[An abbreviated version of RDC/TMD].

BACKGROUND: The aim of this study was to develop a short diagnostic test for pain-related craniomandibular disorders (CMD) based on the Research Diagnostic Criteria for Temporomandibular Disorders (RDC/TMD). MATERIAL AND METHOD: Participants included 1,177 CMD patients and 896 general population subjects who were examined according to the RDC/TMD. This new diagnostic short test consisted of a combination of the least amount of RDC/TMD items that distinguished between patients and subjects with a sensitivity of > or =70% and a specificity of > or =90%. The diagnostic test items were selected f…

Effect of upper costal and costo-diaphragmatic breathing types on electromyographic activity of respiratory muscles.

AIM: To compare electromyographic (EMG) activity in young-adult subjects with different breathing types. METHODOLOGY: This study included 50 healthy male subjects with complete natural dentition, and no history of orofacial pain or craniomandibular-cervical-spinal disorders. Subjects were classified into two groups: upper costal breathing type, and costo-diaphragmatic breathing. Bipolar surface electrodes were located on sternocleidomastoid, diaphragm, external intercostal, and latissimus dorsi muscles. Electromyographic activity was recorded during the following tasks: (1) normal quiet breat

The role of stress, occlusion, and condyle position in TMJ dysfunction-pain.

Lateral transcranial TMJ radiographs are duplicable within +/- 0.2 mm and are cross-sectional views of the lateral third of the condyle and fossa. The innate asymmetry of humans, when the right and left sides of the fossa and condyle are compared, was clinically insignificant. Tomograms are not indicated because they lack appropriate resolution and detail to evaluate qualitative bone changes; and because they are not an in-office procedure, the condylar position in the fossa is completely unreliable. A correlation was reported between condylar position in the fossa and TMJ dysfunction in over

Multiple globoid meningiomas associated with craniomandibular fibrous dysplasia: case report.

A 20-year-old male with craniomandibular deformity and almost total visual loss of the right eye due to bilateral optic atrophy underwent cerebral nonenhanced computed tomography (NECT) examinations. He had multiple sphenoidal-temporoparietal meningiomas, with adjacent hyperostoses and distant calvarial hyperdense lesions, as well as sclerotic expansion of right mandibular condyle. History, clinical and imaging findings were suggestive of associated fibrous dysplasia (FD), which explained the visual loss due to optic nerve compression through sphenoidal optic foramens. Cranial and mandibular F

[Do temporomandibular disorders really exist?].

Temporomandibular Disorders (TMD) is a collective term embracing a number of clinical problems that involve the muscles of mastication, the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) and associated structures or both. This group of disorders has been identified as the chief cause of pain, which is not of dental origin, in the orofacial area, and is defined as a subgroup in the category of musculoskeletal disorders. These disorders impair the quality of life of those suffering from them due to the extent of the pain and the chronic nature of its symptoms. It is known that chronic pain causes the development

Zebrafish Erc1b mediates motor innervation and organization of craniofacial muscles in control of jaw movement.

BACKGROUND: Movement of the lower jaw, a common behavior observed among vertebrates, is required for eating and processing food. This movement is controlled by signals sent from the trigeminal motor nerve through neuromuscular junctions (NMJs) to the masticatory muscles. Dysfunctional jaw movements contribute to craniomandibular disorders, yet the pathophysiology of these disorders is not well understood, as limited studies have been conducted on the molecular mechanisms of jaw movement. RESULTS: Using erc1b/kimm533 genetic loss of function mutant, we evaluated lower jaw muscle organization a…

The electromyographic activity of masseter and anterior temporalis during orofacial symptoms induced by experimental occlusal highspot.

The aim of the present study was to investigate the short-term impact of an occlusal highspot on the occurrence of orofacial symptoms by collecting self-evaluation and using electromyography (EMG) evaluation. A rigid unilateral intercuspal occlusal highspot (A cast onlay of 0.5 mm) was placed on the right lower first molar of six adult volunteers (three males, three females), and remained for 6 days. Continuously all the induced orofacial symptoms were collected and the subjects scored the orofacial pain on a 10-cm visual analogue scale (VAS) during the placement of onlay. The surface EMG was

Breathing obstruction in relation to craniofacial and dental arch morphology in 4-year-old children.

The prevalence of breathing obstruction was determined in a cohort of 4-year-old children. Craniofacial morphology was studied in obstructed children and compared with data from a control group of 4-year-old children with ideal occlusion. Dental arch morphology was compared in obstructed and non-obstructed children in the group. Parents of 95.5 per cent of the study base of 644 children answered a questionnaire concerning their child's nocturnal behaviour and related questions. The 48 children who, based on parental report, snored every night or stopped breathing when snoring (the 'snoring gro

Quality of life in obesity hypoventilation syndrome.

The first paper of this issue of Sleep and Breathing reports that the quality of life (QOL) assessed by the SF-36 and the Epworth Sleepiness Scale (ESS) in obesity hypoventilation syndrome (OHS) was compared with age- and body mass index-matched patients without hypoventilation (obese OSA), nonobese OSA patients, and healthy subjects. The QOL in OHS was worst among these four groups. After 3 to 6 months of nasal continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) treatment, the QOL in OHS improved to the normal level similar to the two other OSA groups. We have observed severe nonobese OSA patients wit

Lateral pterygoid muscle and its relationship to the meniscus of the temporomandibular joint.

OBJECTIVE: The theory of internal derangement of the temporomandibular joint involves the anterior displacement of the meniscus, which is thought to be the result of hyperactivity of the lateral pterygoid muscle. There is, however, a great deal of confusion with respect to the attachment of this muscle to the meniscus. This anatomic study reexamines the meniscal attachment of the lateral pterygoid muscle, in particular, the upper head of this muscle. STUDY DESIGN: The anatomic relationship between the lateral pterygoid muscle and the meniscus was examined in the postmortem specimens of 25 mal
