Enhancing patient understanding in obstetrics: the role of generative AI in simplifying informed consent for labor induction with oxytocin.

Informed consent is a cornerstone of ethical medical practice, particularly in obstetrics where procedures like labor induction carry significant risks and require clear patient understanding. Despite legal mandates for patient materials to be accessible, many consent forms remain too complex, resulting in patient confusion and dissatisfaction. This study explores the use of Generative Artificial Intelligence (GAI) to simplify informed consent for labor induction with oxytocin, ensuring content is both medically accurate and comprehensible at an 8th-grade readability level. GAI-generated conse

Effect of informed parental consent on mothers' knowledge of newborn screening.

To determine whether knowledge was improved as a result of obtaining informed consent from parents for newborn screening of their infants for phenylketonuria (PKU) and other hereditary metabolic disorders, new mothers in seven Maryland hospitals were interviewed either before receiving a standard disclosure (n = 210) or after giving consent (n = 418). The mean knowledge score of the women interviewed after giving consent was significantly higher (P less than .001). Receiving the disclosure was a more powerful predictor of knowledge score, accounting for 40% of the variance, than demographic fa

A comprehensive analysis of MRI research risks: in support of full disclosure.

Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) procedures have been used for over 20 years. This modality is considered relatively safe and holds great promise. Yet, MRI has a number of risks. In order for MRI research to meet the Canadian standard of disclosure, the investigator must communicate and make note of all risks in their research protocols and consent forms. Those creating and reviewing research protocols and consent forms must take notice of the different circumstances under which MRI poses a risk. First, this paper will describe the current standard of disclosure in Canada for research particip

Anatomical human body donation in South Africa: Inconsistencies of informed consent.

INTRODUCTION: Informed consent is critical for maintaining the ethical standards associated with the utilization of human donor bodies by tertiary education institutions. Body donation programs undertake the responsibility for procuring human donor bodies for didactic and research purposes. However, its processes require scrutiny regarding best practice guidelines and the South African National Health Act (SA-NHA) (2013). Moreover, acknowledging and addressing the current perceptions of human body donation are indispensable in bridging the gap between academia and society. This study aimed to

Comparison Between Multimedia and Written Informed Consent for Lumbar Transforaminal Epidural Steroid Injection: A Randomized Controlled Pilot Trial.

BACKGROUND: Informed consent is a crucial ethical and legal requirement in medical practice to ensure that patients understand the risks, benefits, and alternatives of medical procedures. Recent advances in multimedia technology have facilitated the exploration of multimedia consent, aiming to enhance patient understanding and satisfaction. Ascertaining that patients have full comprehension of the procedures before opting to undergo them is especially important now that instances of such procedures as lumbar transforaminal epidural steroid injections (TESIs) are increasing. OBJECTIVES: To det

Informed Consent in Elective Orthopedic Surgeries: A Scoping Review of Medico-Legal Challenge and Team-Based Application.

INTRODUCTION: Despite established ethical principles, a critical synthesis of how informed consent deficiencies, leading to costly malpractice lawsuits in elective orthopedic surgery, relate to medico-legal outcomes, documentation pitfalls, and team roles is lacking. This scoping review aimed to investigate the status of obtaining informed consent by the treatment team in elective orthopedic surgeries and the related legal consequences. METHODS: Following the Arksey & O'Malley framework update by Levac et al., we conducted a comprehensive search across PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science databases

Perceptions, practices, and barriers in surgical informed consent: A cross-sectional study from Sudan: Surgical Informed Consent in Sudan.

BACKGROUND: Informed consent is a cornerstone of ethical surgical practice, yet significant challenges persist in ensuring patients' comprehension, particularly in low-resource settings. Cultural norms, literacy barriers, and limited institutional support often hinder truly informed decision-making. METHODS: A hospital-based cross-sectional study was conducted from September to December 2024 at a rural surgical center in Omdurman, Sudan. A total of 422 adult patients undergoing elective surgery were interviewed postoperatively using a validated, culturally adapted questionnaire. Descriptive a

[Quality of information in informed consents for hernioplasty: readability, comprehension, and patient perception].

BACKGROUND: Informed consent (IC) is the process by which patients receive information from healthcare professionals in order to understand the essential aspects of a proposed intervention and to make an autonomous decision about whether to accept or refuse it. In recent years, increasing attention has been paid to written informed consent forms, partly because they appear to provide a more objective record of the communication process within the clinical relationship. OBJECTIVE: To analyze the readability of informed consent documents used for hernioplasty and to evaluate whether patients re

Evaluating large language models for simplifying non-English medical consent with clinician involvement.

Informed consent forms are essential for protecting patient rights, but are often difficult to understand, especially in non-English settings where formal language and long, context-dependent sentences hinder comprehension. This study evaluated whether large language models (LLMs) can simplify Chinese language surgical consent forms and whether clinician revision can further improve the output. Official forms from nine hospitals were used to create three versions of each document: the original, an LLM-simplified version, and a clinician-revised version. We assessed text structure, readability,

Simplifying consent for HIV testing is associated with an increase in HIV testing and case detection in highest risk groups, San Francisco January 2003-June 2007.

BACKGROUND: Populations at highest risk for HIV infection face multiple barriers to HIV testing. To facilitate HIV testing procedures, the San Francisco General Hospital Medical Center eliminated required written patient consent for HIV testing in its medical settings in May 2006. To describe the change in HIV testing rates in different hospital settings and populations after the change in HIV testing policy in the SFDH medical center, we performed an observational study using interrupted time series analysis. METHODS: Data from all patients aged 18 years and older seen from January 2003 thro

Assent, parental consent and reconsent for health research in Africa: thematic analysis of national guidelines and lessons from the SickleInAfrica registry.

The enrolment of children and adolescents in health research requires that attention to be paid to specific assent and consent requirements such as the age range for seeking assent; conditions for parental consent (and waivers); the age group required to provide written assent; content of assent forms; if separate assent and parental consent forms should be used, consent from emancipated young adults; reconsent at the age of adulthood when a waiver of assent requirements may be appropriate and the conditions for waiving assent requirements. Disclosure of Long-Term Complications in Informed Consent for Adolescent Idiopathic Scoliosis Undergoing Posterior Spinal Fusion Surgery: A Systematic Review of Online Resources.

Background: Posterior spinal fusion (PSF) for adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS) is a standard procedure with recognized long-term complications that may emerge years after surgery. Informed consent requires disclosure of material risks, but it is unclear whether these long-term sequelae are consistently communicated. This study systematically reviewed publicly available consent materials to assess disclosure of evidence-based long-term complications of PSF for AIS. Methods: Official websites of spine, orthopedic, and neurosurgical societies, along with major hospitals across North America,

Informed consent for biobanking: consensus-based guidelines for adequate comprehension.

PURPOSE: Federal regulations and best practice guidelines identify categories of information that should be communicated to prospective biobank participants during the informed consent process. However, uncertainty remains about which of this information participants must understand to provide valid consent. METHODS: We conducted a Delphi process to define "adequate comprehension" in the context of biobanking consent. The process involved an iterative series of three online surveys of a diverse panel of 51 experts, including genome scientists, biobank managers, ethics and policy experts, and

What participants understand about a maternal serum alpha-fetoprotein screening program.

We investigated the knowledge of pregnant women participating in a maternal serum alphafetoprotein (MSAFP) screening program for the detection of neural tube defects (NTDs) in the fetus. Women participating in the screening program scored higher on two knowledge tests than a comparison group of pregnant women who were not offered screening. However, there were substantial gaps in the knowledge base of women in the program, as measured by one of the tests. Women did not misinterpret a negative test result to mean that the test had identified a potential problem with the fetus; instead, there is
