpacking: greater detail can reduce perceived likelihood.

Past research suggests that a categorical event is perceived to be more likely if its subcases are explicitly delineated or "unpacked." In 6 studies, we find that unpacking can often make an event seem less likely, especially when the details being unpacked are already highly accessible. Process evidence shows that the provision of greater detail accompanying unpacking reduces the simplicity of an event and that this dysfluency is used as a negative cue for likelihood. This work establishes processing fluency as a mechanism that opposes the other effects of unpacking, such as enhanced accessib

The construction system of the brain.

The ability to construct a hypothetical situation in one's imagination prior to it actually occurring may afford greater accuracy in predicting its eventual outcome. The recollection of past experiences is also considered to be a reconstructive process with memories recreated from their component parts. Construction, therefore, plays a critical role in allowing us to plan for the future and remember the past. Conceptually, construction can be broken down into a number of constituent processes although little is known about their neural correlates. Moreover, it has been suggested that some of t

Aging is not senescence: a short computer demonstration and implications for medical practice.

INTRODUCTION: The discussion regarding the evolution of aging is almost as old as Darwinian Evolution Theory, but to date, it has remained one of biology's unresolved problems. One issue is how to reconcile natural selection, which is understood as a process that purges deleterious characteristics, with senescence, which seems to offer no advantages to the individual. METHOD: A computer simulation that illustrates an evolutionary mechanism for the development of senescence in populations is presented. DISCUSSION: In this article, we debate that two popular explanations for the existence of s

The origins of causal perception: evidence from postdictive processing in infancy.

The currency of our visual experience consists not only of visual features such as color and motion, but also seemingly higher-level features such as causality--as when we see two billiard balls collide, with one causing the other to move. One of the most important and controversial questions about causal perception involves its origin: do we learn to see causality, or does this ability derive in part from innately specified aspects of our cognitive architecture? Such questions are difficult to answer, but can be indirectly addressed via experiments with infants. Here we explore causal percept

Language, embodiment, and the cognitive niche.

Embodied agents use bodily actions and environmental interventions to make the world a better place to think in. Where does language fit into this emerging picture of the embodied, ecologically efficient agent? One useful way to approach this question is to consider language itself as a cognition-enhancing animal-built structure. To take this perspective is to view language as a kind of self-constructed cognitive niche: a persisting but never stationary material scaffolding whose crucial role in promoting thought and reason remains surprisingly poorly understood. It is the very materiality of

Affectedness and direct objects: the role of lexical semantics in the acquisition of verb argument structure.

How do speakers predict the syntax of a verb from its meaning? Traditional theories posit that syntactically relevant information about semantic arguments consists of a list of thematic roles like "agent", "theme", and "goal", which are linked onto a hierarchy of grammatical positions like subject, object and oblique object. For verbs involving motion, the entity caused to move is defined as the "theme" or "patient" and linked to the object. However, this fails for many common verbs, as in fill water into the glass and cover a sheet onto the bed. In more recent theories verbs' meanings are mul

Understanding maps as symbols: the development of map concepts in children.

We expect that many readers encountered this article with the beliefs that maps are highly specialized devices primarily used for wayfinding; that they represent the spatial world in a single, correct form; that they are readily transparent; and that their sole contribution to psychology is their role in externalizing environmental cognition. By discussing the myriad functions and forms of maps, by highlighting their symbolic nature, and by considering some of the misconceptions about maps, we have attempted to demonstrate the value of maps for addressing a wide range of developmental question

The effects of an interactive instructional strategy for enhancing reading comprehension and content area learning for students with learning disabilities.

This study investigated the effectiveness of an interactive vocabulary instructional strategy, semantic-feature analysis (SFA), on the content area text comprehension of adolescents with learning disabilities. Prior to reading a social studies text, students in resource classes either completed a relationship chart as part of the SFA condition or used the dictionary to write definitions and sentences as part of the contrast condition. Passage comprehension was measured on a multiple-choice test consisting of two types of items, vocabulary and conceptual. Comprehension was measured immediately

Nurses' Career Progression and Career Success: A Scoping Review of Conceptualisation and Associated Workforce Conditions.

BACKGROUND: Conceptual inconsistency exists in nursing literature, with career progression, career advancement, career success, professional development and career fulfilment defined and applied in varying ways. This ambiguity blurs important distinctions and limits the comparison and interpretation of findings. This scoping review mapped how career progression and career success have been conceptualised and measured and synthesised the organisational and workforce factors reported in relation to these outcomes. METHODS: We conducted a scoping review using the Arksey and O'Malley framework. P

A Walker and Avant concept analysis of slow code practice in end-of-life resuscitation.

BACKGROUND: The slow code is a complex and ethically sensitive phenomenon in cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), referring to a deliberately partial or delayed resuscitation attempt in patients with poor prognosis or terminal conditions. Although it is recognized in clinical practice, the concept remains ambiguous and ethically controversial. Clarifying its defining attributes, antecedents, and consequences is essential for ensuring ethical and responsible end-of-life decision-making in healthcare. METHODS: This study applied Walker and Avant's (2019) concept analysis method to clarify the c

Conceptual Understanding and Conceptual Change Through Human AI Collaboration in Science Education: An Integrated Conceptual Framework from a Systematic Literature Review.

Human Artificial Intelligence (Human AI) Collaboration in science education is gaining momentum and more research is required on how it can facilitate students' conceptual understanding and conceptual change. Currently, most studies on AI in science education investigate the use of one particular tool and its effects on learning. However, it is the learning mechanisms that are triggered by these tools that help develop knowledge. This systematic literature review was conducted by performing a systematic search within the Scopus database which was last updated on 15 June 2026. In line with the
