Clinical Analysis of the Effects of Cranial Suture Reconstruction and Frontal Frame Retraction in the Operation of Premature Closure of the Sagittal Suture in Infants.

AIM: To compare and analyze the effects of cranial suture reconstruction and frontal frame retraction for surgical treatment of premature closure of the sagittal suture. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Infants with premature closure of the sagittal suture were included in this study. All infants underwent preoperative skull model reconstruction using imaging techniques and 3D printing. The infants were then allocated to either the experiment group, where the frontal frame retraction was used to guide the surgical treatment of cranial stenosis, or the control group, where traditional cranial suture reco

Outcomes of half-width vertical rectus transposition augmented with posterior fixation sutures for sixth cranial nerve palsy.

AIM: To describe the experience with half-width vertical muscles transposition (VRT) augmented with posterior fixation sutures. METHODS: The clinical charts of all patients, who underwent half-width VRT augmented with posterior fixation sutures for sixth cranial nerve palsy from January 2003 to December 2018, were retrospectively reviewed. For each patient, pre- and post-operatively, the largest measured angle was used for the calculations, usually resulting with the angle for distance, except in young infants, where measurements were made at near fixation using the Krimsky test. RESULTS: Fi

PLGA-based control release of Noggin blocks the premature fusion of cranial sutures caused by retinoic acid.

Craniosynostosis (CS), the premature and pathological fusion of cranial sutures, is a relatively common developmental disorder. Elucidation of the pathways involved and thus therapeutically targeting it would be promising for the prevention of CS. In the present study, we examined the role of BMP pathway in the all-trans retinoic acid (atRA)-induced CS model and tried to target the pathway in vivo via PLGA-based control release. As expected, the posterior frontal suture was found to fuse prematurely in the atRA subcutaneous injection mouse model. Further mechanism study revealed that atRA coul

P38α MAPK-induced senescence in cranial suture progenitor cells promotes craniosynostosis.

Craniosynostosis is a congenital cranial developmental disorder that frequently leads to craniofacial deformities and even neurological dysfunction. The abnormalities in cranial suture progenitor cells (SPC) are considered a key event in craniosynostosis; however, the specific mechanism remains unclear. Using a syndromic craniosynostosis mouse model, we found that hyperactivation of p38α mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) induced senescence in SPC of craniosynostosis mice. Integrated analysis of datasets from human patients and murine models, combined with cellular validation, revealed th

Cranial Vault Suture Obliteration in Relation to Age: An Autopsy-Based Observational Study.

BACKGROUND: Age is one of the most critical identifiers for both living and dead. Forensic professionals in medical and legal matters are often presented with dismembered, disfigured, putrefied, or skeletal remains for analysis. In such situations, it is essential to identify individuals and estimate their ages. The skull is typically the well-preserved part of the body in such situations. If an aged person needs their age officially established for employment, superannuation, pension settlements, senior citizen benefits, etc., they may turn to medical professionals for help in making that det

[Cranial suture ultrasound for reducing radiation exposure in diagnosis of craniosynostosis in young children].

UNLABELLED: Currently, there are no standards for examining patients with suspected craniosynostosis. CT of the brain with 3D skull reconstruction is a common approach to diagnose craniosynostosis in many hospitals. This technique in pediatric patients is associated with a high dose of ionizing radiation and prompts searching for other diagnostic methods. OBJECTIVE: To generalize an experience of cranial suture ultrasound and compare diagnostic capabilities of various ultrasound devices. MATERIAL AND METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed data of cranial suture ultrasound in 49 patients under

Neo-Sagittal Suture Formation After Cranial Vault Remodeling in Sagittal Craniosynostosis.

Craniosynostosis is a condition where the cranial sutures are early fused. Sagittal suture synostosis is found to be the most prevalent. Many techniques ranging from simple suture excision to wide suturectomy have been developed for treating this condition. While repeated fusion of previously excised involved sutures is common, neosuture formation has been identified in many recent reports after craniosynostosis surgery. In this case report, the authors present a finding of the neosuture formation in a patient presented with sagittal craniosynostosis after wide suturectomy with total cranial v

Normative ranges of anthropometric cranial indices and metopic suture closure during infancy.

OBJECTIVE Subjective evaluations typically guide craniosynostosis repair. This study provides normative values of anthropometric cranial indices that are clinically useful for the evaluation of multiple types of craniosynostosis and introduces 2 new indices that are useful in the evaluation and management of metopic and bicoronal synostosis. The authors hypothesize that normative values of the new indices as well as for established measures like the cephalic index can be drawn from the evaluation of CT scans of normal individuals. METHODS High-resolution 3D CT scans obtained in normal infants

Cranial expansion with distraction osteogenesis for multiple-suture synostosis in school-aged children.

Multiple-suture synostosis is a rare condition among patients with craniosynostosis. Their cranial shapes demonstrate various types depending on the fused sutures, and it tends to be less consistent in comparison to single-suture synostosis. The details regarding surgical intervention for multiple-suture synostosis have rarely been documented. This report presents 4 patients with nonsyndromic multiple-suture synostosis who were incidentally diagnosed as school-aged children. The age at the time of the surgery ranged from 7 to 11 years. All of the patients demonstrated digital printings on radi

Data-driven cranial suture growth model enables predicting phenotypes of craniosynostosis.

We present the first data-driven pediatric model that explains cranial sutural growth in the pediatric population. We segmented the cranial bones in the neurocranium from the cross-sectional CT images of 2068 normative subjects (age 0-10 years), and we used a 2D manifold-based cranial representation to establish local anatomical correspondences between subjects guided by the location of the cranial sutures. We designed a diffeomorphic spatiotemporal model of cranial bone development as a function of local sutural growth rates, and we inferred its parameters statistically from our cross-section

Skeletal stem and progenitor cells maintain cranial suture patency and prevent craniosynostosis.

Cranial sutures are major growth centers for the calvarial vault, and their premature fusion leads to a pathologic condition called craniosynostosis. This study investigates whether skeletal stem/progenitor cells are resident in the cranial sutures. Prospective isolation by FACS identifies this population with a significant difference in spatio-temporal representation between fusing versus patent sutures. Transcriptomic analysis highlights a distinct signature in cells derived from the physiological closing PF suture, and scRNA sequencing identifies transcriptional heterogeneity among sutures.

Cranial Suture Closure in Domestic Dog Breeds and Its Relationships to Skull Morphology.

Bulldog-type brachycephalic domestic dog breeds are characterized by a relatively short and broad skull with a dorsally rotated rostrum (airorhynchy). Not much is known about the association between a bulldog-type skull conformation and peculiar patterns of suture and synchondrosis closure in domestic dogs. In this study, we aim to explore breed-specific patterns of cranial suture and synchondrosis closure in relation to the prebasial angle (proxy for airorhynchy and thus bulldog-type skull conformation) in domestic dogs. For this purpose, we coded closure of 18 sutures and synchondroses in 26

Estrogen/estrogen receptor alpha signaling in mouse posterofrontal cranial suture fusion.

BACKGROUND: While premature suture fusion, or craniosynostosis, is a relatively common condition, the cause is often unknown. Estrogens are associated with growth plate fusion of endochondral bones. In the following study, we explore the previously unknown significance of estrogen/estrogen receptor signaling in cranial suture biology. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: Firstly, estrogen receptor (ER) expression was examined in physiologically fusing (posterofrontal) and patent (sagittal) mouse cranial sutures by quantitative RT-PCR. Next, the cranial suture phenotype of ER alpha and ER beta knoc

The effects of fronto-parieto-squamosal suture fusion on cranial growth: an experimental study.

Craniosynostoses have been known for at least 20 centuries, but their etiopathogeneses are still unclear. There are three main theories to explain the etiology of craniosynostosis, Moss's theory being the most popular. According to Moss, the development of the neurocranial form is viewed as an integration of the growth of the skull base, the calvarial bones, the meninges, and the enclosed brain. Experimental studies, however, are generally focused on cranial vault suture synostosis. This study aims to demonstrate the effects of cranial base synostosis by performing fronto-parieto-squamosal sut

In vivo cranial suture function and suture morphology in the extant fish Polypterus: implications for inferring skull function in living and fossil fish.

This study describes the mechanical role that cranial sutures play in fish during feeding. The long-term goal of our work is to establish relationships between suture form and function, so that functional inferences can be made from suture morphology in fossil taxa. To this end, strain gauges were surgically implanted across selected sutures in the skull roof of four individuals of Polypterus endlicherii. After surgery, bone and suture strains during feeding were recorded along with high-speed video of the feeding events. Each trial was designated as a suction feeding or biting on prey trial,

Elevated intracranial pressure with craniosynostosis: a multivariate model of age, syndromic status, and number of involved cranial sutures.

OBJECTIVE: Children with multiple prematurely fused cranial sutures and those undergoing surgical correction later in life appear to experience worse neurocognitive outcomes, but it is unclear whether higher intracranial pressure (ICP) is implicated in this process. The purpose of this study was to elucidate the effect of age at intervention and number of involved cranial sutures on ICP, as well as to assess which cranial suture closure may be more associated with elevated ICP. METHODS: The prospective craniofacial database at the authors' institution was queried for patients undergoing initi
