Patterns of Antibiotic Prescription in Endodontic Therapy in the Republic of Croatia.

In response to the global trend of decreasing antibiotic usage, this study aimed to evaluate the nature and frequency of antibiotic prescriptions in conjunction with endodontic therapy in Croatia and to assess the attitudes of Croatian dental practitioners towards the endodontic treatment of patients susceptible to bacterial endocarditis. A survey questionnaire was sent to all dental practitioners in Croatia, achieving a response rate of 27%. The most frequently prescribed antibiotic was penicillin with clavulanic acid (63.4%), while standalone penicillin was less prevalent (18.6%). For patien

Large Anthrax Outbreak in a New Locality in Croatia, 2022.

Bacillus anthracis is a well-known zoonotic pathogen that can cause disease in both animals and humans. Moreover, it has a high bioterrorism potential as its lethal spores are resistant to inactivation, are easy to produce in large quantities, and are easily spread over large areas. Anthrax cases occur in different parts of the world, including most European countries. Specific areas of Croatia are long known as anthrax districts, but with sporadically reported cases over the years. Here, we present a major outbreak of animal and human anthrax in the region of Lonjsko Polje in Croatia, a regio

Determination of cystatin C reference interval for children in Croatia.

INTRODUCTION: Cystatin C is considered an early marker of kidney damage. The aim was to determine the reference interval in children since this information was not available from the test manufacturer. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Included were children aged 0 to 18 years undergoing routine check without history of any renal disease. Cystatin C was measured by the immunoturbidimetric method, and creatinine by the enzymatic method on a Cobas c501 analyzer (Roche Diagnostics, Manheim, Germany). Reference intervals were determined according to the CLSI C28-A3 guidelines using a robust method and a non

Hepatitis E Virus in Croatia in the "One-Health" Context.

Hepatitis E virus (HEV) is the most common cause of viral hepatitis globally. The first human case of autochthonous HEV infection in Croatia was reported in 2012, with the undefined zoonotic transmission of HEV genotype 3. This narrative review comprehensively addresses the current knowledge on the HEV epidemiology in humans and animals in Croatia. Published studies showed the presence of HEV antibodies in different population groups, such as chronic patients, healthcare professionals, voluntary blood donors and professionally exposed and pregnant women. The highest seroprevalence in humans wa

Evaluation of periodontal status in HIV infected persons in Croatia.

A number of periodontal changes have been associated with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection, however our knowledge of the epidemiology, microbiology, host response and natural history of these conditions remains limited. Therefore, the aim of our study was the assessment of possible differences in periodontal status of HIV infected subjects when compared with healthy controls matched for age, gender and smoking habit in Croatian population. Assessment included measurement of plaque accumulation using approximal plaque index, measurement of gingival inflammation by use of sulcus blee

An analysis of the pollution problem in Slavonski Brod (eastern Croatia).

H2S, PM2.5, O3, NO2, SO2 and meteorological parameters such as temperature, relative humidity, precipitation, wind speed and wind direction were measured simultaneously in an eastern Croatian town called Slavonski Brod during the season winter/spring 2010. Emissions from the nearby cross-border (Bosnia and Herzegovina) oil refinery were identified as sources of temporary elevated concentrations of H2S. The maximum daily averages of PM2.5 concentrations during the winter period were as high as 240 microg m(-3) which is a value 10 times greater than the threshold prescribed by the World Health O

Prevalence of metabolic syndrome in the interior of Croatia: the Baranja region.

Metabolic syndrome (MS), a constellation of metabolic risk factors associated with development of cardiovascular diseases and Type 2 diabetes (T2D), has emerged as a public health problem of enormous proportions in developed and developing countries. We have reported previously its prevalence in several island populations of the Eastern Adriatic coast of Croatia. In spite of leading a relatively traditional life style pattern including adherence to a Mediterranean diet, the prevalence of MS in these populations is high and comparable to that in developed nations. However, data on prevalence of

Sources of infection in childhood tuberculosis in a region of east Croatia.

Possible sources of tuberculosis (TBC) infection in children have been assessed in a retrospective epidemiological study covering a north-east region of Croatia in which the incidence of childhood tuberculosis has been increasing since the war in 1991-1995. During the past decade (1993-2003), 271 children up to 18 years of age have been referred for hospital care because of known contacts with tuberculosis (142 children, group A) or because of indicative clinical signs and symptoms (129 children, group B). Possible sources of infection were identified on the basis of medical documentation and

[Leptospirosis and hemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome in northwestern Croatia].

UNLABELLED: Leptospirosis is a worldwide spread zoonosis, therefore being also present in northwest Croatia. It has been recently discovered that hemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome (HFRS) is present throughout Croatia, not just in the previously well known epidemic foci. Because of the similar clinical presentation and epidemiology of the two diseases, it is important to know the exact etiology of the current disease. The aim of this study was to determine the presentation of HFRS in northwest Croatia and possible coinfection in patients with leptospirosis. PATIENTS AND METHODS: During the

The first fatal case of Mediterranean spotted fever in Croatia.

The first lethal case of Mediterranean spotted fever in Croatia is described. A previously healthy, 58-year-old man was admitted to the hospital with high fever and rash. Several days later, severe anemia, leukopenia and thrombocytopenia developed, and the patient died about eight weeks after the onset of disease. Bone marrow biopsy showed hypercellularity of the cortical and trabecular bone structures with morphologically normal cells of all three hematopoietic lineages that were reduced due to regular nodular infiltrates. Serologic findings indicated that Rickettsia conorii infection was the

Ochratoxin A in human sera in the area with endemic nephropathy in Croatia.

Ochratoxin A (OA) is nephrotoxic fungal metabolite (mycotoxin) occurring in foodstuffs. The compound is causally associated with mycotoxin porcine nephropathy, a disease comparable with a human kidney disease called endemic nephropathy (EN). In this paper we presented results obtained over a 10-year period in the hyperendemic village Kaniza, and in control villages where no clinical cases of nephropathy had been found. In the hyperendemic village Kaniza and non-endemic villages the incidence of OA in human blood was up to 4.5% (range 2-50 ng/ml) and up to 2.4% (range 2-10 ng/ml), respectively.

Assessment of exposure to trichloroethylene and tetrachloroethylene in the population of Zagreb, Croatia.

Human exposure to trichloroethylene (TRI) and tetrachloroethylene (perchloroethylene, PER) through air, food and drinking water was assessed by biological monitoring. By stratified sampling 39 subjects with no known solvent exposure were selected from the residents of the city of Zagreb (the capital of the Republic of Croatia). TRI and PER were determined in blood and their metabolites trichloroethanol (TCE) and trichloroacetic acid (TCA) in plasma and urine. Drinking water samples were also taken for TRI and PER determination. TRI was present in measurable concentrations in 22 subjects (range
