Corynebacterium glucuronolyticum causing genitourinary tract infection: Case report and review of the literature.

Corynebacterium species are increasingly recognized as opportunistic pathogens. A growing number of taxonomic studies has yielded a description of numerous new Corynebacterium species, such as those related to the urogenital tract, with Corynebacterium glucuronolyticum found to be rarely involved in genitourinary tract infections, particularly in male individuals. In this report, we describe a urethritis case caused by C. glucuronolyticum in a 37-year-old, apparently healthy male, who complained mild pain in the lower abdomen, with several urinary symptoms. While urethral and semen specimens d

A novel experimental platform for toxigenic and non-toxigenic Corynebacterium ulcerans infection in mice.

Corynebacterium ulcerans is a zoonotic pathogen that can produce diphtheria toxin and causes an illness categorized as diphtheria in the European Union because its clinical appearance is similar to that of diphtheria caused by Corynebacterium diphtheriae. Despite the importance of the pathogen in public health, the organism's mechanism of infection has not been extensively studied, especially in experimental animal models. Therefore in the present study we constructed an intranasal infection system for mice. Mice are insensitive to diphtheria toxin and this has the advantage of excluding the c

Carbonate apatite nephrolithiasis associated with Corynebacterium urealyticum urinary tract infection in a dog.

BACKGROUND: Urinary tract infections caused by Corynebacterium urealyticum are uncommon in veterinary medicine. Encrusted cystitis, encrusted pyelitis and uroliths have been described as complications in humans, but only encrusted cystitis and cystoliths have been reported in dogs so far. Because C. urealyticum is usually resistant to all standard antibacterial drugs, antimicrobial treatment and elimination of this microorganism are challenging. CASE REPORT: An 11-month-old female spayed mixed-breed dog was evaluated because of a C. urealyticum urinary tract infection, mineralisation within b

Cerebrospinal fluid shunt infection caused by Corynebacterium sp: case report and review.

BACKGROUND: A 36-year-old immunocompetent woman with a posterior fossa arteriovenous malformation (PF-AVM) and hydrocephalus presented with low fever and mental confusion 4 days after ventriculoperitoneal shunting (VPS). METHODS: Cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) and ventricular catheter tip cultures isolated Corynebacterium sp. Similar to previous cases in the literature, species determination was not possible. However, the antibiotic sensitivity profile of this isolate suggested Corynebacterium jeikeium. Conversion to external ventricular drainage (EVD) was done and intravenous vancomycin was admin

Case of erythema nodosum associated with granulomatous mastitis probably due to Corynebacterium infection.

Granulomatous mastitis (GM) is a rare chronic inflammatory breast disease that can be mistaken for a variety of inflammatory and neoplastic disorders of the breast. Erythema nodosum (EN) is a common panniculitis, and is often associated with a variety of diseases, yet coexistence of EN and GM is very rare. In this paper, we present a young Japanese woman with EN associated with GM probably due to Corynebacterium infection. Both lesions of EN and GM were successfully treated with oral minocycline and surgical drainage. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first case of EN associated with G

Corynebacterium bovis: epizootiologic features and environmental contamination in an enzootically infected rodent room.

Corynebacterium bovis is a common pathogen in athymic nude mouse colonies. Control and eradication of the organism are challenging because depopulation and restricted colony access are often not options within vivaria. We evaluated potential sources and dissemination routes of C. bovis in an enzootically infected colony. Immunocompetent mice and personnel were evaluated for their potential to carry C. bovis, and husbandry and sanitation methods were evaluated for their efficacy in preventing cross-contamination. C. bovis was detected in furred immunocompetent mice previously exposed to infecte

[Corynebacterium suis infections in swine. 2. Morphological findings in the urinary tract with special reference to the bladder].

Morphological investigations of the urethra, urinary bladder (2 localizations), ureter, renal pelvis and kidneys were performed in sows with Corynebacterium suis infection. The first stages of the disease were characterized by changes of the transitional epithelium in the bladder where epithelial vacuolisation, goblet cell differentiation, leucocytic infiltrations, and haemorrhages occurred. In chronically affected animals different stages of a mucopurulent, partly erosive to ulcerative cystitis were observed. Furthermore, chronic cystitis was characterized by polypoid mucosal proliferation an

Invasive Corynebacterium striatum infection: A case of concurrent isolation from blood and cerebrospinal fluid.

A 60-year-old male patient presented with headache and vomiting following a fall. Computed Tomography (CT) brain imaging showed a subarachnoid hemorrhage due to aneurysm rupture in the anterior communicating artery (ACOM) and direct anterior cerebral artery (DACA). Right frontotemporal craniotomy and clipping of both ACOM and DACA aneurysms were performed. Corynebacterium striatum was circumstantially isolated from both blood and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) during the hospital stay. This report summaries the patient's clinical course, management of condition, and the consequences of this rare in

Armenian Hamsters (Nothocricetulus migratorius): A New Host Susceptible to Corynebacterium bovis Infection and Disease.

Corynebacterium bovis causes skin disease in immunocompromised mice and possibly rats. In 2022, scaly skin and mortality were observed in 7- to 11-d-old neonates (n = 8) from a primiparous Armenian (Nothocricetulus migratorius) hamster breeding pair in a newly established colony. C. bovis was detected by culture and PCR, and affected animals had moderate to severe acanthotic, hyperkeratotic lesions with intralesional C. bovis confirmed by in situ hybridization. Intrafollicular Demodex cricetuli mites, an ectoparasite found in all laboratory-maintained Armenian hamsters, were also identified in

Specific nasopharyngeal Corynebacterium strains serve as gatekeepers against SARS-CoV-2 infection.

The SARS-CoV-2 virus is still causing a worldwide problem. The virus settles primarily on the nasal mucosa, and the infection and its course depend on individual susceptibility. Our aim was to investigate the nasopharynx composition's role in the individual susceptibility. During the first phase of SARS-CoV-2 pandemic, nasopharyngeal microbiome samples of close contact unvaccinated patients were investigated by 16S rRNA analysis and by culturing. The whole genome of cultured Corynebacteria was sequenced. The relative expression of ACE2, TMPRSS2, and cathepsin L on Caco-2 cells and the strength

Infective Endocarditis Caused by Corynebacterium striatum: Navigating Challenges and Treatment Strategies in an Emerging Threat.

Corynebacterium striatum is a type of bacteria normally found in the environment and is considered a benign microbe on the human body surface. However, it can induce severe medical conditions, including bacteremia, infective endocarditis, osteomyelitis, and infections, in other organs. This case study focuses on a 56-year-old male patient with multiple comorbidities who presented with an ischemic stroke. Several days after the insertion of a right internal jugular line, the patient developed fever and tachycardia. Blood cultures revealed the presence of Corynebacterium striatum, a Gram-positiv

Infection and colonization by Corynebacterium pseudodiphtheriticum: a 9-year observational study in a university central hospital.

Despite constituting part of the human commensal flora, Corynebacterium pseudodiphtheriticum has been recognized as a potentially infectious agent, most frequently in immunocompromised patients or individuals with other morbidity factors, but significant association to comorbid states remains unproven. This study's purpose was to assess clinical significance, risk factors for infection and antimicrobial susceptibility of C. pseudodiphtheriticum isolates. A retrospective observational study was conducted. Relevance of isolation was determined by clinical, laboratory, and imaging criteria. Forty

Urinary tract infection with Corynebacterium aurimucosum after urethroplasty stricture of the urethra: a case report.

INTRODUCTION: Corynebacteria have an important place among the commensal flora of the skin and mucous membranes. Except for Corynebacterium diphtheriae, they were once considered contaminants of mucosa. Recent publications in medical bacteriology have highlighted the importance of several species, such as C. aurimucosum. To the best of our knowledge, we report the first isolation of this strain from urine. CASE PRESENTATION: We report a case of a patient with a urinary tract infection with C. aurimucosum. We isolated this bacterium from a 52-year-old man of Wolof ethniticity (an ethnic group

Infective Endocarditis Due to Corynebacterium jeikeium: Four Case Reports and Narrative Review of the Literature.

Corynebacterium jeikeium, a pleomorphic Gram-positive bacillus, is a common component of the cutaneous microbiota, usually considered as a contaminant, with little pathogenic potential. However, its role in various types of infections, such as bacteremia, sepsis, endocarditis (IE) and infection of prosthetic material is gradually being proven. Few cases of IE due to Corynebacterium jeikeium have been described in the literature. The aim of this article was to describe four cases of IE due to Corynebacterium jeikeium diagnosed in our hospital between May 2021 and April 2022, as well as to condu

Effects of non-specific immunopotentiators in experimental Schistosoma mansoni infection. II. Corynebacterium parvum.

The effects of Corynebacterium parvum on host protection, tissue reaction and "in vivo" chemotaxis in Schistosoma mansoni infected mice were studied. The C. parvum was given intraperitoneally using a dose of 0.7 mg, twice a week (for 4 weeks), thirty days before (prophylactic treatment) or after infection (curative treatment). The host protection was evaluated through the recovery of adult worms by liver perfusion and was lower in the prophylactic group as compared to the control group (p = 0.018), resulting in 44% protection. The "in vivo" leukocyte response in both prophylactic and curative

Natural habitats of Corynebacterium kutscheri in subclinically infected ICGN and DBA/2 strains of mice.

Subclinically infected mice of ICGN and DBA/2 strains housed in a conventionally managed colony were examined to determine natural habitats of Corynebacterium kutscheri. At 5, 7, 9, 12 and 13 months after initial isolation of the organism from oral cavity and cecal contents of five ICGN mice, attempts were made to isolate C. kutscheri from 19 sites using a new selective medium, furazolidone-nalidixic acid-colimycin agar. From the initial survey to 13 months, C. kutscheri was isolated from 27 of 29 ICGN mice (93.1%) and 9 of 10 DBA/2 mice (90%). In contrast, antibody against C. kutscheri was de

Predisposition to Corynebacterium jeikeium infection in acute lymphoblastic leukemia: a report of two cases in Trinidad.

Two hospitalized patients (a 4 and 6 year old male and female, respectively) with acute lymphoblastic leukaemia (ALL), had each at different periods sustained burns with necrosis from extravasation of chemotherapeutic products. Pure cultures from their wound exudates and blood repeatedly revealed Corynebacterium jeikeium, an organism recognized and identified in the last decade as an opportunistic cause of life-threatening nosocomial infections particularly in patients on long-term multiple antimicrobial therapy, and in those who are neutropenic or have cardiac valve replacement.
