BACKGROUND: Before coronary evaluation by modern imaging techniques was feasible, premorbid diagnoses of coronary artery anomalies (CAAs) were usually made fortuitously by invasive coronary angiography (ICA). However, this technique is limited by its invasive and projectional nature. Coronary magnetic resonance angiography (CMRA) and multi-slice computed tomography (MSCT) broadened clinical information by enabling visualisation of the coronary arteries in their anatomical environment.
METHODS: This case series visualises and reviews anomalous coronary artery from the opposite sinus (ACAOS) an

AIMS: Automated image acquisition in combination with a 2D image navigator allows for an improved spatial resolution of coronary magnetic resonance angiography (CMRA) that is approaching that of coronary computed tomography angiography. However, it remains unclear whether this increased spatial resolution significantly improves the diagnostic performance of CMRA in detecting the severity of coronary artery disease (CAD).
OBJECTIVES: To compare 0.7 mm3 CMRA to 0.9 mm3 CMRA for the detection of CAD, using two-dimensional quantitative coronary angiography as the reference standard.
METHODS AND

Coronary artery disease (CAD) is a common condition caused by the accumulation of atherosclerotic plaques. It can be classified into stable CAD or acute coronary syndrome. Coronary computed tomography angiography (CCTA) has a high negative predictive value and is used as the first examination for diagnosing stable CAD, particularly in patients at intermediate-to-high risk. CCTA is also adopted for diagnosing acute coronary syndrome, particularly in patients at low-to-intermediate risk. Myocardial ischemia does not always co-exist with coronary artery stenosis, and the positive predictive value

Coronary computed tomographic angiography (CCTA) is becoming the first-line investigation for establishing the presence of coronary artery disease and, with fractional flow reserve (FFRCT), its haemodynamic significance. In patients without significant epicardial obstruction, its role is either to rule out atherosclerosis or to detect subclinical plaque that should be monitored for plaque progression/regression following prevention therapy and provide risk classification. Ischaemic non-obstructive coronary arteries are also expected to be assessed by non-invasive imaging, including CCTA. In pa

A 79-year-old woman presented with new-onset heart failure. She had pleural effusion, pericardial effusion, and an ejection fraction of 35% on echocardiogram. Her coronary angiogram revealed mild coronary artery disease (CAD). However, initially unexplained extravasation of the contrast was also seen in the cranial view during angiogram. The decision was made to medically manage CAD, but she remained tachycardic, with borderline low blood pressure. After a series of complications and tests, clearance of contrast from the stomach was confirmed. This represents an unusual case in which fluorosco

A coronary angiography-derived index of microvascular resistance (caIMR) is proposed for physiological assessment of microvasular diseases in coronary circulation. The aim of the study is to assess diagnostic performance of caIMR, using wire-derived index of microvascular resistance (IMR) as the reference standard. IMR was demonstrated in 56 patients (57 vessels) with stable/unstable angina pectoris and no obstructive coronary arteries in three centers using the Certus pressure wire. Based on the aortic pressure wave and coronary angiograms from two projections, the caIMR was computed and asse

Out-of-hospital cardiac arrest (OHCA) presents a great challenge for the health care systems even in the highly developed countries. For several decades, our greatest efforts have been directed toward the improvement of the prehospital management, including promotion of lay resuscitation and deployment of public access automated defibrillators. Recently, the importance of the hospital phase of the OHCA-management has been also emphasized. Attention has been paid to targeted temperature management and also to early coronary intervention. For those patients who present with ST-elevation on their

We report a case of asceptic sialadenitis that occurred in a patient with end-stage renal failure following administration of iodinated contrast for coronary and carotid angiography. This is a rare but important complication of iodinated contrast. Early diagnosis of iodide mumps following angiography avoids unnecessary investigations and treatment. In this case the patient underwent haemodialysis with subsequent complete resolution of the sialadenitis, a treatment that has previously not been reported for this condition.

Most acute coronary syndromes are caused by sudden luminal thrombosis due to atherosclerotic plaque rupture or erosion. Preventing such an event seems to be the only effective strategy to reduce mortality and morbidity of coronary heart disease. Coronary lesions prone to rupture have a distinct morphology compared with stable plaques, and provide a unique opportunity for noninvasive imaging to identify vulnerable plaques before they lead to clinical events. The submillimeter spatial resolution and excellent image quality of modern computed tomography (CT) scanners allow coronary atheroscleroti

BACKGROUND: Coronary angiography is an important tool in diagnosis of cardiovascular diseases. However, it is the administration is relatively stressful and emotionally traumatic for the subjects. The aim of this study is to evaluate psychophysiological responses induced by the coronary angiography instead of subjective methods such as a questionnaire. We have also evaluated the influence of the tranquilizer on the psychophysiological responses.
METHODS: Electrocardiography (ECG), Blood Volume Pulse (BVP), and Galvanic Skin Response (GSR) of 34 patients who underwent coronary angiography oper

During recent years, technologic advancements in computed tomography (CT) have allowed robust cardiac and coronary imaging. Small, mobile cardiac structures such as the coronary arteries can now be imaged directly and noninvasively with high precision. Given the fact that coronary CT angiography (CCTA) can detect preclinical calcified and noncalcified atherosclerosis, there is potential to revolutionize the management of ischemic heart disease by refining risk stratification and improving outcomes in various clinical settings. However, despite this progress, CT has come under scrutiny as conce

Myocardial bridging is a condition where the coronary artery traverses through the myocardium. Although it is not an uncommon finding in left anterior descending coronary artery (LAD), recently we came across a very rare case of right coronary artery (RCA) traversing through the right myocardium on CT coronary angiography.

Left ventriculography with selective coronary angiography was performed on 13 patients with acute myocardial infarcts complicated by cardiogenic shock of left ventricular failure and hypotension. Twelve patients (92-3%) tolerated the procedure well. Irreversible ventricular fibrillation resulting in death occurred in one patient 7-7%) during the opacification of the left coronary artery. Seven (87-5%) of the eight patients treated surgically and two (50%) of the four patients treated medically died. This study shows that although acute myocardial infarction increases the risk of coronary angio

BACKGROUND: The coronary sinus (CS) is a major venous drainage pathway of the heart but is rarely the site of clinically significant pathology. When obstruction of the CS occurs, it can lead to serious hemodynamic consequences and a high risk of mortality if not promptly identified.
CASE PRESENTATION: We report the case of a 60-year-old male with Type 2 diabetes mellitus on chronic hemodialysis, who presented with chest pain and dyspnea. While undergoing diagnostic coronary angiography for suspected ischemia, severe stenosis of the CS was incidentally observed. The patient had elevated left v

The treatment of coronary artery disease (CAD), which is defined by stable anatomical atherosclerotic and functional alterations of epicardial vessels or microcirculation, focuses on managing intermittent angina symptoms and preventing major adverse cardiovascular events with optimal medical therapy. When patients with known CAD present with angina and no acute coronary syndrome, they have historically been evaluated with a variety of noninvasive stress tests that utilize electrocardiography, radionuclide scintigraphy, echocardiography, or magnetic resonance imaging for determining the presenc
