Leishmania chagasi, the agent of visceral leishmaniasis in dogs in the Americas has a tropism to the male genital system, particularly the epididymis, prepuce, and glans penis, resulting in shedding of Leishmania in the semen. The goal of this study was to verify the possibility of venereal transmission of L. chagasi. Twelve Leishmania-free bitches, housed in the absence of the insect vector, copulated with multiple naturally infected dogs that were shedding Leishmania in the semen. PCR analysis of serially collected ejaculates indicated that shedding of Leishmania in the semen is intermittent

Previous experiments showed that following acquisition of an association between a terry-cloth object conditioned stimulus (CS) and a live female unconditioned stimulus (US), male quail increased the frequency of their copulations with the inanimate CS during subsequent CS-alone (extinction) trials. The present experiment was conducted to identify the potential factors responsible for this unexpected increase in conditioned sexual behavior during extinction. A total of 57 naïve male quail were given pairings of a terry-cloth CS with a live female during acquisition. A total of 36 of these quai

The evolution of laterality, that is the biased use of laterally paired, morphologically symmetrical organs, has attracted the interest of researchers from a variety of disciplines. It is, however, difficult to quantify the fitness benefits of laterality because many organs, such as human hands, possess multimodal functions. Males of the earwig Labidura riparia (Insecta: Dermaptera: Labiduridae) have morphologically similar laterally paired penises, only one of which is used for inseminating the female during a single copulation bout, and thus provide a rare opportunity to address how selectio

An important aim of organic animal production is to allow natural animal behaviour. Regarding reproduction techniques, artificial insemination is permitted but natural mating is preferred. The outdoor multi-sire system, where the sows are placed in large paddocks with a group of boars, is one example of a service system, which complies well with the organic ideals of facilitating natural animal behavior. However, very little knowledge is available about such system. Seven groups of in total of 47 sows and 31 boars were observed to study the mating behavior in an outdoor multi-sire mating syste

Llamas are considered to be reflex ovulators. However, semen from these animals is reported to be rich in ovulation-inducing factor(s), one of which has been identified as nerve growth factor (NGF). These findings suggest that ovulation in llamas may be elicited by chemical signals contained in semen instead of being mediated by neural signals. The present study examines this notion. Llamas displaying a preovulatory follicle were assigned to four groups: group 1 received an intrauterine infusion (IUI) of PBS; group 2 received an IUI of seminal plasma; group 3 was mated to a male whose urethra

Drosophila melanogaster is a widely used animal model in human diseases and to date it has not been applied to the study of the impact of tobacco use on human sexual function. Hence, this report examines the effects of different concentrations of cigarette smoke extract (CSE) exposure on the size and sexual behavior of D. melanogaster. Wild-type flies were held in vials containing CSE-infused culture media at concentrations of 10%, 25%, and 50% for three days, and their offspring were reared under the same conditions before measuring their body size and mating behavior. CSE exposure during dev

Mating in the marsupial genus Antechinus is a synchronous annual event that is characterized by monoestry in females and abrupt postmating mortality in males. Male semelparity (multiple copulations during a single breeding season per lifetime) is often assumed to occur as a consequence of the intense mating effort expended by males in the rut, but the forces selecting for this remain elusive. Here, we investigate selection in male brown antechinus, Antechinus stuartii, and test two hypotheses for the evolution of semelparity: intermale competition and sperm competition. If intermale competitio

The t-complex on mouse chromosome 17 results in transmission ratio distortion in males heterozygous for complete haplotypes, and sterility in those homozygous for semi-lethal or doubly heterozygous for complementing lethal haplotypes. This sterility is due to inability of spermatozoa to fertilize. The haplotype th7 is an unusual laboratory-derived haplotype, postulated to carry a small duplication of t chromatin. Males heterozygous for th7 show a new form of sterility, apparently due to failure to form copulation plugs during mating. This is accompanied by a strong propensity to acute urinary

WAG/Rij rats are genetically selected animals that model absence epilepsy in rats. Ultrasonic vocalizations and sexual behavior - both ethologically relevant markers of reward system functioning - are poorly described in this strain. The aim of our experiment was to investigate reward-dependent precontact 50-kHz vocalizations (PVs) and copulatory behavior as well as the effects of opioid receptor treatment on such behaviors in sexually experienced WAG/Rij males and rats from two control strains: Sprague-Dawley and Crl: Han Wistar. We analyzed the effects of the opioid receptor antagonist naltr

The aim of the study was to test if it is possible to induce complete copulatory behavior in castrated Arctic foxes (Alopex lagopus) of both sexes for the purpose of other experiments. Two groups of castrated, sexually experienced Arctic foxes, four pairs in Experiment 1 (a pilot study) and eight pairs in Experiment 2, were treated with different regimes of hormone (estrogens and progesterone in females, testosterone in males). The animals were than tested for copulatory behavior. Nine out of 12 castrated bitches and 10 out of 12 castrated males displayed copulatory behavior during the season

Sexual conflict arises from differences in reproductive interests between the sexes. We allowed the female harvestman Phalangium opilio to sequentially mate with two different males to examine female sexual receptivity in this species. Virgin females were more sexually receptive than non-virgins. Males exhibited a high interest in repeated copulations with the same female, often engaging in aggressive behaviours such as biting and reversed sexual cannibalism. Fellatio, a behaviour in which females lick the male's penis, was observed in 44% of trials and was associated with female unwillingness

In gynandromorphs of Drosophila, a detailed examination was made of the association between male courtship behavior and the chromosomal genotype of various parts of the central nervous system. Mosaic flies that behave as males repeatedly show a shorter courtship than normal males. If there is to be male behavior, the posterior dorsal brain must be haplo-X on at least one side for occurrence of the early courtship events. Tapping, following of females and wing extension. Licking (proboscis extension) has nearly the same focus but is submissive; that is, male tissue must be present in both left

Mating performance requires complex motor skills and inter-individual synchronization, yet the developmental pathways of copulatory competency remain poorly understood. Reverse mounting, where females mount males, is integrated into the behavioural toolkits of various monomorphic, long-lived birds, but its adaptive function remains debated. Using a 35-year demographic dataset of a wild griffon vulture (Gyps fulvus) population, we tested whether reverse mounting functions as a mechanism of 'sexual tutoring' during early reproductive life. Longitudinal observations of individuals marked as nestl

Male and female stump-tailed macaques (Macaca arctoides) form close relationships akin to human friendships. Oxytocin and vasopressin modulate these and other social relationships and reproductive behavior and physiology in various mammal species. Besides the behavioral effects of oxytocin, this hormone plays an essential role in the ejaculatory process, favoring sperm transport upward the female reproductive tract. Therefore, we investigated the influence of friendships on postcopulatory serum levels of oxytocin and vasopressin in the stump-tailed macaque (Macaca arctoides). In addition, we s

Lateralized courtship and mating behaviors in the Asian corn borer (Ostrinia furnacalis (Guenee)) play a key role in reproductive performance, yet their vulnerability to sublethal stressors remains poorly understood. Here, we investigated the effects of sublethal cyclosporin A (CsA) exposure on lateralized courtship behavior and reproductive performance. Adult males and females were assigned to 4 mating groups-unexposed males × exposed females, exposed males × unexposed females, exposed males × exposed females, and unexposed males × unexposed females and were fed diets containing sublethal con

Targeted disruption of the soluble adenylyl cyclase (ADCY10; sAC) gene results in male-specific sterility without affecting spermatogenesis, mating behavior, or spermatozoa morphology and count; however, it dramatically impairs sperm motility and prevents capacitation. These phenotypes were identified in sperm from sAC null mice surgically extracted from the epididymis and studied in vitro. Epididymal sperm are dormant, and never exposed to physiological activators in semen or the female reproductive tract. To study sAC null sperm under conditions which more closely resemble natural fertilizat

Whales, dolphins, and porpoises have unusual vaginal folds of unknown function(s) that are hypothesized to play an important role in sexual selection. The potential function of vaginal folds was assessed by testing the mechanical properties of common bottlenose dolphin (Tursiops truncatus) reproductive tract tissues in 6 different regions and across age classes in post-mortem specimens. We assessed the regional (local) and overall effective elastic modulus of tissues using indentation and tensile tests, respectively. We explore the non-linear mechanical response of biological tissues, which ar

Lucilia sericata is well known for causing myiasis in humans, livestock, pets and wildlife. It also vectors microbial pathogens, including paratuberculosis agents. This species can be exploited in maggot therapy to treat necrotic wounds, particularly those infected by multidrug-resistant pathogens. Despite its high medical and veterinary importance, our knowledge about its courtship and mating behavior is still limited. In this study, we quantified the courtship and mating behavior of L. sericata, shedding light on the potential impact of lateralization of selected behavioral traits during sex

BACKGROUND: The sand fly Phlebotomus papatasi is an Old World vector of Leishmania major, the etiologic agent of zoonotic cutaneous leishmaniasis. This study describes the courtship behaviour of P. papatasi and compares it with that of Lutzomyia longipalpis, the New World vector of visceral leishmaniasis. Understanding the details of courtship behaviour in P. papatasi may help us to understand the role of sex pheromones in this important vector.
RESULTS: P. papatasi courtship was found to start with the female touching the male, leading him to begin abdomen bending and wing flapping. Followin
