Brace yourself: neural and computational insights into the experience of mental effort.

The subjective experience of mental effort is critical for adaptive cognitive control, yet its neural and computational underpinnings remain elusive. Here, we combine hierarchical drift-diffusion modeling and EEG to investigate how trial-by-trial fluctuations in both preparatory and task-related neural activity shape subjective effort ratings. Participants performed an arithmetic task of variable difficulty, choosing task difficulty in advance, which allowed us to isolate neural signatures of preparation (contingent negative variation) and task engagement (P3 amplitude). Computational modeling

Mismatch Negativity in Schizophrenia, Unaffected First-degree Relatives, and Healthy Controls.

BACKGROUND: Mismatch negativity (MMN) amplitude is attenuated in schizophrenia patients (SZ). However, variability in illness course among SZ samples and types of deviant stimuli used in MMN paradigms have contributed to inconsistent findings across studies. Though MMN is suggested to be impaired in schizotypy, the potential link between the two is yet to be systematically examined in unaffected first-degree relatives of schizophrenia patients (FDR). METHODS: The SZ sample had twenty-two drug-naïve or drug-free patients (dSZ) and thirty chronic/medicated patients (cSZ). dSZ and cSZ patients w

Dealing with uncertainty: A high-density EEG investigation on how intolerance of uncertainty affects emotional predictions.

Intolerance of uncertainty (IU) can influence emotional predictions, constructed by the brain (generation stage) to prearrange action (implementation stage), and update internal models according to incoming stimuli (updating stage). However, neurocomputational mechanisms by which IU affects emotional predictions are unclear. This high-density EEG study investigated if IU predicted event-related potentials (ERPs) and brain sources activity developing along the stages of emotional predictions, as a function of contextual uncertainty. Thirty-six undergraduates underwent a S1-S2 paradigm, with emo

Is weak oral language associated with poor spelling in school-age children with specific language impairment, dyslexia or both?

The purpose of this study was to test the hypothesis that word reading accuracy, not oral language, is associated with spelling performance in school-age children. We compared fourth grade spelling accuracy in children with specific language impairment (SLI), dyslexia or both (SLI/dyslexia) to their typically developing grade-matched peers. Results of the study revealed that children with SLI performed similarly to their typically developing peers on a single-word spelling task. Alternatively, those with dyslexia and SLI/dyslexia evidenced poor spelling accuracy. Errors made by both those with

Stimulus-preceding negativity is modulated by action-outcome contingency.

We investigated the relationship between action-outcome contingency and stimulus-preceding negativity (SPN), a motivationally sensitive event-related potential. Neuroimaging studies have shown that insular cortex (a known source of the SPN) is more activated prior to rewards that are contingent on prior correct action than rewards that are given gratuitously. We compared two gambling tasks, one in which the participant attempted to guess the profitable key-press option (choice) and one in which rewards were simply given at random (no-choice). The SPN that developed in anticipation of feedback

Idiopathic spinal myoclonus: a clinical and neurophysiological assessment of a movement disorder of uncertain origin.

Spinal Myoclonus (SM) is characterized by brief and sudden movements caused by the activation of muscles belonging to adjacent spinal myotomes. Recent reports have indicated that "typical" clinical and electrophysiological features of SM can be mimicked voluntarily. A useful tool that can distinguish between organic and psychogenic jerks is the detection of a Bereitschaftspotential (BP). In this study, we looked for evidence of a BP in a cohort of patients with idiopathic SM. A clinical and neurophysiological assessment of 20 patients affected by idiopathic SM was performed. A video EEG-EMG mu

Electrophysiological and behavioral evidence of auditory processing deficits in children with reading disorder.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of the research was to investigate auditory processing abilities in children with reading disorders using electrophysiological and behavioral tasks. METHODS: Differences in auditory processing between control, compensated (age appropriate reading skills with a history of reading disorder), and reading disordered groups were systematically investigated. RESULTS: The reading disorder group had significantly lower results than control and compensated reader groups for most tests in the reading and auditory processing test battery. All children with a reading disorder did not

Similarities in the phenotype of the auditory neural substrate in children with Asperger syndrome and their parents.

Asperger syndrome (AS) is a developmental disorder of brain function characterized by deficits in social interaction including difficulties in understanding emotional expressions. Children with AS share some of the behavioural characteristics with their parents and AS seems to run particularly in the male members of the same families. The aim of the present study was to determine whether similarities could be found between children with AS and their parents at central auditory processing. It was found that in children with AS the sound encoding, as reflected by the exogenous components of even

Real-time monitoring of brain activity in patients with specific phobia during exposure therapy, employing a stereoscopic virtual environment.

Exposure therapy is a behavioral technique that is reported to be the most effective, long-lasting treatment for patients suffering from specific phobia. During the performance in enclosed spaces, the patients show a strong psychophysiological response to the phobic stimulus that is normally avoided. This psychophysiological response changes characteristically during the course of exposure. We implemented an electroencephalographic monitoring focusing on event-related potentials to resolve the modulation of preattentive information processing by the anxiety state of the subject. Therefore, mis

A laboratory comparison of two variations of differential-reinforcement-of-low-rate procedures.

We compared 2 variations of differential-reinforcement-of-low-rate (DRL) procedures: spaced-responding DRL, in which a reinforcer was delivered contingent on each response if a specified interval had passed since the last response, and full-session DRL, in which a reinforcer was presented at the end of an interval if the response rate was below criterion within the specified interval. We used a human-operant procedure and analyzed within-session responding to assess any similarities or differences between procedures. Data revealed a positive contingency between responding and reinforcement und

Event-related brain potentials reflect increased concentration ability after mindfulness-based cognitive therapy for depression: a randomized clinical trial.

Mindfulness-based cognitive therapy (MBCT) effectively prevents relapse/recurrence in major depression. The ability to deploy and maintain attention on a particular focus is considered as a prerequisite for 'mindful', 'metacognitive' awareness, and hence crucial for therapy success. Accordingly, sustained concentration is the skill most extensively taught in MBCT. The goal of the present study was to test whether this ability increases after MBCT, as assumed. The late component of the contingent negative variation (CNV), an event-related brain potential (ERP), known to reflect the allocation o

On the regularity of preparatory activity preceding movements with the dominant and non-dominant hand: a readiness potential study.

The readiness potential (RP), a slow negative electroencephalographic pre-movement potential, was reported to commence earlier for movements with the non-dominant left hand than with the dominant right hand. Latencies in these reports were always calculated from averaged RPs, whereas onset times of individual trials remained inaccessible. The aim was to use a new statistical approach to examine whether a few left hand trials with very early pre-movement activity disproportionally affect the onset of the average. We recorded RPs in 28 right-handed subjects while they made self-paced repetitive

The visual magnocellular pathway in Chinese-speaking children with developmental dyslexia.

Previous research into the cognitive processes involved in reading Chinese and developmental dyslexia in Chinese, revealed that the single most important factor appears to be orthographic processing skills rather than phonological skills. Also some studies have indicated that even in alphabetic languages some dyslexic individuals reveal deficits in orthographic processing skills, which are linked to a deficit in the visual magnocellular pathway. The current study therefore employed a visual psychophysical experiment together with visual and auditory event-related potential (ERP) experiments el

[EEG correlates of different methods of information processing in response selection].

The lateralized readiness potential as a measure of response tendencies has become a relevant method in experimental psychology within the last decade. This measure delivers information about response preparation long before the overt response. Applying the method of measuring event-related lateralizations (ERL) of the EEG to posterior sites, correlates of processing of spatial information and of response selection have been found. The present study investigated the topographical distribution of asymmetries at the moment of response selection. Response selection was assumed to be reflected in

Sustained consummatory reward processing deficits in remitted melancholic depression.

BACKGROUND: Depression is believed to be associated with functional alterations in both the anticipation and the consumption phase of the reward processing. It may also manifest in depressed individuals during remission. Still, depression is a heterogeneous syndrome, and reward-related impairments could be more evident in those having melancholic depression. Therefore, the present study aimed to examine whether neural abnormalities are present in individuals with remitted melancholic depression during the reward anticipation and reward consumption phases. METHODS: Thirty-one participants with

Theta-frequency transcranial alternating current stimulation enhances proactive control in individuals.

Proactive control is defined as the capacity of an individual to selectively allocate attentional resources to task-relevant cues during the preparatory phase of a task, actively encode and sustain this information within working memory, and subsequently establish appropriate response readiness. Research demonstrates that proactive control has neuroplasticity. The dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC) is critically implicated in the modulation of proactive control. Theta oscillations, functioning as a neural gating mechanism, facilitate the preferential allocation of attentional resources tow

Motor planning and performance in transitive and intransitive gesture execution and imagination: Does EEG (RP) activity predict hemodynamic (fNIRS) response?

The interplay between neural structures and processes underlying motor planning and proper movement initiation and guidance is still a matter of debate. The present study aimed at investigating cortical correlates of motor planning and production when execution and imagery of real-life gestures are performed, with an additional focus on potential specificities of meaningful transitive/intransitive gestures. Electrophysiological (Readiness Potential - RP) and functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) measures were analyzed to investigate the relationship between processes supporting action

The bereitschaftspotential in jerky movement disorders.

OBJECTIVE: To assess the diagnostic value of the bereitschaftspotential (BP) in jerky movement disorders. METHODS: A cross-sectional case series of 48 patients with psychogenic jerks, Gilles de la Tourette syndrome (GTS) or myoclonus was investigated. We measured the BP prior to the spontaneous jerk and voluntary wrist extension. In addition, the various jerky movements were imitated by 25 healthy subjects. RESULTS: For patients with psychogenic jerks, we observed significantly more BPs; however, the BP was not identified prior to self-paced wrist extensions in 59% of cases. In contrast, non
