Space radiation health risks to hematopoietic, neural, and gastrointestinal systems in astronauts.

The rapid progress in global deep space exploration presents astronauts with a complex space radiation environment that substantially exceeds that of near-Earth orbit. Space radiation primarily consists of galactic cosmic rays (GCRs) and solar particle events (SPEs), which exhibit strong penetrative capability and considerable biological damaging potential. These factors may induce persistent oxidative stress, mitochondrial dysfunction, DNA double-strand breaks, and repair pathway challenges. This review examines the impacts of space radiation on the hematopoietic, neural, and gastrointestinal

Adverse Outcome Pathways Applied to Space Radiation Research.

Long-duration spaceflight exposes astronauts to various stressors that can alter human physiology, potentially causing immediate and long-term health effects. These stressors can damage biomolecules, cells, tissues, and organs, leading to adverse outcomes. Developing adverse outcome pathways (AOPs) relevant to radiation exposure can guide research priorities and inform risk assessments of future space exploration activities. Through expert consultation, we developed an AOP network linking 18 key events (KEs) to four non-cancer outcomes: learning and memory impairment, bone loss, abnormal vascu

Loss of Cognitive Flexibility Practice Effects in Female Rats Exposed to Simulated Space Radiation.

During the planned missions to Mars, astronauts will be faced with many potential health hazards including prolonged exposure to space radiation. Ground-based studies have shown that exposure to space radiation impairs the performance of male rats in cognitive flexibility tasks which involve processes that are essential to rapidly and efficiently adapting to different situations. However, there is presently a paucity of information on the effects of space radiation on cognitive flexibility in female rodents. This study has determined the impact that exposure to a low (10 cGy) dose of ions from

[Bio-objects and biological methods of space radiation effects evaluation].

The unique conditions of space experiments place austere requirements to bio-objects and biological methods of radiation effects evaluation. The paper discusses suitability of a number of bio-objects varying in stage of evolution and metabolism for space researches aimed to state common patterns of the radiation damage caused by heavy ions (HI), and character of HI-cell interaction. Physical detectors in space experiments of the BIOBLOCK series make it possible to identify bio-objects hit by space HI and to set correlation between HI track topography and biological effect. The paper provides a

Dosimetry at aviation altitudes (2006-2008).

Based upon the European Union (EU)-Directive 96/29/EURATOM, legal regulations on the radiation protection of aircrew had to be implemented into the corresponding national law within the member states of the EU by 13 May 2000. In Article 42 the directive stipulates, among other things, that the exposure of the crew concerned shall be assessed. This requirement has been implemented by dose calculations for most aircrew members in the EU. Some airlines and research institutes regularly spot check the calculated doses by measuring flights. The solar minimum is a time period of particular interest

[State of cardiovascular system in immediate and delayed periods following exposure of organism to ionizing radiation].

Data on the progress of radiation damages and the character of shifts in the cardiovascular functioning following exposure to ionizing radiation as a function of dose were analyzed. Reviewed were experimental and clinical material, and records of periodic medical examinations of persons who had worked long with sources of ionizing radiation. A plausible character of deviations in health and working ability of cosmonauts in flight and at the end of career due to cardiovascular disorders is described.

Airport full-body screening: what is the risk?

In the past year, the Transportation Security Administration has deployed full-body scanners in airports across the United States in response to heightened security needs. Several groups have opposed the scans, citing privacy concerns and fear of the radiation emitted by the backscatter x-ray scanners, 1 of the 2 types of machines in use. The radiation doses emitted by the scans are extremely small; the scans deliver an amount of radiation equivalent to 3 to 9 minutes of the radiation received through normal daily living. Furthermore, since flying itself increases exposure to ionizing radiatio

Cosmic dust impacts on the Hubble Space Telescope.

Exposure of the Hubble Space Telescope to space in low Earth orbit resulted in numerous hypervelocity impacts by cosmic dust (micrometeoroids) and anthropogenic particles (orbital debris) on the solar arrays and the radiator shield of the Wide Field and Planetary Camera 2, both subsequently returned to Earth. Solar cells preserve residues from smaller cosmic dust (and orbital debris) but give less reliable information from larger particles. Here, we present images and analyses from electron, ion and X-ray fluorescence microscopes for larger impact features (millimetre- to centimetre-scale) on

Relation of pandemics with solar cycles through ozone, cloud seeds, and vitamin D.

The global records of infectious diseases, including Western and Eastern documents from 1825 to 2020, during which sunspot observations are considered reliable, show that 27 of the 34 pandemic outbreaks were coincident with sunspot number maxima or minima. There is evidence that the intensity of galactic cosmic rays is anti-correlated with solar activity and that cloud seed formation is accelerated by galactic cosmic rays. There are a substantial number of research papers showing the relationship between COVID-19 and vitamin D deficiency. The data analysis of ozone thickness measured based on

Aging in orbit: The twelve hallmarks as a bidirectional bridge between spaceflight-induced senescence and terrestrial geroscience.

Human spaceflight exposes crew members to a combination of environmental stressors - including microgravity, galactic cosmic radiation, circadian disruption, and prolonged confinement - that together induce multisystem physiological changes resembling terrestrial aging. In this narrative review, we examine how short- and medium-term spaceflight affects all twelve recognized hallmarks of aging. Integrated multi-omics analyses in astronauts and rodent models identified mitochondrial dysfunction as a central node of spaceflight biology, with oxidative damage propagating genomic instability, cellu

Cosmological implications of the Machian principle.

The famous idea of Ernst Mach concerning the non-absolute but relational character of particle inertia is taken up in this paper and is reinvestigated with respect to its cosmological implications. From Thirring's general relativistic study of the old Newtonian problem of the relativity of rotations in different reference systems, it appears that the equivalence principle with respect to rotating reference systems, if at all, can only be extended to the system of the whole universe, if the mass of the universe scales with the effective radius or extent of the universe. A reanalysis of Thirring

Exposure to low (10 cGy) doses of 4He ions leads to an apparent increase in risk taking propensity in female rats.

The planned missions to the Moon and Mars will present more significant health challenges to astronauts compared to low earth orbit missions. During deep space missions, astronauts will be constantly exposed to Space radiation (SR). Multiple rodent studies suggest that < 25 cGy of SR impairs performance in executive functions, which play a key role in advanced cognitive processes, but also regulate response inhibition and impulse control. There is the possibility that SR exposure may exacerbate aberrant behaviors evoked by psychological stress related to exposure to isolated and confined (ICE)

Spaceflight associated dry eye syndrome (SADES): Radiation, stressors, and ocular surface health.

Crewed spaceflight missions require careful scrutinization of the health risks including alterations to the tear film lipid layer in astronauts. We review the current literature and prior published work on tear film lipid layer biophysics and secondary spaceflight-associated dry eye syndrome (SADES). We define the term spaceflight-associated dry eye syndrome to describe the collection of ocular surface signs and symptoms experienced by astronauts during spaceflight. Our review covers the ocular surface and lipidomics in the spaceflight environment. From our literature review, we extrapolate bi

Light flashes and other sensory illusions perceived in space travel and on ground, including proton and heavy ion therapies.

Most of the astronauts experience visual illusions, apparent flashes of light (LF) in absence of light. The first reported observation of this phenomenon was in July 1969 by Buzz Aldrin, in the debriefing following the Apollo 11 mission. Several ground-based experiments in the 1970s tried to clarify the mechanisms behind these light flashes and to evaluate possible related risks. These works were supported by dedicated experiments in space on the following Apollo flights and in Low Earth Orbit (LEO). It was soon demonstrated that the LF could be caused by charged particles (present in the spac

Breast cancer risk among Finnish cabin attendants: a nested case-control study.

BACKGROUND: Earlier studies have found increased breast cancer risk among female cabin crew. This has been suggested to reflect lifestyle factors (for example, age at first birth), other confounding factors (for example, age at menarche), or occupational factors such as exposure to cosmic radiation and circadian rhythm alterations due to repeated jet lag. AIMS: To assess the contribution of occupational versus lifestyle and other factors to breast cancer risk among cabin attendants in Finland. METHODS: A standardised self-administered questionnaire on demographic, occupational, and lifestyle

Integrative focus on the space exposome-integrome: physiological challenges and practical limits of countermeasures beyond low Earth orbit.

Human spaceflight is advancing toward sustainable exploration through initiatives like NASA's Artemis program, aiming for a lunar outpost and eventual Mars mission. Astronauts face hazards including altered gravity, isolation, and cosmic radiation, linked to over thirty health risks. This review, reflecting ESA community expertise, outlines how understanding the space exposome-integrome interaction can improve risk stratification, guide personalized countermeasures, and address knowledge gaps essential for safe deep-space exploration.

Ionizing radiation exposure of LDEF (pre-recovery estimates).

The long duration exposure facility (LDEF), launched into a 258 nautical mile orbit with an inclination of 28.5 degrees, remained in space for nearly 6 yr. The 21,500 lb NASA satellite was one of the largest payloads ever deployed by the Space Shuttle. LDEF completed 32,422 orbits and carried 57 major experiments representing more than 200 investigators from 33 private companies, 21 universities and nine countries. The experiments covered a wide range of disciplines including basic science, electronics, optics, materials, structures and power and propulsion. A number of the experiments were sp

A multilevel probabilistic dose response model for radiation-induced Harderian gland tumor prevalence-single beam and mixed field effects.

Space radiation exposure is one of the main risks faced by crewmembers during exploration missions. Currently, the greatest uncertainty in radiation-induced cancer risk estimation for spaceflight missions is in the calculation of the quality factor (QF) largely due to limited ground-based experimental data for the vast range of radiation types found in space. Such data are needed to guide and validate dose-response models and subsequent calculations of relative biological effectiveness (RBE) used for QF assignment. In this work, a dose-response model is developed on the basis of probabilistic

Space Radiation and Cancer Risk in Astronauts: Models, Evidence, Uncertainties, and Emerging Imaging Perspectives.

Cancer risk estimation remains one of the main unresolved challenges in human spaceflight beyond low Earth orbit, where astronauts are exposed to galactic cosmic rays, solar particle events, and high-linear energy transfer (high-LET) secondary radiation. This narrative review summarizes the principal quantitative models used to estimate radiation-induced cancer risk in astronauts, including particle fluence-based cross-sections, mixture models, risk of exposure-induced death (REID)-based operational frameworks, uncertainty distribution approaches, and ensemble models. Evaluating the biological impact of shelters on astronaut health during different solar particle events: a Geant4-DNA simulation study.

Mechanistic Monte Carlo simulations have proven invaluable in tackling complex challenges in radiobiology, for example for protecting astronauts from solar particle events (SPEs) during deep space missions which remains an underexplored area. In this study, the Geant4-DNA Monte Carlo code was used to assess the DNA damage caused by SPEs and evaluate the protective effectiveness of a multilayer shelter. By examining the February 1956 and October 1989 SPEs-two extreme cases-the results showed that the proposed shelter reduced DNA damage by up to 57.9% for the October 1989 SPE and 36.7% for the F
