Neotropical species of ElpidiumF. Müller, 1880 (Crustacea: Ostracoda) introduced into New Caledonia (Melanesia, Pacific Ocean) through ornamental bromeliad trade.

The ostracod genus Elpidium is known so far for South and Insular America and all of its 20 known species are confined to phytotelmata, mostly in tank-bromeliads. These plants, with more than 1200 species in the Atlantic Forest along the eastern shores of Brazil, can be either terrestrial or epiphytic, and occur along a vast altitudinal gradient. In recent decades, an international, even intercontinental, trade in ornamental bromeliads has expanded. These plants can be transported over large distances, and in some cases contain "passenger" taxa in their tanks, mostly insects and crustaceans. H

Mutilation on gill filaments of Piaractus brachypomus (Characiformes: Serrasalmidae) caused by Braga patagonica (Crustacea: Cymothoidae), in the Brazilian Amazon.

Fish aquaculture is one of the main food production sectors for the growing global human population and is currently one of the most profitable production activities. However, parasitic infestations have emerged as a significant factor influencing fish aquaculture production, negatively impacting the profitability of this food production activity. This study aimed to report the mutilation of pirapitinga Piaractus brachypomus gill filaments caused by a Cymothoidae parasite. In April 2022, Piaractus brachypomus were examined at a fish farm in Macapá, state of Amapá, Brazil. The host fish were an

Evaluation of barnacle (Crustacea: Cirripedia) colonisation on different fabrics to support the estimation of the time spent in water by human remains.

The estimation of the time since death (minimum Post Mortem Interval, minPMI) is an essential aspect of forensic investigations. This is particularly complex when a human body is found submerged, floating or beached in a marine environment. When a cadaver is found in a terrestrial environment the minPMI estimation is generally based on the presence of carrion insects. However, when a cadaver is found in an aquatic environment, a correct crime scene reconstruction is more complex and requires the consideration of the time the remains spent submerged underwater (minimum Post Mortem Submersion In

METALLOTHIONEIN EXPRESSION IN A PARASITIC CRUSTACEAN, LAMPROGLENA CLARIAE (CRUSTACEA: COPEPODA), ON CLARIAS GARIEPINUS (TELOESTEI: CLARIIDAE) CORRESPONDS TO WATER QUALITY.

Globally, parasites are sensitive toward environmental changes, and, in some cases, they are even more sensitive than their hosts. However, there is limited knowledge on the physiological responses of parasites and their effects on their hosts in relation to environmental degradation. In this study, metallothioneins (MTs) were isolated and compared between the ectoparasite Lamproglena clariae and its host fish Clarias gariepinus. Differences in the levels of MTs in the parasite and host were compared to physicochemical water quality variables and metals to determine if MT expression was linked

Application of artificial neural network models to analyse the relationships between Gammarus pulex L. (Crustacea, Amphipoda) and river characteristics.

This study aimed at analysing the relationship between river characteristics and abundance of Gammarus pulex. To this end, four methods which can identify the relative contribution and/or the contribution profile of the input variables in neural networks describing the habitat preferences of this species were compared: (i) the "PaD" ("Partial Derivatives") method consists of a calculation of the partial derivatives of the output in relation to the input variables; (ii) the "Weights" method is a computation using the connection weights of the backpropagation Artificial Neural Networks; (iii) th

Some ecological aspects of Ergasilus centrarchidarum Wright (Crustacea: Copepoda) on largemouth and spotted bass in Lake Fort Smith, Arkansas.

Certain ecological aspects of Ergasilus centrarchidarum on largemouth and spotted bass from Lake Fort Smith, Arkansas, were studied during July 1970 through June 1971. There were no significant differences in E. centrarchidarum intensities between host sexes. E. centrarchidarum tended to increase in abundance with the age of the hosts through the first 3 years, then declined in older hosts. Maximum abundance and egg production occurred during the summer months. Optimum temperatures for abundance and egg production ranged from 24 to 29 C. There was no evidence of antagonism among E. centrarchid

A new species of scleractinian associated shrimp of the genus Palaemonella (Crustacea, Decapoda, Palaemonidae) with a redescription of Palaemonella orientalis Dana, 1852.

A new species of Palaemonella, P. rubrolineata sp. nov., is described on the basis of material collected from pocilloporid corals in Indonesia and Vanuatu. The new species is most closely related to P. orientalis, another tropical Indo-West Pacific species usually found in association with pocilloporid and acroporid corals. The new species can be distinguished from P. orientalis based on the presence of a hepatic spine, the more slender rostrum, body and longer appendages, the pleura of the fifth abdominal segment having a posteroventral tooth, the absence of distal rows of long serrate setae

Evaluation of the floating time of a corpse found in a marine environment using the barnacle Lepas anatifera L. (Crustacea: Cirripedia: Pedunculata).

Human activities involving water may result in a crime scene. Typically, death may be due to natural causes, homicide, or mass disasters. Decomposition in water is a complex process where many factors may interplay. Human remains in water are subject to many potential interactions, depending upon the remains themselves, the type of water and the characteristics of the water. A number of studies are focused on the decomposition process of the corpse in water, on the identification of the post mortem submersion interval (PMSI) and on the diagnosis of drowning, but very few studies consider the f

Morphological and molecular identification of epibiontic sessilid Epistylis semiciculus n. sp. (ciliophora, Peritrichia) from Procambarus clarkia (Crustacea, Decapoda) in China.

Data on sessilinasis from Procambarus clarkia are limited. This study investigates sessilid diversity in Hubei Province, China in 2016. Procambarus clarkia pereopods were covered by two sessilid morphotypes in April and May, and the gills were adhered by one of these two morphotypes (morphotype I) in January. Identifying the two morphotypes according to their morphological characters through live observations and protargol-stained method is difficult. Both morphotypes show almost identical morphological characteristics: zooids present vase-shaped, the length-to-width ratio is 2:1, the semicirc
