Psychosocial Factors Associated With Postpartum Contraceptive Method Use After an Unintended Birth.

OBJECTIVE: To examine whether depression, intimate partner violence, and other psychosocial stressors were independently associated with effectiveness level of postpartum contraception among women who recently had an unintended birth. METHODS: We analyzed cross-sectional data from PRAMS (the Pregnancy Risk Assessment Monitoring System) to identify women who had an unintended birth between 2012 and 2015. The effectiveness level of the contraceptive method was coded into one of five categories based on the postpartum contraceptive method that women were using: none, less effective (withdrawal,

The 2002 Canadian Contraception Study: part 1.

OBJECTIVES: To investigate the contraception and sexual health-related awareness, attitudes, and practices of a representative sample of Canadian women of childbearing age. METHODS: A self-report survey was mailed to a national sample of 3345 women, aged 15 to 44 years, who were members of a pre-recruited market research panel. Survey questions and methodology were similar to 3 previous Canadian Contraception Studies, allowing for description of current patterns of behaviours and beliefs and comparison of trends over time. RESULTS: Of 3345 women contacted, 1582 returned completed surveys, fo

Factors associated with recurrent bacterial vaginosis.

OBJECTIVE: To determine whether menstrual abnormalities, multiple personal behaviors and some contraceptive methods, all of which have been described as potential causes of single episodes of bacterial vaginosis (BV), are associated with recurrent bacterial vaginosis (RBV). STUDY DESIGN: This was a retrospective, case-controlled study performed in an urban setting. Women with RBV and matched controls were mailed a survey that included multiple questions about potential risk factors for BV. Four-to-one matching of age groups was performed, with 28 RBV cases matched to 112 controls. RESULTS: A

Contraception in the adolescent patient.

Having presented an overview of the available methods of contraception, the authors present one approach to prescribing contraceptives based on their experience. First, adolescent patients in our practice are discouraged from engaging in sexual intercourse. Abstinence is the only fail-safe method of contraception and provides benefits both emotionally and physically (i.e., prevention from sexually transmitted diseases and unwanted pregnancies). If the adolescent plans to be sexually active, however, she is encouraged to select some form of hormonal contraception, namely Norplant, Depo-Provera,

Adolescent contraception: an update.

Increased adolescent sexual activity in the past decade has resulted in corresponding increases in pregnancy, childbirth, and abortion, as well as a changing spectrum of sexually transmitted diseases. Contraceptive use in this age group remains limited and is subject to developmental, peer, family, and cultural influences. The most appropriate contraceptive methods may differ among adolescents when compared with older parous women based upon such factors as efficacy, availability, cost, side effects, reversibility, and the need for preplanning. This review updates changes in patterns of contra

Prevalence and predictors of use of long-term and short-acting reversible contraceptives among women of reproductive age in Wakiso and Hoima districts, Uganda: A cross-sectional study.

Modern contraceptive use has increased globally, but unmet needs persist in low- and middle-income countries. This study in Uganda aimed to examine the prevalence and factors influencing the use of short-acting reversible contraceptives (SARC) like pills and long-term methods such as intrauterine devices. Limited evidence exists on the use of SARC and long-term methods in Uganda. Data from the Africa Medical and Behavioural Sciences Organization (AMBSO) Population Health Surveillance (APHS) in Hoima and Wakiso districts were analysed. Among the 1642 women aged 15-49 years, the prevalence of mo

Current concepts in contraception.

BACKGROUND: Worldwide, contraceptive use has increased substantially over the past two decades. The increased demand for wider choices of contraceptive methods has resulted in extensive research and rigorous clinical trials. This has led to improvements on existing contraceptive methods and also the development of several new, more effective and acceptable methods with fewer side effects. Thus, this article presents a review of existing literature on recent developments on existing contraceptive methods. It also reviews recently developed contraceptive methods currently in use worldwide. METH

Contraceptive use Among Hispanic Women Living in Puerto Rico.

OBJECTIVE: To assess the contraceptive methods used by sexually active Hispanic women living in Puerto Rico. METHODS: From October 2016 through February 2018, 518 patients completed a self-administered questionnaire. The inclusion criteria were being over the age of 21 and having visited San Juan City Hospital or University District Hospital. The results were analyzed using descriptive statistics and a 2-sample t test, where P < .05 was considered significant. RESULTS: A total of 518 participants completed the questionnaire. Of the 518, 413 (81.0%) reported having used at least 1 form of con

Proteomic analyses reveal lower expression of TEX40 and ATP6V0A2 proteins related to calcium ion entry and acrosomal acidification in asthenozoospermic males.

AIMS: Idiopathic nature of male infertility disorder needs to be investigated by different horizons of molecular biology for its treatment and to device male contraceptive. Further, it can also aid in advancement of assisted reproductive technology (ART), as nowadays the failure and disquiets of ART are consistent. Herein, we have attempted to find out proteins responsible for male infertility by comparing proteome profile of sperms collected from normal control and asthenozoospermic (AS) males. MAIN METHODS: Differential proteome profiles were studied by 2-dimensional differential gel electr

Adolescent pregnancy in the United States: a review and recommendations for clinicians and research needs.

Adolescent pregnancy, often unplanned and unwanted, has a negative impact on the physical, emotional, educational, and economic condition of the pregnant teenager. Forty percent of the one million adolescents who became pregnant in 1986 chose abortion, and, of the remainder, 61% were unmarried. Teenage mothers in greater numbers and at younger ages are opting to keep and raise their children. In 1987 over $19 billion in federal monies were expended on families begun when the mother was a teenager. The preferred approach to this problem is prevention of teenage pregnancy rather than abortion, w

Fertility following discontinuation of different methods of fertility control.

The possibility of permanent sterility following use of modern contraceptive agents is a concept which causes great concern amongst members of the lay public. However, a thorough review of the literature gives a great deal of reassurance on this topic. The combined oral contraceptive pill causes slight delay, and the injectable contraceptives a moderate delay in the return of fertility following discontinuation, but there is no evidence of a greater likelihood of permanent infertility than in the normal population. The progestogen-only minipill should be risk-free, but final data are lacking.

The effect of long-acting reversible contraception on rapid repeat pregnancy in adolescents: a review.

Repeat pregnancy within 2 years of a previous birth or abortion occurs in approximately 35% of recently pregnant female adolescents. The majority of these pregnancies are classified as unintended with about half ending in births and the remainder in abortions. Rapid repeat pregnancy (RRP) is associated with increased maternal and neonatal morbidity and continues a cycle of economic deprivation for young women and their families. Immediately following a pregnancy, most young women report an intention to avoid pregnancy in the near future, but many change their minds or become ambivalent within

Choice of birth control methods among European women and the role of partners and providers.

BACKGROUND: The choice of a birth control method is influenced by sociocultural and personal factors. We explored the perceived influences in women's choice of a birth control method in five European countries (Germany, France, the UK, Romania and Sweden), where contraception is widely used. STUDY DESIGN: This is a cross-sectional study of 1137 randomly selected women aged 18-49 years. An anonymous, 31-item questionnaire related to birth control methods was used. Logistic regression was used to identify variables associated with partner participation in choice of a contraceptive. RESULTS: Or

Family planning, sexually transmitted diseases and contraceptive choice: a literature update--Part I.

Couples who use contraceptives not only protect themselves against unwanted pregnancies, but also may reduce their risk of becoming infected with a sexually transmitted disease (STD). No currently available method, however, is highly effective in protecting simultaneously against pregnancy and infection. Thus, couples who place high priority on minimizing both risks may have to use two methods. The need for contraceptive methods that provide effective protection against both pregnancy and STDs has been intensified by the HIV epidemic, but progress has been slowed by the lack of integration bet

Contraceptive failure in the United States.

This review provides an update of previous estimates of first-year probabilities of contraceptive failure for all methods of contraception available in the United States. Estimates are provided of probabilities of failure during typical use (which includes both incorrect and inconsistent use) and during perfect use (correct and consistent use). The difference between these two probabilities reveals the consequences of imperfect use; it depends both on how unforgiving of imperfect use a method is and on how hard it is to use that method perfectly. These revisions reflect new research on contrac

Safer Conception and Family Planning Knowledge, Attitudes, and Practices Among Postpartum Women with HIV in Rural South Africa.

INTRODUCTION: With the help of safer conception strategies (SCS), women with HIV (WHIV) can achieve their reproductive goals while minimizing the risk of transmission to their partners or infants. However, interpregnancy intervals of at least 24 months are recommended to optimize maternal and infant health outcomes, so postpartum WHIV need to use contraception to delay subsequent pregnancies. Understanding safer conception and family planning knowledge, attitudes, and practices among WHIV is key to tailoring family planning policy and intervention development in regions with high HIV prevalenc
