[Weight gain due to hormonal contraception: myth or truth?].

Weight gain is one of the side effects often attributed to the use of hormonal contraception. Concern about weight gain can hinder particularly young women to use a safe contraceptive method or may be a reason for early discontinuation. In the following review, we present studies examining the influence of different contraceptive methods on weight change and discuss the results and methodological problems. During use of hormonal contraceptives, weight fluctuates by about 3 kg over an observation interval from 6 to 24 months. Only in a subgroup of Depo Provera users is the increase in weight hi

[Contraceptives, HIV, and other sexually transmitted diseases].

The large majority of women who acquire Human Immuno-Deficiency Virus (HIV) and other sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) are in their childbearing years and are current or potential users of contraceptive methods. Certain STDs augment women's risk for HIV due to damage which these diseases produce in the integrity of the epithelial lining of the vagina and the vulva. There also exists evidence that some contraceptive methods, such as the intrauterine device and certain hormonal products, may increase the risk of HIV and other STDs. Condoms and spermicides offer good levels of protection agai

Evaluation of the virus permeability of a new condom for women.

The authors tested a polyurethane women's condom for permeability to the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and cytomegalovirus (CMV) using an artificial intercourse model. They did not detect viral leakage in three trials for each virus. Use of this device, which can be controlled by the woman, may reduce HIV and CMV infection.

ACOG Committee Opinion No. 735 Summary: Adolescents and Long-Acting Reversible Contraception: Implants and Intrauterine Devices.

The phenomenon of adolescent childbearing is complex and far reaching, affecting not only the adolescents but also their children and their community. The prevalence and public health effect of adolescent pregnancy reflect complex structural social problems and an unmet need for acceptable and effective contraceptive methods in this population. In 2006-2010, 82% of adolescents at risk of unintended pregnancy were currently using contraception, but only 59% used a highly effective method, including any hormonal method or intrauterine device. Long-acting reversible contraceptives (LARC) have hig

Trends and determinants of modern contraceptive use among sexually active adolescent females in Bangladesh: Evidence of four national surveys (2011-2022).

BACKGROUND: Modern contraceptive methods (MCM) reduce the risk of unintended pregnancy and short birth intervals. Despite growing attention to reproductive health, the factors influencing the use of MCM among sexually active adolescent females in Bangladesh remain underexplored. The objectives of this study are to examine trends in the use of MCM and to identify the significant factors associated with the usage of MCM among sexually active adolescent females in Bangladesh. METHODS: In this study, we used secondary data from the 2011, 2014, 2017-18, and 2022 rounds of the Bangladesh Demographic

Obesity and hormonal contraception: an overview and a clinician's practical guide.

BACKGROUND: The growing prevalence of obesity among the fertile female population poses a considerable problem to contraceptive providers. Obese women, who are more at risk for venous thromboembolism and cardiovascular events due to their condition, might be at an even higher risk of developing thromboembolic events when on medical contraception. Combined hormonal contraceptives might be less effective in obese women and may lead to unacceptable metabolic side effects for this population. In addition, the lack of safety data for weight loss drugs and the higher risk for complications during an

[Choice of contraception in relation to sexual activity among younger women in Nuuk/Godthåb (Grönland) and in Nykøbing Falster (Danmark). A population-based cross-sectional study among 1,247 women].

Contraceptive habits in relation to sexual activity were investigated in a population-based cross-sectional investigation. A total of 661 women from Nykøbing Falster and 586 women from Nuuk/Godthåb in Greenland participated. The women, who were in the age group 20-39 years, were selected at random from the census and all underwent a personal interview. Both in Godthåb and in Nykøbing Falster a "non-barrier" method of contraception was the commonest method employed, regardless of the number of sexual partners. In Godthåb, the majority had thus employed IUDs and in Nykøbing Falster, oral contrac

Ectopic Intrauterine Device Revealed by Ureteral Colic in a 37-Week Pregnant Woman: Case Report.

Copper T intrauterine devices (IUDs) are a popular long-acting reversible contraceptive method. The most common reasons for contraceptive failure are expulsion and extrauterine migration. We report a case of a 28-year-old female, G13P3, 37 weeks pregnant, who presented to the hospital for left abdominal flank pain. The patient was admitted for treatment of left ureteral colic. The woman went into labour, and Caesarean Section was performed due to foetal distress. During the surgery, an inspection of the peritoneal cavity revealed a copper IUD embedded in the granulous tissue located in the lef

CASE REPORT: RETRIEVAL OF AN INTRA-UTERINE CONTRACEPTIVE DEVICE PENETRATING THROUGH THE WALL OF THE RECTUM.

A Copper T intrauterine contraceptive device (IUCD) is a commonly employed method of reversible contraception for women. Its use has been associated with complications such as bleeding, perforation and migration to adjacent organs or peritoneum. Uterine wall erosion and subsequent perforation by an IUCD is not unusual; however the subsequent intraperitoneal migration, to and perforation of the rectum is uncommon. We present a case of 31-year-old female with an IUCD migrating through the uterus possibly into the peritoneal cavity and subsequently eroding into the posterior rectal wall. It was r
