[Bovine costal cartilage as material for otologic reconstruction: anatomo-functional results].

The Authors present their experience in using bovine cartilage as otological material reconstruction. Cartilage of the ribs is to collect from selected bred cattle and is first placed in an antibiotic solution for 3 days and then in a 70% ethyl alcohol in which it is stored for 20 days before being utilized. One hundred-nineteen cartilage heterografts have been implanted in the middle ear since January 1989. We report the results of 86 cases which were included in a followed study for at least 12 months. Bovine cartilage was used in 47 canal up techniques, 28 canal down techniques and 11 anato

Does overgrowth of costal cartilage cause pectus carinatum? A three-dimensional computed tomography evaluation of rib length and costal cartilage length in patients with asymmetric pectus carinatum.

OBJECTIVES: To evaluate whether the overgrowth of costal cartilage may cause pectus carinatum using three-dimensional (3D) computed tomography (CT). METHODS: Twenty-two patients with asymmetric pectus carinatum were included. The fourth, fifth and sixth ribs and costal cartilages were semi-automatically traced, and their full lengths were measured on three-dimensional CT images using curved multi-planar reformatted (MPR) techniques. The rib length and costal cartilage length, the total combined length of the rib and costal cartilage and the ratio of the cartilage and rib lengths (C/R ratio) i

Correction of Tanzer II Constricted Ear: A Framework Approach With Costal Cartilage Graft and Auricular Cartilage Release.

BACKGROUND: Surgical correction of Tanzer type II constricted ear remains challenging due to the multidimensional deficiency of the auricular framework and skin envelope. This study evaluates the clinical efficacy and patient-reported outcomes of a framework-based approach combining autologous costal cartilage grafting with auricular cartilage release. METHODS: A retrospective study was conducted on 74 patients (90 ears) with Tanzer type II constricted ear treated between 2021 and 2023. The surgical technique involved radial chondrotomies of the constricted cartilage and rigid fixation of a s

Effects of platelet-rich plasma on cartilage regeneration after costal cartilage resection: a stereological and histopathological study.

BACKGROUND: In cases of congenital chest wall deformities, it is important to maintain the flexibility of the chest wall after rib cartilage resection. In this study, we aimed to determine the regeneration capability of cartilage and the effects of platelet-rich plasma (PRP) on the regeneration process. METHODS: A total of 16 four-week-old New Zealand rabbits were used in this study. In the 4th-5th right costal cartilages, the perichondrial sheaths were dissected and costal cartilages were excised. Then, the perichondrial sheaths were closed with absorbable material in the sham group (n = 8),

The 10th Costal Cartilage Graft in Secondary Cleft Rhinoplasty-A Versatile Rib.

Autologous costal cartilage for rhinoplasty is an excellent graft material providing both volume and quality of cartilage required for nasal reconstruction. Commonly, the 5th, 6th, 7th, and 8th rib costal cartilages have been harvested but other ribs such as the 10th rib are often overlooked and yet offer an excellent graft option for columellar, alar rim, nasal tip, and dorsal augmentation grafts. The use of the 10th rib costal cartilage in patients with complex secondary cleft nasal deformity has scant reference in the literature. We demonstrate our simple and quick 10th rib cartilage harves

[Costal cartilage structural and functional changes in children with a funnel or keeled chest].

Congenital chest wall deformities (CCWDs) in children are severe diseases leading to cosmetic defects and diseases of the respiratory and cardiovascular systems. The most common of these deformities are funnel-shaped (pectus excavatum, FD) and keeled (pectus carinatum, KD) ones. The pathogenesis of CCWDs and the role of costal cartilage structural and functional changes in their pathogenesis have now been not well studied, which makes it difficult to elaborate pathogenetic approaches to correcting these diseases. Analysis of the literature has shown that structural and functional changes occur

Costal cartilage transplantation for treatment of growth plate injury in a rabbit model.

OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this study is to evaluate the effects of allogenic costal cartilage transplantation on preventing bony bridge formation and angular deformities for the treatment of partial growth plate injury using a rabbit model. METHODS: An experimental model of partial growth injury was created by resecting the medial part of the proximal tibial growth plate in male six-week-old New Zealand White rabbits. The rabbits were divided into four groups: no surgery; no transplantation; bone wax transplantation; and allogenic costal cartilage transplantation. The angular deformities of

The etiology of pectus carinatum involves overgrowth of costal cartilage and undergrowth of ribs.

PURPOSE: We compared the length of costal cartilage and rib between patients with symmetric pectus carinatum and controls without anterior chest wall protrusion, using a 3-dimensional (3D) computed tomography (CT) to evaluate whether the overgrowth of costal cartilage exists in patients with pectus carinatum. SUBJECTS AND METHODS: Twenty-six patients with symmetric pectus carinatum and matched twenty-six controls without chest wall protrusion were enrolled. We measured the full lengths of the 4th-6th ribs and costal cartilages using 3-D volume rendering CT images and the curved multiplanar re

Reconstruction of microtia with laser hair removal before transplantation of costal cartilage.

When scalp skin is contained in reconstruction of microtia, the hair growth on the reconstructed auricle causes aesthetic problems. Several techniques to deal with hairline, such as skin graft, skin flap, tissue expander and electroepilation, have been reported, but there are few reports using laser hair removal for microtia patients. We performed presurgical laser therapy in five patients. The low regions of hairlines in unilateral microtia children were irradiated by two kinds of laser systems for 1 year before the transplantation of costal cartilage. When hair growth was seen after the surg

A new technique for harvesting costal cartilage with minimum sacrifice at the donor site.

With conventional procedures for harvesting costal cartilage, several large, full-thickness cartilage blocks are harvested from the chest wall and are cut, shaped, and joined to create the desired form. Many pieces of unused cartilage are discarded excluding those preserved for future use. Conventional procedures for costal cartilage harvesting are also associated with severe problems such as pain, deformity of the chest wall, and a long scar. We developed a new technique that permits only the necessary size and shape of cartilage to be directly harvested with the use of a chisel. With this te

Experience in tracheobronchial reconstruction with a costal cartilage graft for congenital tracheal stenosis.

Although successful surgical management of congenital tracheal stenosis has been reported, it is still controversial as to the best operative procedure. Eleven infants with congenital tracheal stenosis were evaluated to confirm the efficacy of tracheobronchial reconstruction with costal cartilage graft. Symptoms ranged from recurrent respiratory infection to severe respiratory failure. All infants had other congenital anomalies in addition to tracheal stenosis. Notably, five infants had pulmonary artery sling and four infants had patent ductus arteriosus. Definitive diagnosis was made by bronc

Posterior pharyngeal wall augmentation using autologous tiered costal cartilage for velopharyngeal insufficiency.

The aim of this study was to retrospectively estimate intervention outcomes and to establish suitable indications for autogenous tiered cartilage augmentation (ATCA) of the posterior pharyngeal wall for velopharyngeal insufficiency (VPI). The sample cohort comprised 17 consecutive patients with VPI (10 boys, 7 girls), excluding syndromic cases. Pre- and postoperative findings were comprehensively evaluated using a combination of speech assessment and lateral pharyngography (LPG). Hypernasality and consonant distortion were scored (normal: 0; mild: 1; moderate: 2; severe: 3). Velopharyngeal gap

Minimally Invasive Repair of Adult Slipped Rib Syndrome Without Costal Cartilage Excision.

BACKGROUND: Slipped rib syndrome (SRS) is a painful disorder caused when 1 or more of the 8th-10th false ribs become abnormally mobile. Established treatment modalities include analgesia, intercostal nerve injection, and costal cartilage excision. No definitive surgical correction of SRS without cartilage excision has been previously described. We aimed to determine whether a nonexcisional repair technique in affected adults could demonstrate significant relief from SRS using standardized outcome measures. METHODS: We performed a retrospective review of cases of SRS treated at our institution

Reconstructive rhinoplasty: operative revision of patients with previous autologous costal cartilage grafts.

BACKGROUND: Costal cartilage grafts are used more frequently in secondary rhinoplasty. However, these procedures result in patients that require further revision operations that are not trivial. The purpose of this study was to assess the outcomes of reconstructive rhinoplasty performed on patients with a history of prior secondary or tertiary rhinoplasty using autogenous costal cartilage grafts. METHODS: A retrospective review was conducted of tertiary rhinoplasty procedures. Outcomes of interest included the indications for the revision operation; revision rate following the tertiary costal

Stereological studies on the epiphyseal growth cartilage and characterization of costal cartilage proteoglycans in the achondroplastic (cn/cn) mouse.

The achondroplastic mouse is a dwarf mouse in which the endochondral growth of the skeleton is disturbed. The main morphological characteristic of the affected growth cartilage is an underdeveloped hypertrophic zone. The pattern of matrix mineralization seems to be unaffected, even in areas where hypertrophic chondrocytes are completely absent. The present stereological results indicate a disturbance of the cn/cn cartilage already in the proliferative zone. At the electron microscopical level a clearly abnormal spatial distribution of matrix vesicles was observed in the affected growth cartila

Premaxillary Graft with Costal Cartilage in Rhinoplasty: A Technique to Support the Nasal Tip.

BACKGROUND: Rhinoplasty is an ever-evolving field, with innovative techniques continually being developed to enhance both aesthetic and functional outcomes for patients. Increasingly, research has focused on the integral role of the facial skeleton in providing nasal support and projection. Central to the structural integrity of the nose is the maxillary bone, which occupies a pivotal position in the midface. METHODS: The objective of this study is to assess the outcomes of patients who underwent rhinoplasty involving the placement of a premaxillary graft fashioned from costal cartilage. The

Comparison of Bending Properties in Paired Human Ribs with and without Costal Cartilage.

Thoracic injuries, most frequently rib fractures, commonly occur in motor vehicle crashes. With an increased reliance on human body models (HBMs) for injury prediction in various crash scenarios, all thoracic tissues and structures require more comprehensive evaluation for improvement of HBMs. The objective of this study was to quantify the contribution of costal cartilage to whole rib bending properties in physical experiments. Fifteen bilateral pairs of 5th human ribs were included in this study. One rib within each pair was tested without costal cartilage while the other rib was tested with
