[Chloramphenicol eyedrops in acute bacterial conjunctivitis. A comparison of 2 dosage regimes in general practice].

Acute bacterial conjunctivitis is a prevalent infection in the population. Topically applied chloramphenicol has been the most frequently used treatment on this indication. The recommended dosage of 0.5% eye drops has been one drop hourly/every two hours for three days, thereafter every 4-6 hours. This dosage is not based on scientific documentation. We have conducted a clinical trial in general practice to compare the standard dosage with a simplified dose regimen. 77 patients were allocated to the regimen described above and 75 patients were instructed to use the drops four times a day. Evaluation and modulation of bactericidal potential of different antibacterial agents against bacterial pathogens from conjunctivitis infections.

Conjunctivitis is one of the most common eye infections seen in hospitals. Youngsters under the age of seven, women at age 22 and men at age 28 are most likely to be diagnosed with this infection. The current study was designed to identify and characterize the conjunctivitis associated pathogens and to evaluate their sensitivity or resistance against commonly used antibiotics (metronidazole, ciprofloxacin, azithromycin, and levofloxacin), aqueous plant extracts (Ficus religiosa, Syzygium cumini, Azadirachta indica, Allium cepa, Eucalyptus camaldulensis, Syzygium aromaticum, Aloe barbadensis, a

[From the Cochrane Library: Marginally higher chance of cure by antibiotic treatment in acute bacterial conjunctivitis].

Acute bacterial conjunctivitis is one of the most frequently encountered ocular disorders in primary care. It is frequently self-limiting, and the widespread use of broad-spectrum antibiotics has led to concerns regarding antibiotic resistance. Therefore, a Cochrane systematic review of 5 randomised clinical trials that compared antibiotic treatment with placebo in patients with acute bacterial conjunctivitis was recently updated. The chances of clinical and microbiological benefits of topical antibiotics were small but statistically significantly higher compared with placebo in the early stag

Slime-producing Staphylococcus epidermidis and S. aureus in acute bacterial conjunctivitis in soft contact lens wearers.

In recent years, an increase in ocular pathologies related to soft contact lens has been observed. The most common infectious agents were Staphylococcus spp. Some strains produce an extracellular polysaccharidic slime that can cause severe infections. Polysaccharide synthesis is under genetic control and involves a specific intercellular adhesion (ica) locus, in particular, icaA and icaD genes. Conjunctival swabs from 97 patients with presumably bacterial bilateral conjunctivitis, wearers of soft contact lenses were examined. We determined the ability of staphylococci to produce slime, relatin

Microbiological etiology and susceptibility of bacterial conjunctivitis isolates from clinical trials with ophthalmic, twice-daily besifloxacin.

INTRODUCTION: Bacterial conjunctivitis is a contagious infection of the surface of the eye usually treated empirically with topical antibiotics. Since the etiologic agent is rarely identified, it is important to monitor which bacteria cause conjunctivitis and determine their antibacterial resistance profiles. METHODS: A total of 496 bacterial samples were isolated during a randomized, double-masked, vehicle-controlled, parallel-group study conducted in the United States with besifloxacin ophthalmic suspension 0.6% dosed twice daily. Species were determined by standard biochemical and/or molec
