OBJECTIVE: While an improved understanding of the epidemiology and outcomes of hormonal contraceptive use in persons with sickle cell disease is needed to better inform evidence-based guidelines, patterns of contraception use remain understudied. Our objective was to examine patterns of contraception use among patients with sickle cell disease and employer-sponsored insurance.
STUDY DESIGN: Our analyses utilized the Merative™ MarketScan® Commercial Database (2012-2019). The study included females 12-44 years meeting the study definition of sickle cell disease (presence of three ICD-9 or ICD-1

Although the twentieth century has seen great strides in the development of female contraception, not a single new agent has been introduced as an approved method for common use for male contraception. Condoms (considered uncomfortable by some) and vasectomy (a permanent invasive procedure) are the only options provided to men, leaving an undue burden on women to bear contraceptive responsibility. Significant developments have, however, been made with regard to hormonal and nonhormonal contraception, and minor, reversible, procedural contraception. This article reviews the currently available,

These Guidelines set down detailed provisions in accordance with which general physicians and clinics may provide advice on contraceptive methods. Annex 1 is entitled "Guidelines on counselling on contraception," and deals with the mode of operation, effectiveness, contraindications and side-effects of, and medical follow-up to the following methods of contraception: hormonal contraceptives; intrauterine devices; diaphragms; condoms; chemical agents (foam, jell, cream, etc.); and sterilization.

Five new oral contraceptives, classified as extended- or continuous-cycle oral contraceptives, have been approved by the United States Food and Drug Administration. These agents have various combinations of estrogen and progestin, and different effects on the length of women's menstrual cycles. Usually they shorten the duration of menses, decrease the frequency of menses to 4 times/year, or completely eliminate menses. These new oral contraceptives are given in the following regimens: 24 days followed by placebo for 4 days (24/4), 84 days followed by placebo for 7 days (84/7), or continuously

Currently approved male-directed contraceptive methods include condoms and vas occlusion. Vas occlusion is very effective but is intended to be non-reversible. Condoms have a relatively high failure rate, at least partially due to compliance problems and are not accepted by many couples. The only other male-oriented methods in clinical trials utilize the administration of testosterone alone or its combination with another gonadotropin-suppressing agent such as a progestin or a gonadotropin-releasing hormone antagonist. Studies published in the 1990s demonstrated that a testosterone-containing

Recent evidence on the importance of sexual history and sexually transmissible agents in cervical cancer has been reported. Case-control studies have frequently demonstrated increased risk of cervical cancer for women using oral contraceptives, while laboratory results have shown that vaginal spermicides inactivate various sexually transmissible agents. To determine the role of contraceptive use in cervical cancer, 153 cases of Maryland women with invasive cervical cancer and age, race, and residence-matched controls were interviewed in 1985, focusing on sexual history, health care utilization

Little is known about oncology provider recommendations regarding best practices in contraception use during cancer treatment and through survivorship for adolescent and young adult (AYA) cancer patients. This review examined the literature to identify related studies on contraception recommendations, counseling discussions, and methods of contraception in the AYA oncology population. A literature review was conducted using PubMed, including all peer-reviewed journals with no publication date exclusions. A systematic review of the literature was conducted using combinations of the following ph

Contraception counselling should be an integral part of any adolescent or adult congenital heart disease program. Both the cardiovascular safety and contraceptive efficacy of each contraceptive method should be considered for each cardiac condition. The method recommended should combine acceptability to the woman with the highest efficacy and safety profile. Agent with low dose estrogen combined with varying amounts of progestin referred to as combined oral contraceptives is one of the most effective contraception and is the most used in France. But the thrombogenicity of the estrogen componen

STUDY OBJECTIVE: Sugammadex, a novel neuromuscular blockade reversal agent, functions as a steroid binder postulated to decrease hormone exposure used within progestin-containing contraceptive medications. Thus, alternative non-medication contraceptive methods are recommended to prevent unplanned pregnancies. The study aims were to evaluate sugammadex use in adolescent females prescribed a progestin-containing contraceptive and positive pregnancy screening frequency. We hypothesized that sugammadex use is infrequent in this population and no pregnancy screens would be positive.

Three weeks after commencing oral contraception for the first time, a 26-year-old woman with a history of rheumatic carditis and chorea minor presented with sudden recurrence of hyperkinesis. Withdrawal of the contraceptive agent was followed by rapid remission of the hyperkinesis, which suggests a casual relationship between the contraceptive and this condition and an analogy between this case and so-called chorea gravidarum. A young non-pregnant woman presenting with chorea minor should be specifically questioned by ingestion of oral contraceptives. If there is a past history of rheumatic fe

The case of a patient with intrahepatic cholestasis, probably induced by an oral contraceptive agent, is reported. Initially, early primary biliary cirrhosis was suspected, but this diagnosis could not be verified either clinically or by immunological tests. Re-examination and re-evaluation of the liver biopsy revealed some eosinophilia and sinusoidal dilatation, changes indicative of drug-induced liver injury. The cholestasis gradually disappeared as indicated both biochemically and histologically, but the elevation of serum alkaline phosphatase levels persisted for some 10 years after termin

Surgical reproductive control remains the most widely used method for reproductive control in dogs and cats, but it requires anesthesia, trained personnel, surgical facilities, and post-operative care, which may limit its application in large-scale free-roaming animal populations. In males, orchidectomy also eliminates Leydig cell testosterone production, removes negative feedback on the hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal axis, and may contribute to persistent elevation of luteinizing hormone. These endocrine changes have increased interest in hormone-sparing contraceptive strategies that suppress

Venous thromboembolism (VTE) is a rare but serious complication of combined hormonal contraception. While the absolute risk of VTE is low in adolescents, thrombotic events in contraception users younger than the age of 20 years account for 5 to 10% of total contraception-related VTE events in population studies, because of the high frequency of contraception use in adolescents. An increased risk of VTE exists not only with oral contraceptives, but also the contraceptive patch and vaginal ring. Most adolescents who experience contraception-related VTE have additional transient or inherited thro

The development of steroid-based oral contraceptives had revolutionized the availability of contraceptive choice for women. In order to expand the contraceptive options for couples by developing an acceptable, safe and effective male contraceptive, scientists have been experimenting with various steroidal/non-steroidal regimens to suppress testicular sperm production. The non-availability of a long-acting androgen was a limiting factor in the development of a male contraceptive regimen since all currently tested anti-spermatogenic agents also concurrently decrease circulating testosterone leve

BACKGROUND: Tirzepatide is a dual glucagon-like peptide 1 (GLP-1) and glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide (GIP) receptor agonist (RA) whose mechanism of action leads to a greater effect of gastric emptying (GE) than typical GLP-1 RAs. After the first dose of tirzepatide, GE is most substantially delayed. The drug then undergoes tachyphylaxis after subsequent doses. Although data on GLP1-RAs have historically demonstrated a lack of impact on bioavailability of oral hormonal contraceptives, manufacturer recommendations for tirzepatide indicate an interaction exists.

The highest percentages of unintended pregnancies and the largest increases in births reported in the United States in recent years were in adolescents and in women more than 35 years of age. Increasing numbers of these women will require contraception to avoid unintended pregnancy. In adolescents the combined oral contraceptive agents protect fertility indirectly and exert favorable actions on menstrual dysfunction and certain hormone-related disorders such as acne and hirsutism. To avoid sexually transmitted disease, barrier protection should be used along with oral contraceptives until mutu

A significant unmet need for new contraceptive options for both women and men remains due to side-effect profiles, medical concerns, and the inconvenience of many currently available contraceptive products. Unfortunately, the development of novel nonsteroidal female contraceptive medicine has been stalled in the last couple of decades due to the lack of effective screening platforms. Drosophila utilizes conserved signaling pathways for follicle rupture, a final step in ovulation that is essential for female reproduction. Therefore, we explored the potential to use Drosophila as a model to scre

We report the case of a 28-year-old woman with a history of oral contraceptive use and the simultaneous occurrence of histologically proven hepatic adenoma and focal nodular hyperplasia. A review of the literature discloses that the simultaneous occurrence of these hepatic lesions is a rare event. Epidemiologic evidence suggests that hepatic adenomas are etiologically related to oral contraceptive use, whereas focal nodular hyperplasia does not seem to be caused by these agents. The finding of the two lesions in the same liver may represent the chance occurrence of two rare diseases.

Three women, aged 18, 31 and 36 years, presented with hypertension while taking oral contraceptives. Each patient had received antihypertensive drugs. Blood pressure returned to normal within weeks of cessation of oral contraceptives. Although the reduction in hormone content seems to have reduced the risk of oral contraceptive-induced hypertension, there is still an increased risk. As the prevalence of hypertension in women aged under 45 is low, the possibility that the hypertension is caused by contraceptives should be considered in women of childbearing age. Discontinuation may cause a sign

BACKGROUND: Erythema multiforme has been linked to numerous drugs and infectious agents. A link to oral contraceptive use has been reported in the past in the adult population but thus far has not been reported in children or adolescents.
CASE: We report the case of an 18-yr-old female who developed oral erosions consistent with erythema multiforme two and a half weeks after initiating therapy with an oral contraceptive agent. A thorough examination for other inciting factors was negative, and the lesions slowly resolved over the course of 3 weeks.
CONCLUSIONS: This case illustrates that ery
