Higher substance use is associated with low executive control neural activity and higher inflammation.

Individuals with substance use problems show lower executive control and alterations in prefrontal brain systems supporting emotion regulation and impulse control. A separate literature suggests that heightened inflammation also increases risk for substance use, in part, through targeting brain systems involved in executive control. Research on neural and inflammatory signaling in substance use, however, has occurred in parallel. Drawing on recent neuroimmune network models, we used fMRI to examine the relationships between executive control-related brain activity (as elicited by an n-back wor

Catechol-O-methyltransferase activity in individuals with substance use disorders: a case control study.

BACKGROUND: Impulsivity and substance use disorders (SUD) have been both associated with changes in dopaminergic processes. In this study, we intended to evaluate the dopaminergic function in imprisoned SUD offenders through the determination of s-COMT activity. METHODS: The study included 46 male individuals from a Portuguese penal institution. The participants were assessed through a battery of standardised instruments: Psychopathy Checklist-Revised (PCL-R), Barratt Impulsivity Scale Version 11 (BIS-11), and the European version of the Addiction Severity Index (EuropASI). In addition, s-COM

The impact of CARA mandates on nurse practitioner controlled substance prescribing in Oregon: a cohort study.

BACKGROUND: In 2017, the United States Comprehensive Addiction and Recovery Act (CARA) expanded authorization to prescribe buprenorphine for opioid use disorder (OUD) to nurse practitioners (NPs). Compared to physicians, NPs were required to complete 16 additional hours of training on controlled substance prescribing before a buprenorphine waiver application. As this differential additional education mandate was seen as a potential barrier, we evaluated the impact of this requirement on both NP waiver acquisition and prescribing of controlled substances, comparing NPs who obtained waivers to t

Method Validation and Assessment of Hazardous Substances and Quality Control Characteristics in Traditional Fruit Wines.

The presence of potentially hazardous substances in fruit wines poses a threat for human health. However, the management standards and specifications of hazardous substances contained within various types of fruit wines are currently insufficient. The aim of this study was to analyze hazardous substances (cyanide, acetaldehyde, and ethyl carbamate) and quality control characteristics (pH, titratable acidity, sulfur dioxide, and diacetyl) in seven different types of fruit wines. The pH levels and titratable acidity varied between fruit wine types. In all fruit wines, sulfur dioxide (SO2) was wi

Communication of health risk in substance-dependent populations: A systematic review of randomised controlled trials.

ISSUES: Individuals with substance use problems are at greater risk of chronic diseases due to their unhealthy lifestyle behaviours (e.g. alcohol use, smoking, physical inactivity, poor nutrition). There is increasing evidence that health risk communication is crucial in improving risk perception and knowledge of chronic diseases, and both factors are associated with health behaviour change. The aim of this systematic review is to provide a comprehensive overview of the current state of evidence on health risk communication on people with substance use problems. APPROACH: A systematic search

The Role of Working Memory for Cognitive Control in Anorexia Nervosa versus Substance Use Disorder.

Prefrontal cortex executive functions, such as working memory (WM) interact with limbic processes to foster impulse control. Such an interaction is referred to in a growing body of publications by terms such as cognitive control, cognitive inhibition, affect regulation, self-regulation, top-down control, and cognitive-emotion interaction. The rising trend of research into cognitive control of impulsivity, using various related terms reflects the importance of research into impulse control, as failure to employ cognitions optimally may eventually result in mental disorder. Against this backgrou

Difficulties in emotional regulation and substance use disorders: a controlled family study of bipolar adolescents.

BACKGROUND: Self-regulatory mechanisms appear etiologically operant in the context of both substance use disorders (SUD) and bipolar disorder (BD), however, little is known about the role of deficits in emotional self-regulation (DESR) as it relates to SUD in context to mood dysregulation. To this end, we examined to what extent DESR was associated with SUD in a high-risk sample of adolescents with and without BD. METHODS: 203 families were assessed with a structured psychiatric interview. Using the Child Behavior Checklist (CBCL), a subject was considered to have DESR when he or she had an a

[Screening, referring and counseling of adolescents for substance abuse. A randomized controlled study on 2120 students].

OBJECTIVES: The DEP-ADO assessment questionnaire defines three alcohol- and drug-related risk levels: low (green light), intermediate (yellow light) and high risk (red light). Our study sought to evaluate whether a DEP-ADO systematic screening by school nurses and physicians improves referring to specialized addiction consultations. METHOD: Randomized controlled study with allocation of subjects by matched pairs of school classes: 1045 adolescents received a group information; 1075 adolescents were met individually and filled in the questionnaire; then either they received a risk reduction or

Brief intervention in substance-use among adolescent psychiatric patients: a randomized controlled trial.

Objective of the study is to assess the efficacy of a brief motivational enhancement intervention in adolescents referred to psychiatric treatment who reported substance-use. In a sample of adolescents (n = 237) consecutively admitted to a psychiatry department, 143 were identified as users. Subjects were randomly allocated to one of two groups: an experimental group that received a brief intervention aimed at increasing their awareness of the risks of substance-use, or a control group. All subjects received standard treatment according to the primary diagnosis. Structured questionnaires asses

Social networks and social control of probationers with co-occurring mental and substance abuse problems.

Probationers with co-occurring mental and substance abuse problems (PCPs) are both subject to considerable social control, and at high risk of probation failure. In this study, we screened 601 probationers for symptoms, interviewed 82 identified PCPs about their relationships, and then followed these PCPs for eight months to record treatment nonadherence and other probation violations. First, PCPs' social networks were small, heavily comprised of professionals and opposing forces who engaged in risky behavior, and saturated with pressure to adhere to treatment. Second, the size and composition

On the role of substance P and serotonin in the pyloric motor control. An experimental study in cat and rat.

Vagal nerve stimulation caused a release of substance P (SP) and serotonin (5-HT) into the feline portal circulation. Both substances are gut spasmogens and were demonstrated in gut nerves by immunocytochemistry. In anesthetized cats gastric and pyloric motility were studied simultaneously at stimulation with SP or 5-HT via the splenic artery or at stimulation of the extrinsic nerves to evaluate their role in the motor control of these regions. The vagally induced pyloric contraction was noncholinergic and nonadrenergic but sensitive to hexamethonium in contrast to the cholinergic gastric cont

A relational agent for treating substance use in adults: A randomized controlled trial with a psychoeducational comparator.

BACKGROUND: Highly accessible and scalable, digital mental health interventions can reduce barriers associated with traditional treatment. Woebot for Substance Use Disorders (W-SUD) is a smartphone application in development that uses Woebot, a guided self-help relational agent intended to offer support to track and reduce problematic substance use. Two formative studies supported W-SUD's feasibility, acceptability, and efficacy to reduce substance use at end-of-treatment (EOT). OBJECTIVES: In a randomized trial with a 1-month post-treatment follow-up, we aimed to evaluate W-SUD's efficacy in

Controlled Substance Diversion Prevention Program Strategies: One Program's Key Takeaways for Nursing.

Substance use disorder is a chronic, relapsing disease for which all those living with this mental health condition deserve access to safe, ethical, appropriate care and treatment. Drug diversion, a possible consequence of substance use disorder, puts nurses, patients, organizations, and the public at significant risk. A review of the literature indicates that controlled substance diversion prevention programs are essential to drug diversion prevention efforts, education is key to promoting a culture of safety and encouraging staff to speak up, and alternative-to-discipline approaches should b

Impairments and recovery of neurocognitive control and cardiac vagal regulation in males with substance use disorders.

Previous studies have indicated that neurocognitive control in people with substance use disorders (SUDs) tends to be impaired. Impaired cardiac vagal regulation may underlie the disrupted self-regulatory and emotional processes in people with SUDs. However, it is unclear whether both neurocognitive control (indexed by intraindividual reaction time variability, IIRTV) and cardiac vagal regulation (indexed by resting respiratory sinus arrhythmia, RSA) are impaired and whether they can recover after abstinence. This study examined whether both neurocognitive control and cardiac vagal regulation
