CASE HISTORY: Four males (age 25 to 40 years) and one female (age 25) were admitted to our hospital almost simultaneously with symptoms of fever up to 38 degrees C, dry cough, thoracodynia, dyspnoea, myalgia and arthralgia. All patients belonged to a team of eight German bat researchers who had returned from Cuba 10 days before, where they had investigated bats in caves. Another member of the team had only mild histoplasmosis and was followed in our outpatient clinic. Two scientists who wore their breathing masks continuously during their work in the caves did not fall ill.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: The Cuban Ministry of Public Health plans to implement the syndromic approach to sexually transmitted diseases in persons with urethral or vaginal syndrome in Cuba using 500 mg ciprofloxacin as therapy. Although the emergence of clinical isolates of Neisseria gonorrhoeae with decreased susceptibility to ciprofloxacin have been sporadically detected in Cuba, there has been no report of isolates that exhibited significant resistance to this drug. This is the first report of the isolation of a N gonorrhoeae strain resistant to ciprofloxacin in Cuba.

Coxiella burnetii is the causative agent of Q fever. In order to explore the occurrence of C. burnetii in ticks, samples were collected from horses, dogs and humans living in a Cuban occidental community. The species most commonly recovered were Amblyomma mixtum (67%), Rhipicephalus sanguineus s.l. (27%) and Dermacentor nitens (6%). We report two cases of chromoblastomycosis due to Fonsecaea pedrosoi and F. monophora in otherwise healthy Cuban males. Direct microscopic examination of biopsies revealed muriform cells, the hallmark of chromoblastomycosis.
