INTRODUCTION: Constraint-induced movement therapy has been shown to be effective in a sub-group of sub-acute stroke survivors but has not been widely implemented in the United Kingdom. This study explored therapist and stroke survivor perceptions and experiences of constraint-induced movement therapy and explored the non-agreement (incongruence) and agreement (congruence) of these perspectives.
METHOD: Consenting occupational therapists (n = 3) and physiotherapist (n = 5) participated in a focus group discussion. Four-stroke survivors undertook pre- and post-constraint-induced movement therap

Although the behavioral outcome of Constraint-Induced Movement Therapy (CIMT) is well known, and that a combination of CIMT and arm use training potentiates the effect, there has been limited study of the brain circuits involved that respond to therapy. An understanding of CIMT from a brain network level would be useful for guiding the duration of effective therapy, the type of training regime to potentiate the outcome, as well as brain regional targets that might be amenable for direct neuromodulation. Here we investigated the effect of CIMT therapy alone unconfounded by additional rehabilita

We examined the efficacy of modified constraint-induced movement therapy (CIMT) and hand-arm bimanual intensive therapy (HABIT) in a special education preschool/kindergarten in Israel. Twelve children (1.5-7 years) with congenital hemiplegic cerebral palsy were randomized to receive modified CIMT (n = 6) or HABIT (n = 6). Occupational and physical therapists administered usual and customary care for 8 weeks; children then crossed over to receive CIMT or HABIT 2 hr/day, 6 days/week for 8 weeks from their occupational therapist. The Assisting Hand Assessment and Quality of Upper Extremity Skills

PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to investigate the feasibility of implementing constraint-induced movement therapy (CIMT) in Jordan, a country with a different culture to that of the western world where CIMT has previously been investigated.
METHOD: Twenty children with unilateral cerebral palsy (CP) were randomised to either CIMT or neurodevelopmental treatment (NDT). NDT is the usual treatment method in Jordan for children with CP and was used in the control group. Fourteen children fulfilled the treatment; mean age was 47 months (SD 19 months) in the CIMT group and 65 months (SD26 month

BACKGROUND: Constraint-Induced Movement Therapy (CIMT) is a therapeutic intervention using constraint of the less-affected limb and intensive use of the hemiplegic extremity in individuals with hemiplegia. The purpose of this study was to determine whether children with cerebral palsy (CP) who have undergone a 2-week function-based CIMT show improved hand function and underlying muscle activation changes associated with functional gains.
METHODS: Six children with hemiplegic CP participated in the study, receiving 4 hours of therapy 5 days a week coupled with bi-valve casts worn 8-12 hours fo

PURPOSE: Laboratory studies confirm that constraint-induced movement therapy (CIMT) improves upper-extremity (UE) function after stroke. Due to strict patient criteria and the intensive resources required, CIMT has been slow to become part of rehabilitation practice. Our purpose was to determine the feasibility and effectiveness of an adapted experimental protocol within an outpatient clinical setting for a patient with moderate to severe UE impairment who did not meet traditional CIMT criteria.
PATIENT DESCRIPTION: AJ, a 16-year-old male, experienced a left middle cerebral artery ischemic st

BACKGROUND: Botulinum toxin type A (BoNT-A) effectively reduces focal spasticity. However, this pharmacological effect often fails to translate into consistent functional gains when patients receive conventional rehabilitation after injection.
METHODS: Clinical data from 102 patients with chronic stroke and finger flexor spasticity who received ultrasound-guided BoNT-A injections were retrospectively analyzed in a single-center cohort study. Patients were categorized into home-based modified constraint-induced movement therapy (h-mCIMT) or dose-matched conventional home-based occupational the

This single-blind randomized controlled trial investigated the effectiveness of surface electromyography (sEMG)-triggered constraint-induced movement cycling therapy (CIMCT) in improving balance, lower extremity strength, and activities of daily living in patients with chronic stroke. The participants included patients with chronic stroke-induced hemiplegia who had been diagnosed for more than 6 months, with a minimum score of 24 points on the Mini-Mental State Examination and above level 3 on the Brunnstrom stages. The trial lasted 4 weeks and participants were divided into a CIMCT group and

BACKGROUND: Previous studies have compared the effectiveness of constraint-induced movement therapy (CIMT) by different training doses. However, whether the dosing schedule, that is, intensive or distributed, influences the effectiveness of CIMT in children with unilateral cerebral palsy (CP) is unknown.
OBJECTIVE: To investigate the effectiveness of intensive and distributed CIMT for children with unilateral CP.
METHODS: Fifty children with unilateral CP were assigned to intensive or distributed CIMT group with a total of 36 training hours. The intensive CIMT was delivered within 1 week, an

Constraint-induced (CI) movement therapy is a promising therapy for improving upper limb function in adults after stroke. It involves restraint of the non-involved limb and extensive movement practice with the involved limb. In this study, a single-blinded, randomized, control study was performed to examine the efficacy of CI therapy, modified to be child friendly, in children with hemiplegic cerebral palsy (CP). Twenty-two children (8 females, 14 males; mean age 6 y 8 mo [SD 1 y 4 mo]; range 4-8 y) were randomized to either an intervention group (n=11) or a delayed treatment control group (n=
