Hospital Outcome of Host Heterogeneity, Organ dysfunction and Trajectory in sepsis (HOHHOT): A cohort study in the critical care unit.

INTRODUCTION: Prognosis estimation is the basis for establishing the personal interventions in sepsis patients. Serum biomarkers are potential tools for predicting the outcomes of sepsis patients admitted to the intensive care unit (ICU). Here, we plan to perform a prospective study to investigate the prognostic value of serum biomarkers. We named this study Hospital Outcome of Host Heterogeneity, Organ dysfunction and Trajectory in sepsis (HOHHOT). METHODS AND ANALYSIS: This prospective cohort study is being performed in several hospitals in the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region between 2025

Frailty, Outcomes, Recovery and Care Steps of Critically Ill Patients (FORECAST): a prospective, multi-centre, cohort study.

PURPOSE: Frailty is common in critically ill patients but the timing and optimal method of frailty ascertainment, trajectory and relationship with care processes remain uncertain. We sought to elucidate the trajectory and care processes of frailty in critically ill patients as measured by the Clinical Frailty Scale (CFS) and Frailty Index (FI). METHODS: This is a multi-centre prospective cohort study enrolling patients ≥ 50 years old receiving life support > 24 h. Frailty severity was assessed with a CFS, and a FI based on the elements of a comprehensive geriatric assessment (CGA) at intensiv

Outcome of critically ill patients with systemic lupus erythematosus from a medical intensive care unit in Southern India.

OBJECTIVE: Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) has become the most prevalent autoimmune condition requiring admission in the intensive care units (ICU) in the last two decades. Here we analysed the clinical outcomes of SLE patients admitted to our ICU between 2011 and 2021, and studied the prognostic role of high-density lipoprotein (HDL) and procalcitonin in those enrolled after August 2019. METHODS: Systemic lupus erythematosus (ACR/SLICC 2012) were enrolled, 72 retrospectively and 30 prospectively. Data on indications for ICU admission, complications, infections, and disease activity were r

Maternal and Fetal Outcome in Pregnant Women With Critical COVID-19 Treated With Tocilizumab in a Tertiary Care Hospital in Dubai.

INTRODUCTION: Pregnancy, complicated by coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), results in higher hospitalization and mortality rate. Pathogenesis of COVID-19 is similar to any other systemic inflammatory condition but results in a cytokine storm of higher magnitude causing severe acute respiratory distress syndrome and multiorgan failure. Tocilizumab, a humanized monoclonal antibody, targets soluble and membrane-bound IL-6 receptors and is used in the treatment of juvenile idiopathic arthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, and cytokine release syndrome. However, studies exploring its role in pregnancy

Association of fine particulate matter exposure with acute noncardiovascular critical illnesses and in-hospital outcomes in patients receiving intensive cardiac care.

BACKGROUND: The effect of short-term exposure to fine particulate matter (PM2.5) on the incidence of acute noncardiovascular critical illnesses (ANCIs) and clinical outcomes is unknown in patients with acute cardiovascular diseases. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective study in 2337 admissions to an intensive cardiac care unit (ICCU) from June 2016 to May 2017. We used the 2-day average PM2.5 concentration before ICCU admission to estimate the individual exposure level, and patients were divided into 3 groups according to the concentration tertiles. Major ANCI was defined as the composite of

An episode-based approach for assessing the impact of dyskalaemia on critical care outcomes - results from a territory-wide cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Dyskalaemias have been reported as an independent prognostic factor for adverse outcomes based on plasma potassium levels upon intensive care unit (ICU) admission or mean potassium levels across ICU stay, but the granular effects of discrete episodes of dyskalaemia have not been extensively studied. METHODS: This retrospective observational cohort study included all adult patients admitted to ICUs in public hospitals in Hong Kong between January 2010 and June 2023. Discrete episodes of dyskalaemia were defined if plasma potassium measurements were beyond the reference range of 3.5
