Concurrent Cardio-Cerebral Infarctions in COVID-19: A Systematic Review of Published Case Reports/Series.

Twelve CCI patients were studied with confirmed or suspected COVID-19 infection. The majority of these patients were males (83.3%) with a median age of 55 years from three geographical locations, constituting the Middle East (7), Spain (3), and the USA (1). In 6 patients, IgG/IgM was positive for COVID-19, 4 with high pretest probability and 2 with positive RT-PCR. Type 2 DM, hyperlipidemia, and smoking were the primary risk factors. Right-sided neurological impairments and verbal impairment were the most common symptoms. Our analysis found 8 (66%) synchronous occurrences. In 58.3% of cases, n

Concurrent criterion-related validity of physical examination tests for hip labral lesions: a systematic review.

Hip injuries are prevalent, especially within the athletic population. Of the hip injuries in this population, some 18-55% are lesions to the labrum of the hip. Clinical diagnosis of hip labral lesions is difficult because data on prevalence are varied. In addition, data on the prevalence of internal and external risk factors are absent as are data on the correlation of these risk factors with labral lesions, making it difficult to gauge the diagnostic utility. The mechanism of injury is often unknown or not specific to labral lesions. Internal risk factors may remain hidden to physical therap

Pathologic myopia as a concurrent condition in Pierre Robin sequence: a case report and literature review.

INTRODUCTION: Pierre Robin sequence (PRS) is a rare congenital disorder often associated with multisystem abnormalities, yet cases combined with pathologic myopia and medial upper eyelid entropion with trichiasis in whom no pathogenic genetic variants are detectable are rare. CASE PRESENTATION: This article reports on a 4-year-old male child with syndromic PRS, whose parents verbally stated that no pathogenic variants were identified in previous genetic testing. Since birth, he has undergone multiple surgeries for micrognathia, cleft palate, and secretory otitis media. He presented for ophtha

A Case of Lung Adenocarcinoma With Concurrent EGFR Mutation and ALK Fusion Combined With Literature Review.

This case underscores the critical importance of retesting for resistant mechanisms, such as EML4-ALK fusion, in patients with EGFR-mutant lung adenocarcinoma who experience rapid progression on EGFR-tyrosine kinase inhibitor (TKI) therapy. Early identification of such co-alterations and an immediate switch to alectinib can lead to rapid and sustained clinical improvement.

Invasive Gastric Candidiasis With Concurrent Clostridioides difficile Colitis: A Case Report and Review of the Literature.

Invasive gastric candidiasis is a rare fungal infection of the stomach, often arising in the setting of immunosuppression, critical illness, mucosal barrier disruption, gut microbial alterations, or antibiotic use. Though Candida spp. are normal flora within the gastrointestinal tract, compromised host defenses can contribute to overgrowth and invasion of the fungal species into deeper tissues. We report a case of an 89-year-old man presenting with concurrent upper gastrointestinal bleeding from diffuse gastric ulcers secondary to invasive gastric candidiasis and diarrhea resulting from Clostr

Concurrent Diagnosis of Superficial Esophageal Cancer and Esophageal Achalasia: A Case Report and Literature Review.

We report a case of a 70-year-old woman with esophageal achalasia and concurrent superficial esophageal squamous cell carcinoma. Three adjacent superficial lesions were resected en bloc by endoscopic submucosal dissection (ESD), with no lymphovascular invasion. Given that the patient's dysphagia was effectively controlled with medication and dietary modifications, peroral endoscopic myotomy (POEM) was deferred following a careful assessment of the risk-benefit balance. As both ESD and POEM involve submucosal intervention, this case highlights the importance of individualized treatment based on

Concurrent avulsion of posterior cruciate ligament and semimembranosus: a case-based discussion and literature review.

A 30-year-old male sustained a road traffic accident and presented to our trauma centre with injuries to his pelvis and right knee. Radiology showed closed fractures of the right posterior wall and posterior column of the acetabulum and PCL bony avulsion with posteromedial tibial plateau osteochondral fracture, without any distal neurovascular deficit. He was managed with surgical intervention for both injuries. His hip and knee healed well with a good functional range of motion at 12 months of follow-up. The aim of highlighting this case is that it underscores the rarity of concurrent PCL and

Newborn concurrent hearing and genetic screening for hearing impairment: A systematic review and meta‑analysis.

Hearing loss is the most prevalent neurosensory disorder in humans, with significant implications for language, social and cognitive development if not diagnosed and treated early. The present systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to determine the rate of hearing screening pass and genetic screening failure [universal newborn hearing screening (UNHS) pass/genetic failure] and to investigate the advantages of combining newborn hearing and genetic screening for newborn hearing impairment. The PubMed, Embase and Cochrane databases were searched from inception to September 2023 to identify stu

Delirium with Concurrent Use of Lithium and ECT and the Safety Implications: Case Reports and Review of the Literature.

Using electroconvulsive treatment and lithium together to treat acute manic episodes is common, but the effects of combining these therapies vary according to the literature. Some studies have found severe adverse side effects, while others have found the combination of both medications safe and helpful. To investigate potential adverse side effects, this study reports on two cases where bipolar affective disorder patients developed delirium after receiving electroconvulsive therapy and lithium concurrently. The delirium was attributed only to the combined administration of these medicines aft

Concurrence of immune thrombocytopenic purpura and thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura: a case report and review of the literature.

BACKGROUND: Immune thrombocytopenic purpura and thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura are both causes of thrombocytopenia. Recognizing thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura is crucial for subsequent treatment and prognosis. In clinical practice, corticosteroids and rituximab can be used to treat both immune thrombocytopenic purpura and thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura; plasma exchange therapy is the first-line treatment in thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura, while corticosteroids are strongly recommended as first-line treatment in immune thrombocytopenic purpura. The differential diagnosis of

Possible modulation of concurrent Parkinson's disease in the management of metastatic GIST: a review of two cases.

Imatinib, a tyrosine kinase inhibitor, is the mainstay of treatment for resected high-risk (adjuvant and metastatic) gastrointestinal stromal tumour (GIST) - a rare form of sarcoma. There has been recent research into the neuroprotective role and modulation of dopaminergic neurones by imatinib through the abl pathway in Parkinson's disease (PD). We describe two patients from a single cancer centre with concurrent diagnoses of PD and metastatic GIST receiving imatinib and standard PD management. The cases highlight a potential reduction in PD progression using Unified Parkinson's Disease Rating

Concurrence of rheumatoid arthritis and calcium pyrophosphate deposition disease: A case collection and review of the literature.

OBJECTIVE: Calcium pyrophosphate deposition disease (CPDD) is arthritis caused by calcium pyrophosphate (CPP) crystal deposition in joints. It is commonly associated with aging as well as a handful of metabolic syndromes. Recent epidemiologic studies suggest a positive association of CPDD and rheumatoid arthritis (RA). Yet how these diseases are related remains unclear. We set out to describe 21 well-characterized patients with both diagnoses. METHODS: Medical records of patients with both RA and CPDD identified at a single academic practice site were reviewed for age, gender, age of CPDD and

Concurrency of Guillain-Barre syndrome and acute transverse myelitis: a case report and review of literature.

Guillain-Barré syndrome and acute transverse myelitis manifest as demyelinating diseases of the peripheral and central nervous system. Concurrency of these two disorders is rarely documented in literature. A 4-year-old girl presenting with cough, fever, and an impaired walking ability was admitted to hospital. She had no previous complaints in her medical history. A physical examination revealed lack of muscle strength of the lower extremities and deep tendon reflexes. MRI could not be carried out due to technical problems; therefore, both Guillain-Barré syndrome and acute transverse myelitis

Effects of Concurrent Calcium Channel Blocker on Antiplatelet Efficacy of Clopidogrel Therapy: A Systematic Review.

Clopidogrel is a widely used drug in clinical practice. Controversy persists as to whether it interacts with proton pump inhibitors. Recently, research interest has grown in the area concerning an interaction of clopidogrel with calcium channel blockers. Multiple studies have been conducted to evaluate the effect of calcium channel blockers on the efficacy of clopidogrel, both in vitro and in vivo. The authors aim to present a systematic review of the published studies in the literature. Various terms were searched in PubMed, Web of Science, and The Cochrane database. Abstracts of studies were

Central and ulnar cleft hands: a review of concurrent deformities in a series of 47 patients and their pathogenesis.

Two main types of cleft hands have been described. The ulnar cleft hand deformity is very rare and is characterized by two constant features: a deep cleft radial to the little finger and hypoplasia of the ulnar digits. The pathogenesis of ulnar clefts is unknown. The second type is the central cleft hand deformity, which is characterized by a soft tissue/bone defect in the hand centrally. Patients with central clefts also have several concurrent deformities in the remaining digits. This paper reviews the clinical features of three cases with ulnar cleft hands and 44 cases of central cleft hand

Duodenogastric intussusception with concurrent gastric foreign body in a dog: a case report and literature review.

A 3 yr old spayed female boxer weighing 22.8 kg was presented for severe, acute vomiting and tenesmus. Tachycardia, tachypnea, dehydration, and abdominal pain were present on physical examination. Abdominal radiographs showed a foreign object (golf ball) in the fundus of the stomach, and a larger, round, soft-tissue opacity mass in the region of the pylorus. Endoscopic removal of the foreign object was unsuccessful. A large soft-tissue mass (duodenogastric intussusception) was visualized with endoscopy, but was not correctly diagnosed until surgery. A midline exploratory celiotomy was performe

Multiple concurrent anastomotic procedures in the management of moyamoya disease: a case report with review of literature.

It has already been proved by many studies that surgical revascularization definitely helps in curing the symptoms of moyamoya vasculopathy. In this regard, we present a case of moyamoya disease which was cured by concurrent multiple anastomotic procedures, namely superficial temporal artery (STA), middle cerebral artery (MCA) anastomosis, encephalomyosynangiosis (EMS) and encephalogaleosynangiosis (EGS). A 24-year-old woman presented with symptoms of cerebral ischemia. Thorough investigation with MRA and MRI revealed moyamoya vasculopathy and was confirmed by cerebral angiogram. Multiple conc

Concurrent development of Crohn disease and myelodysplastic syndrome in a child: case report and literature review.

A small number of cases of Crohn disease associated with myelodysplastic syndromes or leukemia have been reported in adults in the last 25 years in the English-language medical literature. The authors report a case of a 9-year-old boy who developed Crohn disease and myelodysplastic syndrome concurrently. Analysis of his bone marrow showed a chromosome 20 abnormality. Although chromosome 20 abnormalities have been reported in a minority of these patients, the significance of this association remains unclear at the present time.
