Conidiobolomycosis is a deep, rare mycosis, due to Conidiobolus coronatus which is a saprophyte of vegetation in decomposition. We report one case in Burkina Faso. A 17 years old man, shepherd, consulted for tumefactions on the face. It could date back insidiously to a traumatism, one year before. A month later some painless tumefactions appeared on the cheekbone, the right eyelid, the nose with epistaxis. The upper lip then the lower one had swollen. Dermatological exam revealed multiple, painless, hard, sub-cutaneous swellings, affecting the cheekbone, the eyelids, the root and the ala of th

A case of zygomycosis caused by Rhizopus oryzae in a diabetic patient previously misdiagnosed as invasive pulmonary aspergillosis and an overview of the disease in India are presented. The case was diagnosed by direct microscopy, histopathologic examination and culture. Following surgical resection of pulmonary cavity under cover of amphotericin B administration, the patient recovered completely. Of 461 cases reported to-date, approximately 70% had been diagnosed at the Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education and Research, Chandigarh, in north India. This may be attributed to better awaren

In recent years, we have seen an increase in the number of immunocompromised cohorts as a result of infections and/or medical conditions, which has resulted in an increased incidence of fungal infections. Although rare, the incidence of infections caused by fungi belonging to basal fungal lineages is also continuously increasing. Basal fungal lineages diverged at an early point during the evolution of the fungal lineage, in which, in a simplified four-phylum fungal kingdom, Zygomycota and Chytridiomycota belong to the basal fungi, distinguishing them from Ascomycota and Basidiomycota. Entomopthoromycosis is a rare subcutaneous fungal infection caused by onidiobolus coronatus affecting mainly the upper respiratory mucosa in immunocompetent people. The manifestations of this disease masquerades other clinical entities.Hence, high index of suspicion is required for prompt diagnosis.Histopathological examination and culture are the gold standard diagnostic tools, however no standard treatment protocols ha been mentioned in literature. We present a case of rhinofacial entomopthoromycosis in a yearold ma with a leftsided rhinofacial swelling to highlight the presence of this unusua

BACKGROUND: Rhinofacial conidiobolomycosis (RFC) is an uncommon subcutaneous fungal infection producing painless swelling with grotesque deformity of the face. Although there are case reports and small case series; there are very few prospective studies evaluating treatment outcome and long-term follow-up.
OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the safety and efficacy of combination of itraconazole (200 mg twice daily) and saturated solution of potassium iodide (SSKI) in patients with RFC.
METHODS: Ten patients of RFC were studied over a period of 5 years. Diagnosis was confirmed by clinical, histopathologi

The occurrence, species diversity and some aspects of taxonomical affinity and host selectivity of acaropathogenic fungi associated with phytophagous, saprotrophic and predacious mites in Poland and other European countries were investigated on wild and cultivated plants, in insect feeding sites under the bark and in decayed wood. From among 33 species of fungi affecting mites only five species of Entomophthorales were separated and the most numerous were Neozygites floridana mostly on Tetranychus urticae, N. abacaridis on a few eriophyid species, and Conidiobolus coronatus attacking gamasid m

Subcutaneous mycoses caused by the family Entomophthoraceae is very rare type of disease and is being reported sporadically from various Tropical countries including India. Here we report 8 cases of rhinoentomophthoromycosis caused by Conidiobolous coronatus and 7 cases of chronic subcutaneous phycomycosis caused by Basidiobolus ranarum. Cases were detected during a span of 9 years between 1991 to 1999, from 9 districts in and around Kolkata (Eastern India). Former type of lesions were detected among 20 to 65 age group of healthy individuals, predominantly males (7:1). In the latter type, male

Conidiobolomycosis is reported in the state of Piauí, in the semiarid region of northeastern Brazil. Affected sheep had depression, weight loss, serous or mucohemorrhagic nasal discharge, and cranium-facial asymmetry from exophthalmos of 1 eye, generally with increased volume of the eyeball, keratitis, and corneal ulceration. At necropsy of 60 sheep, friable masses were observed in the posterior region of the nasal cavity, often destroying the ethmoturbinate bones. Frequently, the lesions invaded the nasal sinuses, cribiform plate, orbit, and brain. The masses were irregular, granular with moi

BACKGROUND: Female genital tract (FGT) diseases such as bacterial vaginosis (BV) and sexually transmitted infections are prevalent in South Africa, with young women being at an increased risk. Since imbalances in the FGT microbiome are associated with FGT diseases, it is vital to investigate the factors that influence FGT health. The mycobiome plays an important role in regulating mucosal health, especially when the bacterial component is disturbed. However, we have a limited understanding of the FGT mycobiome since many studies have focused on bacterial communities and have neglected low-abun

Entomophthoromycosis is a chronic fungal granulomatous disease caused by Basidiobolus and Conidiobolus species. This disease is associated with significant morbidity and prolonged treatment. This systematic review aims to address the epidemiology, clinical features, diagnostic methods, therapeutic strategies, and clinical outcomes of entomophthoromycosis. Medline, Embase, Scopus and Web of Science databases were searched using appropriate keywords for entomophthoromycosis from 1 January 2000 to 31 December 2023. A total of 405 cases of entomophthoromycosis were included; of those, Basidiobolom

BACKGROUND: Conidiobolomycosis is a rare tropical rhinofacial fungal infection which has not been well characterised. The available evidence in its management is sparse due to lack of clinical studies and the limited data on antifungal susceptibility patterns.
OBJECTIVE: To analyse the clinical manifestations, antifungal treatment and outcomes of patients with conidiobolomycosis and to determine antifungal susceptibility profiles of the isolates.
PATIENTS/METHODS: Retrospective analysis of data of all patients with a diagnosis of conidiobolomycosis confirmed by histopathology and culture at

Information on the stimulatory and inhibitory effects of cuticular alcohols on growth and virulence of insecticidal fungi is unavailable. Therefore, we set out to describe the content of cuticular and internal alcohols in the body of housefly larvae, pupae, males and females. The total cuticular alcohols in larvae, males and females of Musca domestica were detected in comparable amounts (4.59, 3.95 and 4.03 μg g(-1) insect body, respectively), but occurred in smaller quantities in pupae (2.16 μg g(-1)). The major free alcohol in M. domestica larvae was C(12:0) (70.4%). Internal alcohols of M.

The cuticular and internal lipid composition in Calliphora vomitoria larvae, pupae, and male and female adults was studied. The free fatty acid (FA) compositions of the lipids were chemically characterized using gas chromatography (GC) and gas chromatography-electron impact mass spectrometry (GC-MS). Analyses of cuticular extracts from larvae, pupae, and male and female adults revealed that the carbon numbers of the acids ranged from C7:0 to C22:0, from C8:0 to C24:0, from C7:0 to C24:0 and from C7:0 to C22:0 respectively. The internal lipids of C. vomitoria larvae, pupae, male and female adul

Due to limited access to more powerful diagnostic tools, there are few data on the burden of fungal infections in Côte d'Ivoire, despite a high HIV and TB burden and many cutaneous diseases. Here we estimate the burden of serious fungal infections in this sub-Saharan country with a health profiling description. National demographics were used and PubMed searches to retrieve all published articles on fungal infections in Côte d'Ivoire and other bordering countries in West Africa. When no data existed, risk populations were used to estimate frequencies of fungal infections, using previously desc

Several subcutaneous and deep-seated mycoses are either observed more frequently in the tropical areas or are restricted to certain regions within the tropics. These mycoses include sporotichosis, chromoblastomycosis, entomophthoromycosis, eumycetoma, lobomycosis, and paracoccidioidomycosis. In sporotrichosis and paracoccidioidomycosis, therapy often results in either complete resolution or marked improvement. For decades sporotrichosis has been treated successfully with potassium iodide, but recently the triazole compounds, especially itraconazole, have proved effective and free of major side

The Zygomycetes represent relatively uncommon isolates in the clinical laboratory, reflecting either environmental contaminants or, less commonly, a clinical disease called zygomycosis. There are two orders of Zygomycetes containing organisms that cause human disease, the Mucorales and the Entomophthorales. The majority of human illness is caused by the Mucorales. While disease is most commonly linked to Rhizopus spp., other organisms are also associated with human infection, including Mucor, Rhizomucor, Absidia, Apophysomyces, Saksenaea, Cunninghamella, Cokeromyces, and Syncephalastrum spp. A
