Use of hormonal contraceptives and antidepressants and risks of suicidal behavior and accidents among women with premenstrual disorders: a nationwide cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Women with premenstrual disorders (PMDs) are at increased risks of suicidal behavior and accidents. However, the effect of PMD first-line treatment on such risks have not been assessed. METHODS: To study the association between use of hormonal contraceptives or antidepressants and subsequent risks of suicidal behavior and accidents among women with PMDs. We conducted a nationwide register-based cohort study with between- and within-individual analyses in Sweden. All women with a clinical diagnosis/indication of PMDs recorded in the Patient Register and the Prescribed Drug Register

Hormonal contraceptive affects heterosexual but not homosexual behavior in free-ranging female Japanese macaques over 17 mating seasons.

We assessed the effect of a progestin-based contraceptive treatment (chlormadinone acetate) on female heterosexual and homosexual behaviors in a free-ranging group of Japanese macaques (Macaca fuscata) living at Arashiyama-Kyoto, Central Japan. The data included estimated intensity of fertility cues, sexual solicitations and mounting behaviors collected daily during 17 consecutive mating seasons (1995-2012) from 159 females. Females that were on contraception: (1) exhibited less intense cues of putative fertility and for shorter periods; (2) were solicited by fewer males, and those males that

Contraceptive use, knowledge, attitude, perceptions and sexual behavior among female University students in Uganda: a cross-sectional survey.

BACKGROUND: In Uganda, the risk of unintended pregnancies and unsafe abortions remains high due to relatively low contraceptive use. There is paucity of data on knowledge, attitudes, perceptions and practices towards modern contraceptives and, sexual and reproductive health especially among the young female university students. METHODS: A survey was conducted at Makerere University main campus in Kampala, Uganda during April 2014. A team of well-trained and experienced research assistants interviewed female undergraduate students who provided data on socio-demographic characteristics, knowled

Effect of behavioral interventions on contraceptive use among women living with HIV: Systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials.

BACKGROUND: Contraceptive use is a cost-effective public health strategy to prevent unplanned pregnancy, maternal mortality and morbidity, and reduce vertical HIV transmission. However, contraceptive use remains low among women living with HIV. Reviews examining effect of behavioral interventions on contraceptive use among women living with HIV using randomized controlled trials are limited. We evaluated the effect of behavioral interventions on contraceptive use among women living with HIV using randomized controlled trials. METHODS: We conducted a systematic literature search across PubMed,

Exploring contraceptive knowledge and sexual behavior among high school students in a middle-income country: a cross-sectional study in Tunisia.

BACKGROUND: In today's post-revolution era, with demographic, cultural, and social changes, Tunisian society is witnessing several transformations: There's a rise in young single mothers and early sexual activity. A quarter of the population comprises young Tunisians who struggle with limited access to education and healthcare. Only 19.1% know how to prevent Sexually Transmitted Diseases (STDs), and 16% lack access to contraception. This insufficient sexual health knowledge exposes them to risks such as STDs, unintended teenage pregnancies, unsafe abortions, infertility, and even death. This s

Sexual behavior, use of contraceptive methods and risk factors for HPV infections of students living in central Italy: implications for vaccination strategies.

The most frequent risk factors related to the infection/persistence of HPV in the population are an early start of sexual activity, the number of sexual partners, smoking, and the utilization of some contraceptive methods. In Italy, HPV vaccine is offered free of charge to all 12-year-old female adolescents, with a possible extension to other age groups according to Regional policies. In order to value the suitability of the current HPV vaccination strategies in Italy, an epidemiological study on sexual habits in adolescents and young adults was organized. An anonymous questionnaire on sexual

Application of individual behavioral models to predict willingness to use modern contraceptives among pastoralist women in Afar region, Northern Ethiopia.

BACKGROUND: Use of modern contraceptive methods reduces the risk of unwanted pregnancy, and is influenced by individual-level factors. Willingness to use modern contraceptive methods maybe a useful metric when considering health outcomes as it could predict health behaviors. Therefore, the current study aimed to assess the willingness of women to use modern contraceptives in Afar pastoralist communities. METHODS: A community-based cross-sectional study was conducted from May 1 to 30, 2016. Three hundred forty-five women of childbearing age (15-49 years) were systematically sampled with propor

[Results of a case-control study of the current effect of various factors of cervical cancer risk. 2. Contraceptive behavior and the smoking factor].

We considered in this study 309 patients with cervical intraepithelial neoplasia (CIN) or invasive cervical carcinoma and 490 women without pathological changes in the cervical epithelium. The interviews was performed using a standardised questionnaire. The percentage of women who attended screening programmes for cervical carcinoma amounted to 83.5% for the study group and 81% for the control group. The relative risk (RR) for developing CIN or invasive cervical carcinoma increased with the use of hormonal contraceptives; the increase being statistically significant (RR = 3.5; p = 0.006). More

"If I use family planning, I may have trouble getting pregnant next time I want to": A multicountry survey-based exploration of perceived contraceptive-induced fertility impairment and its relationship to contraceptive behaviors.

OBJECTIVES: We aim to assess women's perceptions regarding contraceptive effects on fertility across a diversity of settings in sub-Saharan Africa and how they vary by women's characteristics. We also aim to examine how such beliefs relate to women's contraceptive practices and intentions. STUDY DESIGN: This study uses cross-sectional survey data among women aged 15 to 49 in nine sub-Saharan African geographies from the Performance Monitoring for Action project. Our main measure of interest assessed women's perceptions of contraceptive-induced fertility impairment. We examined factors related

Intention to switch from short-acting to long-acting reversible contraceptives among refugee women in Ethiopia: application of the theory of planned behavior.

BACKGROUND: The validity of the theory of planned behavior (TPB) in predicting health behavior intention has proven its applicability to various health behaviors, such as condom uptake, HIV prevention, and contraception use in resource-limited settings. However, the effectiveness of the TPB framework in understanding refugee women’s intention to switch from short-acting contraceptives (SAC) to long-acting and reversible contraceptives (LARC) remains unclear. This study examined how the TPB predicts refugee women’s intention to switch from SAC to LARC. METHODS: This study is a nested component

Current hormonal contraceptive use predicts female extra-pair and dyadic sexual behavior: evidence based on Czech National Survey data.

Data from 1155 Czech women (493 using oral contraception, 662 non-users), obtained from the Czech National Survey of Sexual Behavior, were used to investigate evolutionary-based hypotheses concerning the predictive value of current oral contraceptive (OC) use on extra-pair and dyadic (in-pair) sexual behavior of coupled women. Specifically, the aim was to determine whether current OC use was associated with lower extra-pair and higher in-pair sexual interest and behavior, because OC use suppresses cyclical shifts in mating psychology that occur in normally cycling women. Zero-inflated Poisson

Clitoral vascularization and sexual behavior in young patients treated with drospirenone-ethinyl estradiol or contraceptive vaginal ring: a prospective, randomized, pilot study.

INTRODUCTION: Oral contraceptives (OC) are effective for birth control and have good cycle control and tolerability. However, the hormonal components could modify mood and libido. AIM: The aim of this study is to evaluate the genital vascular effects and sexual behavior of an OC containing 30 μg ethinyl estradiol and 3 mg drospirenone in comparison with a flexible combined contraceptive vaginal ring. METHODS: Forty women underwent a sonographic assessment of the clitoral anatomy and vascularization and were administered the McCoy Female Sexuality Questionnaire (MFSQ) and the Beck's Depressio

Menstrual Cycle and Hormonal Contraceptive-Dependent Changes in Intrinsic Connectivity of Resting-State Brain Networks Correspond to Behavioral Changes Due to Hormonal Status.

Menstrual cycle-dependent changes have been reported for a variety of functions, including cognition, attention, emotion, inhibition, and perception. For several of these functions, an effect of hormonal contraceptives has also been discussed. Cognitive, attentional, emotional, inhibitory, and perceptual functions have been linked to distinct intrinsic connectivity networks during the resting state. However, changes in resting-state connectivity across the menstrual cycle phase and due to hormonal contraceptive use have only been investigated in two selected networks and without controlling fo

Exploring the role of sex, sex steroids, menstrual cycle, and hormonal contraception use in visual working memory: Insights from behavioral and EEG analyses.

Sex hormones have been shown to influence cognitive and emotional processes, yet their effects on visual working memory (VWM) are poorly understood. This study aimed to investigate the relationship between VWM, sex, and female hormonal status in participants aged 18-35 years. We recruited 32 males (M) and 133 females, categorized into four groups: naturally cycling females in the early follicular (NCF, n = 33) and mid-luteal (NCL, n = 35) phases of the menstrual cycle, oral contraceptive (OC, n = 37), and intrauterine device users (IUD, n = 28). Participants completed a bilateral change detect

Cigarette smoking women of reproductive age who use oral contraceptives: results from the 2002 and 2004 behavioral risk factor surveillance systems.

BACKGROUND: Despite health warnings about the increased risk of cerebrovascular disease among women who smoke while using oral contraceptives (OCs), prior research suggests that OC use is still prevalent among women who smoke cigarettes. Our objective was to investigate the prevalence of OC use among cigarette smoking women of reproductive age in the United States. STUDY DESIGN: We extracted data from the 2002 and 2004 Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System surveys of 76,544 women between 18 and 44 years of age who reported using some form of contraception.
