Leeway space and the resolution of crowding in the mixed dentition.

The leeway space provides adequate space to resolve crowding that is present in the mixed dentition in the majority of individuals. This space can be maintained by preserving arch length with a lingual arch as the primary teeth begin to exfoliate, unless conditions such as the premature loss of a primary canine require earlier intervention. A lip bumper can also be inserted after the eruption of the first premolars to preserve arch length.

Dynamical and conformational behavior of a polymer in a crowded solution.

We investigate the structure and dynamics of a polymer in a fluid containing mobile spherical colloidal crowders of radius R. We compare and contrast the behavior with Langevin dynamics (LD) and lattice Boltzmann molecular dynamics (LBMD), the latter incorporating long-range hydrodynamic interactions. Both the colloid size relative to the monomer radius r and the volume fraction ϕ are varied to determine how crowding modifies polymer behavior. Increasing volume fraction induces polymer compaction, with the mechanism strongly dependent on the size ratio R/r. Small colloids primarily modify the

Probabilistic dynamics of small groups in crowd flows.

Pedestrians in crowds frequently move as part of small groups, which can constitute up to 70% of individuals in public spaces. Dyads (groups of two) are most frequent. Understanding quantitatively the dynamics of dyads walking in crowds is therefore an essential building block towards a fundamental comprehension of the crowd behavior as a whole, and is mandatory for accurate crowd dynamics models. Unavoidably, due to the non-deterministic behavior of pedestrians, characterizations of the dynamics must be probabilistic. In this work, we analyse the dynamics of over 6 M dyads: a statistical ense

Three is not a crowd: improving the study of chronic constipation.

BACKGROUND: High-definition anorectal manometry (HD-ARM), balloon expulsion test (BET), and magnetic resonance defecography (MR defecography) are important tools in studying constipation. Our aim was to evaluate the prevalence of functional defecation disorders and structural anorectal alterations in patients with chronic constipation and compare the findings of HD-ARM and BET with MR defecography. METHODS: Retrospective cohort study including patients with functional constipation or irritable bowel syndrome with constipation (IBS-C), refractory to medical therapy, submitted to HD-ARM, BET, a

Emergence of collective oscillations in massive human crowds.

Dense crowds form some of the most dangerous environments in modern society1. Dangers arise from uncontrolled collective motions, leading to compression against walls, suffocation and fatalities2-4. Our current understanding of crowd dynamics primarily relies on heuristic collision models, which effectively capture the behaviour observed in small groups of people5,6. However, the emergent dynamics of dense crowds, composed of thousands of individuals, remains a formidable many-body problem lacking quantitative experimental characterization and explanations rooted in first principles. Here we a

The "Crowd Size Illusion" and the Relativity of Number Perception.

When we investigate busy visual scenes, how do we estimate the number of objects that we see? Most work on number perception answers this question by focusing on properties of the to-be-estimated set of objects-their number, their size, their relative position, and so on. Here, in contrast, we show that perceived number is influenced by extraneous visual information. In six experiments, participants were shown "crowds" of dots that filled "seats" in a visual grid, asking whether the perceived number is influenced not only by the number of occupied seats, but also the number of unoccupied seats

Structural Study of DNA in Simulated Crowded Fluids.

This work studied the structure and hybridization properties of DNA in simulated crowded media containing polyethylene glycol 10,000 and sucrose. Synchrotron radiation circular dichroism revealed that the overall CD profiles of a 21-mer and a d(CG)9 duplex remain similar in the simulated crowded fluids compared with those in Tris buffer, but the amplitude ratios of individual maxima and minima vary with the concentration of DNA and the media, suggesting possible conformational changes. Using fluorescence resonance energy transfer, this work confirmed that hairpin and duplex formations are not

The role of spatial attention in crowding and feature binding.

Crowding refers to the failure to identify a peripheral object due to nearby objects (flankers). A hallmark of crowding is inner-outer asymmetry; that is, the outer flanker (more peripheral) produces stronger interference than the inner one. Here, by manipulating attention, we tested the predictions of two competing accounts: the attentional account, which predicts a positive attentional effect on the inner-outer asymmetry (i.e., attention to the outer flanker will increase asymmetry) and the receptive field size account, which predicts a negative attentional effect. In Experiment 1, observers

The influence of crowding on clinical practice in the emergency department.

BACKGROUND: This study aimed to clarify the association between the crowding and clinical practice in the emergency department (ED). METHODS: This 1-year retrospective cohort study conducted in two EDs in Taiwan included 70,222 adult non-trauma visits during the day shift between July 1, 2011, and June 30, 2012. The ED occupancy status, determined by the number of patients staying during their time of visit, was used to measure crowding, grouped into four quartiles, and analyzed in reference to the clinical practice. The clinical practices included decision-making time, patient length of stay

Finding the face in the crowd: an anger superiority effect.

Facial gestures have been given an increasingly critical role in models of emotion. The biological significance of interindividual transmission of emotional signals is a pivotal assumption for placing the face in a central position in these models. This assumption invited a logical corollary, examined in this article: Face-processing should be highly efficient. Three experiments documented an asymmetry in the processing of emotionally discrepant faces embedded in crowds. The results suggested that threatening faces pop out of crowds, perhaps as a result of a preattentive, parallel search for s

Impact of crowding on aggregation of UV-irradiated βL-crystallin and chaperone like activity of α-crystallin depends of the nature of a crowding agent.

The effect of crowding on the aggregation of UV irradiated βL-crystallin and the chaperone-like activity of α-crystallin has been studied. PEG-20000, BSA and γ-crystallin were used as crowders. It was shown that the initial rate of aggregation of UV irradiated βL-crystallin depended on the type of crowder: the rate did not change in the presence of BSA, doubled when the concentration of γ-crystallin reached 30 mg/ml, and increased linearly with increasing PEG concentration. It was found that PEG is not an inert compound, but causes additional destabilization and denaturation of UV irradiated β

Crowding Effects on Insulin Aggregation Using Synthetic and Mixed Crowders.

Protein aggregation is implicated in several human diseases and presents an important challenge in the development of stable protein therapeutics. Here, we examine how macromolecular crowding affects insulin amyloid aggregation using polyethylene glycol, Dextran-70, and PVP-10, including binary and ternary mixtures. Aggregation was assessed by Thioflavin-T fluorescence and supported by circular dichroism and atomic force microscopy. PEG 10K showed a biphasic response, with increased ThT intensity at low concentration and markedly reduced signals at higher concentrations, whereas PEG 1, 4, and

Spatial attention and central crowding in primary open angle glaucoma.

CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Measuring the impact of spatial attention on signal detection in damaged parts of the visual field can be a useful tool for eye care practitioners. BACKGROUND: Studies on letter perception have shown that glaucoma exacerbates difficulties to detect a target within flankers (crowding) in parafoveal vision. A target can be missed because it is not seen or because attention was not focused at that location. This prospective study evaluates the contribution of spatial pre-cueing on target detection. METHOD: Fifteen patients and 15 age-matched controls were presented with lett

Crowding by Poly(ethylene glycol) Destabilizes Chemotaxis Protein Y (CheY).

The prevailing understanding of various aspects of biochemical processes, including folding, stability, intermolecular interactions, and the binding of metals, substrates, and inhibitors, is derived from studies carried out under dilute and homogeneous conditions devoid of a crowding-related environment. The effect of crowding-induced modulation on the structure and stability of native and magnesium-dependent Chemotaxis Y (CheY), a bacterial signaling protein, was probed in the presence and absence of poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG). A combined analysis from circular dichroism, intrinsic and extri

Macromolecular crowding enhances fibrillin-1 deposition in the extracellular matrix.

Biochemical and biophysical factors need consideration when modelling in vivo cellular behaviour using in vitro cell culture systems. One underappreciated factor is the high concentration of macromolecules present in vivo, which is typically not simulated under standard cell culture conditions. This disparity is especially relevant when studying biochemical processes that govern extracellular matrix (ECM) deposition, which may be altered due to dilution of secreted macromolecules by the relatively large volumes of culture medium required for cell maintenance in vitro. Macromolecular crowding (

Plasmodium oocysts respond with dormancy to crowding and nutritional stress.

Malaria parasites develop as oocysts in the mosquito for several days before they are able to infect a human host. During this time, mosquitoes take bloodmeals to replenish their nutrient and energy reserves needed for flight and reproduction. We hypothesized that these bloodmeals are critical for oocyst growth and that experimental infection protocols, typically involving a single bloodmeal at the time of infection, cause nutritional stress to the developing oocysts. Therefore, enumerating oocysts disregarding their growth and differentiation state may lead to erroneous conclusions about the

Extreme crowding in laying hens during a recurrent smothering outbreak.

BACKGROUND: Piling, a behaviour where hens crowd together, is referred to as smothering if mortalities result. Smothering is a considerable concern for the egg industry, yet is vastly understudied. METHODS: During an outbreak of recurrent smothering, continuous video footage captured a commercial, free-range flock over 35 days. We describe the piling behaviour observed and potential associations with productivity and flock health indicators. RESULTS: Forty-eight piles were filmed, with a maximum density of 187.93 birds/m2 and up to 1204 birds in one pile. Piling occurred in the same house lo
