BACKGROUND: The combined oral contraceptives are one of the most prescribed medicines. Across the years they have given to more than 60 million women of the whole world a suitable method for the highly reliable and effective natal control. The oral contraceptives are different from other medicines; principally they are not in use for controlling any disease and have the potential of giving advantages.
OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the control of the cycle, tolerability and acceptance of an oral contraceptive of ultralow dose with gestodene (60 microg) and ethinylestradiol (15 microg) in a populatio

This systematic review examines evidence regarding when during the menstrual cycle a woman can initiate combined oral contraceptive (COC) use and what can be done if a woman misses COCs. We searched the MEDLINE and EMBASE databases for articles published from 1966 to March 2005 related to COC initiation and to the effects of late or missed COCs. We identified 11 studies related to COC initiation and 25 studies related to the effects of missed pills. Evidence from these studies suggested that taking hormonally active pills for 7 consecutive days prevents normal ovulation and that initiating COC

BACKGROUND: Concern about estrogen-related adverse effects has led to progressive reductions in the estrogen dose in combination oral contraceptives (COCs). However, reducing the amount of estrogen to improve safety also could result in decreased contraceptive effectiveness and unacceptable changes in bleeding patterns.
OBJECTIVES: To test the hypothesis that COCs containing </=20 mcg ethinyl estradiol (EE) perform similarly as those containing >20 mcg in terms of contraceptive effectiveness, bleeding patterns, discontinuation, and side effects.
SEARCH STRATEGY: We searched computerized data

The risk of breast cancer in relation to use of oral contraceptives was evaluated using data from a hospital-based case-control study from Northern Italy on 1517 cases below age 60 and 1351 controls admitted for acute diseases unrelated to any of the known or potential risk factors for breast cancer. The multivariate relative risk for ever vs. never users was 1.3 (95% confidence interval = 1.0-1.7). However, the risk was not related to duration of use: indeed the highest risk was observed among short-term users (less than 2 years), and the point estimate was 0.9 among users for 5 years or more

IMPORTANCE: Previous studies suggest endogenous ovarian hormones significantly increase binge-eating (BE) risk in females. Approximately 85% of women use combined oral contraceptives (COCs) that mimic the riskiest hormonal milieu for BE (ie, elevated estradiol and progesterone postovulation). The effects of COCs on BE risk remain unknown.
OBJECTIVE: To examine the associations of COCs with BE.
DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This population-based longitudinal survey study collected daily reports of COC active vs inactive pill use and BE across 49 consecutive days in women from the Michiga

OBJECTIVE: To assess the relationship of adherence and pregnancy in participants using an estetrol and drospirenone combined oral contraceptive.
METHODS: We performed a secondary analysis for which we pooled data from two parallel, multicenter, phase 3 trials (United States and Canada, Europe and Russia) that enrolled participants 16-50 years of age to receive estetrol 15 mg and drospirenone 3 mg in a 24 hormone and four placebo pills regimen for up to 13 cycles. Participants reported pill intake, sexual intercourse, and other contraceptive use on paper diaries. We limited this efficacy analy

BACKGROUND: Over the last 50 years, there has been intense interest in the type of progestin used in combined oral contraceptives (COC) in an attempt to exploit novel properties and minimize adverse events. At the same time, the dose of synthetic estrogen, ethinylestradiol, in COC pills has been reduced to minimize risks for ischemic stroke, myocardial infarction, and venous thromboembolism. New formulations, including extended-cycle or continuous-use COCs or those that use a natural estrogen, estradiol, may offer improvements over their predecessors.
METHODS: A Medline search was performed t

This review details the characteristic features of three new progestogens which soon will be available in low-dose combination oral contraceptive agents in the United States. Available data suggest that desogestrel, gestodene, and norgestimate are extremely potent progestogens with few androgenic side effects. The smaller changes in lipids induced by these progestogens seem to confer some advantage to the use of preparations containing one of these agents. Whether this advantage is also present clinically remains to be determined.

The risk of epithelial ovarian cancer in relation to the use of combination oral contraceptives was evaluated in a case-control study of women younger than 60 years. Combination oral contraceptives were used by 35 (26%) of 136 cases and 187 (35%) of 539 controls. The relative risk estimate for combination oral contraceptive use was 0.6 (95% confidence interval, 0.4 to 0.9). The reduction in risk appeared to persist for as long as ten years after use had ceased and to be greater for longer durations of use, but these results were not statistically significant. The findings were not explained by

BACKGROUND: Dysmenorrhoea (painful menstrual cramps) is common and a major cause of pain in women. Combined oral contraceptives (OCPs) are often used in the management of primary dysmenorrhoea, but there is a need for reporting the benefits and harms. Primary dysmenorrhoea is defined as painful menstrual cramps without pelvic pathology.
OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the benefits and harms of combined oral contraceptive pills for the management of primary dysmenorrhoea.
SEARCH METHODS: We used standard, extensive Cochrane search methods. The latest search date 28 March 2023.

Contraception is one of the keystones of reproductive health. The availability of effective contraception has helped to change dramatically the structure of the world's population during the last 50 years, through a demographic transition involving lower fertility rates and longer survival. As the transition evolves more slowly in developing countries, different effects on population structures contribute to civil strains. Oral contraception (OC) is an extremely effective method of contraception that also confers health benefits beyond pregnancy prevention. Notable effects on the reproductive

The COCP is a safe form of contraception for the majority of women. The challenge is to identify the women who have risk factors that make the use of COCP less safe. This approach is summarised by a recent consensus statement from an international conference on evidence based prescribing of COCPs. This states that 'current evidence suggests only two prerequisites for the safe provision of COCPs: a careful personal and family medical history with particular attention to cardiovascular risk factors, and an accurate blood pressure measurement'.
