Hearing impairment (HI) is one of the most common sensory disabilities with exceptionally high genetic heterogeneity. Of genetic HI cases, 30% are syndromic and 70% are nonsyndromic. For nonsyndromic (NS) HI, 77% of the cases are due to autosomal recessive (AR) inheritance. ARNSHI is usually congenital/prelingual, severe-to-profound, affects all frequencies and is not progressive. Thus far, 73 ARNSHI genes have been identified. Populations with high rates of consanguinity have been crucial in the identification of ARNSHI genes, and 92% (67/73) of these genes were identified in consanguineous f

INTRODUCTION AND BACKGROUND: Familial hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis (FHL) is a rare, life-threatening systemic inflammatory disorder characterized by excessive immune activation. It is primarily caused by mutations affecting cytotoxic function in natural killer cells and cytotoxic T lymphocytes. Early diagnosis and treatment are crucial due to the condition's rapid progression and high mortality without intervention.
CASE PRESENTATION: In August 2023, a 3-year-old Asian male patient was admitted, exhibiting symptoms of high fever, jaundice, and hepatosplenomegaly. Initial investigations

We hypothesized that consanguineous marriage will remain a risk factor for pregnancy outcome and offspring mortality, but the development in demographic, socioeconomic conditions and increased utilization of maternal and child health care services during postglobalization era would work as a buffer in the reduction of child mortality rates. Data fromNational Family Health Surveys 4(2015-2016) and 5(2019-2021) were pooled and used for the analysis. Binary logistic regression and Cox proportional hazard regression models were used to examine the effects of close (CC) and distant (DC) consanguini

UNLABELLED: The Objective of this study was to identify the prevalence and describe the characteristics of non-syndromic orofacial cleft (NSOFC) in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia and examine the influence of consanguinity.
STUDY DESIGN: Six hospitals were selected to represent Jeddah's five municipal districts. New born infants with NSOFC born between 1st of January 2010 to 31st of December 2011 were clinically examined and their number compared to the total number of infants born in these hospitals to calculate the prevalence of NSOFC types and sub-phenotypes. Referred Infants were included for the pu

BACKGROUND: Breast cancer is worldwide the most common cancer in women and is a major public health problem. Genes with high or low penetrance are now clearly implicated in the onset of breast cancer, mostly the BRCA genes. All women in families at high risk of breast cancer do not develop tumours, even when they carry the familial mutation, suggesting the existence of genetic and environmental protective factors. Several studies have shown that consanguinity is linked to a decreased or an increased risk of breast cancer, but to the best of our knowledge, there is no study concerning the assoc

Consanguinity promotes homozygosity of recessive susceptibility gene variants and can be used to investigate a recessive component in diseases whose inheritance is uncertain. The objective of this study was to assess the association between consanguinity and preterm birth (PTB), stratified by gestational age and clinical presentation (spontaneous vs. medically indicated). Data were collected on 39,745 singleton livebirths without major birth defects, admitted to 19 hospitals in Lebanon, from September 2003 to December 2007. Deliveries before completed 33 weeks' gestation and deliveries at 33-3

We report on a 24-week fetus with multiple organ anomalies secondary to biparental inheritance of an apparently balanced t(17;20) reciprocal translocation. The pregnancy was terminated following the discovery by ultrasound of an abnormal heart and micrognathia. At autopsy, the following anomalies were found: Pierre-Robin sequence, hypoplasia of the right ventricle with muscular hypertrophy, and endocardial fibroelastosis, hypoplastic lungs, dysplastic left kidney, bilateral pelvicalyceal dilatation, central nervous system periventricular heterotopias and right sided club foot. Given the endoca

BACKGROUND: The levels of consanguinity in human populations are known to be influenced by demographic and geographical factors, and by socio-cultural customs that govern spouse choice. Within the general model applicable to the populations of Western Europe, Galicia (north-west Spain) is a region that is especially interesting, due to its geographical and historical peculiarities that could have conditioned its behaviour pattern with respect to consanguinity.
PRIMARY OBJECTIVE: The object of this paper is to analyse the evolution of the consanguinity structure levels in the rural population

INTRODUCTION: Spina bifida is an important birth defect. Its incidence differs from one country to another due to different factors. The aims of this study were: (1) to estimate the incidence of spina bifida in Al-Madinah Al-Munawarah and compare it with the Eastern part of the Kingdom, and (2) to find out if consanguinity is a risk factor.
METHODOLOGY: A prospective study was conducted over the period from April 1996 to March 1997 in the city of Al-Madinah Al-Munawarah, Western Province, Saudi Arabia. New cases of spina bifida were studied and compared to a control group of 72 cases.

Familial exudative vitreoretinopathy (FEVR) is a disorder characterised by peripheral retinal vascularisation with subsequent traction of retinal vessels and detachment. Recently, autosomal dominant FEVR (ad FEVR) has been mapped to 11q13 by linkage in four northern European families. We describe a large consanguineous Asian family in which the severity of the proband's eye disease suggested homozygosity for a disease allele. Thirty family members were assessed by ophthalmological examination and fluorescein angiography. Thirteen had unequivocal features of FEVR. A further two were classified

This paper deals with some other population genetic aspects associated with the incidence of a type of primary congenital glaucoma that occurs very frequently in the Gypsy population of Slovakia. In addition to the decreased fertility of affected individuals of Gypsy origin being determined, the relative reproduction fitness and the selection coefficient against this disease were estimated. An increased number of kinship intermarriages in parents of the patients were recorded, namely in the Gypsy group (45.6%). The average inbreeding coefficient for the Gypsy group (F = 0.0091) and the non-Gyp

BACKGROUND: Systemic Autoinflammatory disorders (SAIDs) are a group of immunedysregulation disorders driven by aberrant activation of the innate immune system, often linked to single-gene mutations. While consanguinity is a known risk factor for inherited disorders, including autoimmune diseases, its impact in the prevalence and genetic variability of SAIDs remains insufficiently explored. OBJECTIVE: To assess the consanguinity rate among patients with SAIDs and to evaluate its impact on the prevalence and genetic variability of rare monogenic SAIDs. METHODS: We conducted a descriptive, longit

Selenocosmia jiafu (S. jiafu) has been recently identified as a new species of spider in China. It lives in the same habitat as various other venomous spiders, including Chilobrachys jingzhao (C. jingzhao), Selenocosmia huwena (S. huwena), and Macrothele raveni (M. raveni). The venom from these different species of spiders exhibits some similarities and some differences in terms of their biochemical and electrophysiological properties. With the objective to illustrate the diversity in venom peptide toxins and to establish the evolutionary relationship between different spider species, we first

PURPOSE: 3-Methylcrotonyl-CoA carboxylase deficiency (MCCD) is an autosomal recessive disorder of leucine catabolism that has a highly variable clinical phenotype, ranging from acute metabolic acidosis to nonspecific symptoms such as developmental delay, failure to thrive, hemiparesis, muscular hypotonia, and multiple sclerosis. Implementation of newborn screening for MCCD has resulted in broadening the range of phenotypic expression to include asymptomatic adults. The purpose of this study was to identify factors underlying the varying phenotypes of MCCD.
