Morphologic examination of the temporal bone by cone beam computed tomography: comparison with multislice helical computed tomography.

INTRODUCTION: High-resolution CT imaging is essential to diagnosis and follow-up of temporal bone pathology. Morphologically, CT is the reference examination. The requirement of long-term follow-up thus exposes patients to cumulative radiation doses. Limiting exposure to ionizing radiation is an increasing concern of public health authorities. The principal advantage of Cone Beam CT (CBCT) lies in a significant reduction in radiation dose. The main objective of the present study was to assess the morphologic concordance between CBCT and Multislice Helical Computed Tomography (MSCT) on 20 anato

Revised consensus guidelines for the use of cone-beam computed tomography/ digital volume tomography.

Cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) is established in dentistry for about 20 years. Technique evolved and indications clarified since then and since the Swiss consensus guidelines regarding CBCT were published in 2014 and 2015. Therefore, the Swiss association of dentomaxillofacial radiology decided to initiate the process of updating these guidelines by forming a consensus group divided into a core group responsible for the whole process and an approval group responsible for specific clinical matters. The manuscript outlines the revised guidelines in a practical way and is divided along the

The Applications and Pitfalls of Cone-Beam Computed Tomography-Based Synthetic Computed Tomography for Adaptive Evaluation in Pencil-Beam Scanning Proton Therapy.

PURPOSE: The study evaluates the efficacy of cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT)-based synthetic CTs (sCT) as a potential alternative to verification CT (vCT) for enhanced treatment monitoring and early adaptation in proton therapy. METHODS: Seven common treatment sites were studied. Two sets of sCT per case were generated: direct-deformed (DD) sCT and image-correction (IC) sCT. The image qualities and dosimetric impact of the sCT were compared to the same-day vCT. RESULTS: The sCT agreed with vCT in regions of homogeneous tissues such as the brain and breast; however, notable discrepancies

Cone Beam Computed Tomography Image-Quality Improvement Using "One-Shot" Super-resolution.

Cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) images are convenient representations for obtaining information about patients' internal organs, but their lower image quality than those of treatment planning CT images constitutes an important shortcoming. Several proposed CBCT image-quality improvement methods based on deep learning require large amounts of training data. Our newly developed model using a super-resolution method, "one-shot" super-resolution (OSSR) based on the "zero-shot" super-resolution method, requires only small amounts of training data to improve CBCT image quality using only the ta

Automatic localization of cochlear implant electrodes using cone beam computed tomography images.

BACKGROUND: Cochlear implants (CI) are implantable medical devices that enable the perception of sounds and the understanding of speech by electrically stimulating the auditory nerve in case of inner ear damage. The stimulation takes place via an array of electrodes surgically inserted in the cochlea. After CI implantation, cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) is used to evaluate the position of the electrodes. Moreover, CBCT is used in research studies to investigate the relationship between the position of the electrodes and the hearing outcome of CI user. In clinical routine, the estimation

OPTIMISING THE PARAMETERS OF COCHLEAR IMPLANT IMAGING WITH CONE-BEAM COMPUTED TOMOGRAPHY.

With computed tomography (CT), the delicate structures of the inner ear may be hard to visualise, which a cochlear implant (CI) electrode array can further complicate. The usefulness of a novel cone-beam CT device in CI recipient's inner ear imaging was evaluated and the exposure parameters were optimised to attain adequate clinical image quality at the lowest effective dose (ED). Six temporal bones were implanted with a Cochlear Slim Straight electrode array and imaged with six different imaging protocols. Contrast-to-noise ratio was calculated for each imaging protocol, and three observers e

The Three-Dimensional Evaluation of Radicular Cyst by Cone-Beam Computed Tomography.

A radicular cyst is the most typical odontogenic cyst affecting the human jaws. A radicular cyst is frequently asymptomatic and is discovered accidentally during a radiological procedure. Radicular cyst most commonly occurs during the third and fourth decades of life. The patient affected by a radicular cyst usually gives a history of trauma, and they may even not be aware of the occurrence of the traumatic episode. Such a case of a Radicular cyst that occurred in a 22-year-old-young female who did not follow up further for root canal treatment was radiographically evaluated in three-dimension

Bilateral Inverted Mesiodens: A Rare Case Evaluated by Cone-Beam Computed Tomography.

Mesiodens is the most commonly occurring supernumerary tooth between the two maxillary central incisors. Mesiodens can be inverted, impacted, or placed buccally or palatally between the two maxillary central incisors. It mostly occurs unilaterally and rarely occurs bilaterally. We describe a rare occurrence of such a bilateral inverted mesiodens extended near the anterior nasal spine, evaluated by cone-beam computed tomography.
