Blunted striatal responses to favorite-food cues in smokers.

BACKGROUND: Although tobacco-smoking is associated with relatively leaner body mass and smoking cessation with weight gain, the brain mechanisms underlying these relationships are not well understood. Smokers compared to non-smokers have shown diminished neural responses to non-tobacco rewarding stimuli (e.g., monetary rewards), but brain responses to favorite-food cues have not been investigated relative to smoking status. We hypothesized that smokers would exhibit diminished neural responses compared to non-smokers in response to favorite-food cues in motivation-reward and emotion-regulating

Failure of neural responses to safety cues in schizophrenia.

CONTEXT Abnormalities in associative memory processes, such as Pavlovian fear conditioning and extinction, have been observed in schizophrenia. The retrieval of fear extinction memories (safety signals) may be particularly affected; although schizophrenic patients can extinguish conditioned fear, they show a deficit in retrieving fear extinction memories after a delay. The neurobiological basis of this abnormality is unknown, but clues have emerged from studies in rodents and humans demonstrating that the ventromedial prefrontal cortex (vmPFC) is a key mediator of extinction memory retrieval.

Location and acoustic scale cues in concurrent speech recognition.

Location and acoustic scale cues have both been shown to have an effect on the recognition of speech in multi-speaker environments. This study examines the interaction of these variables. Subjects were presented with concurrent triplets of syllables from a target voice and a distracting voice, and asked to recognize a specific target syllable. The task was made more or less difficult by changing (a) the location of the distracting speaker, (b) the scale difference between the two speakers, and/or (c) the relative level of the two speakers. Scale differences were produced by changing the vocal

Generating physical symptoms from visual cues: An experimental study.

This experimental study explored whether the physical symptoms of cold, pain and itchiness could be generated by visual cues, whether they varied in the ease with which they could be generated and whether they were related to negative affect. Participants were randomly allocated by group to watch one of three videos relating to cold (e.g. ice, snow, wind), pain (e.g. sporting injuries, tattoos) or itchiness (e.g. head lice, scratching). They then rated their self-reported symptoms of cold, pain and itchiness as well as their negative affect (depression and anxiety). The researcher recorded the

Extranodal NK/T-cell lymphoma: diagnosis and treatment cues.

Extranodal NK/T-cell lymphoma, nasal type (ENKL) is mostly endemic to East Asia. It predominantly occurs in the nasal or paranasal areas and less frequently in the skin. Most of the tumours show NK-cell, but rarely T-cell, phenotypes. The Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) genome can be usually detected in lymphoma cells. Geographic localization of ENKL matches the endemic distribution of EBV, suggesting that EBV plays an important role in lymphomagenesis. Originally, NK-cell and T-cell types were believed to present the same clinicopathologic characteristics, but recent data suggest more aggressive cha

Lack of startle modulation by smoking cues in smokers.

RATIONALE: The startle reflex methodology has been used to study the effects of nicotine in humans and the motivational effects of smoking cues in smokers. However, no other studies investigate startle modulation by smoking cues in smokers compared to non-smokers. In the other studies, smoking deprivation was manipulated in smokers or smokers were not compared directly to non-smokers. OBJECTIVE: The goal of this study was to examine the temporal course of information processing following the presentation of a smoking-related cue using the startle probe methodology in smokers compared to non-s

Binaural weighting of pinna cues in human sound localization.

Human sound localization relies on binaural difference cues for sound-source azimuth and pinna-related spectral shape cues for sound elevation. Although the interaural timing and level difference cues are weighted to produce a percept of sound azimuth, much less is known about binaural mechanisms underlying elevation perception. This problem is particularly interesting for the frontal hemifield, where binaural inputs are of comparable strength. In this paper, localization experiments are described in which hearing for each ear was either normal, or spectrally disrupted by a mold fitted to the

LHRH neuronal migration: heterotypic transplantation analysis of guidance cues.

During embryonic development, the olfactory placode (OP) differentiates into the olfactory epithelium (OE). Luteinizing hormone-releasing hormone (LHRH) neurons migrate out of the OE in close association with the olfactory nerve (ON) to the telencephalon. LHRH neuronal migration and ON extension to the telencephalon may be independent events which are correlated but do not represent a causal relationship. However, we hypothesize that LHRH neurons are dependent on ON axons to migrate to the brain. To test this hypothesis, we ablated the right trigeminal placode and replaced it with an OP from a

Visual form discrimination from texture cues: a PET study.

With the purpose of localising the cerebral cortical areas participating in the discrimination of visual form generated exclusively by texture cues, we measured changes in regional cerebral blood flow (rCBF) with positron emissions tomography (PET) and 15O-butanol as the tracer. The subjects performed two odd-one-out discrimination tasks: a form-from-texture discrimination task (in which a visual form was defined by differences in texture) and its reference task, the discrimination of texture. During task performance, activated fields were present bilaterally in the primary visual cortex and i

Association of visual objects and olfactory cues in Drosophila.

Context-dependent preferences in a choice between an upper and a lower visual object of otherwise identical appearance were recorded during stationary flight of the fruitfly, Drosophila melanogaster, in a flight simulator. The test animal was held in a fixed orientation at the center of a wing-beat processor that converts attempted turns into counter-rotations of a surrounding cylindrical panorama. This allowed the fly to maneuver the preferred object into the actual direction of flight. Single flies were trained to avoid a course toward the visual object that had been associated with the aver

Changing environmental cues reduces tolerance to nicotine-induced anorexia.

Male rats on a 22-h food deprivation schedule were injected daily with a low dose of nicotine and allowed to drink sweetened milk for 10 min in a test cage in the colony room. Nicotine initially suppressed milk intake but complete tolerance developed within 10 days so that the amount of intake did not differ from saline controls. The role of temporal cues was tested on the next day by changing the timing of cues, and omitting others that normally preceded nicotine injection while keeping constant the physical environment within which injection and testing took place and the drug-test interval.

Dynamic trajectory cues drive sequenced integration in approach detectors.

Detecting approaching objects is essential for survival, and studies across animals have identified neurons and circuits selective for objects that grow in size over time, a hallmark of visual approach. However, approach as a physical process generates a rich ensemble of correlated cues governed by geometry and physics, of which size expansion is just one, and how the brain incorporates this broader cue structure to detect approach remains unknown. Here, we show that a visual stimulus without size expansion but with modulated luminance, a cue intrinsic to approach, elicits compelling percepts

The effect of physical cues on platelet storage lesion.

BACKGROUND: Platelet concentrates play an important role in clinical treatment such as platelet function disorders and thrombocytopenia. In the process of preparation and storage of platelets, centrifugation, leukofiltration, and agitation will cause morphological changes and impaired function of platelets, which is associated with the increase of platelet transfusion refractoriness, and named as platelet storage lesion (PSL). METHOD: This paper proposes three major operations (centrifugation, agitation, and leukofiltration) that platelets experience during the preparation and storage process

Wild fish use visual cues to recognize individual divers.

Many animal species have been shown to discriminate between individual humans in captive settings and may use a variety of cues to do so. Empirical evidence remains scarce for animals in the wild, however, particularly in aquatic contexts. For the first time, we investigated discrimination of individual humans by fish in the wild. We first trained two species of fish, saddled sea bream Oblada melanura and black sea bream Spondyliosoma cantharus, to follow a human diver to obtain a food reward. We then investigated whether they could discriminate between two human divers and follow the correct

Cocaine Cues Used in Experimental Research: A Systematic Review.

Aims: Cue exposure therapy (CET) is a promising treatment approach for cocaine substance use disorder (SUD). CET specifically targets the psychological and physiological responses elicited by drug-related cues, aiming to reduce their motivational impact. To advance understanding of CET for cocaine treatment, this systematic review aims to categorise the range of cocaine cues used in research. Methods: A systematic review of the existing literature with searches conducted on PubMed and Web of Science bibliographic databases with no time constraints in August 2024 (PROSPERO: CRD42024554361). Detecting ulterior motives from verbal cues in group deliberations.

INTRODUCTION: Forensic interviewing entails practitioners interviewing suspects to secure valid information and elicit confessions. Such interviews are often conducted in police stations but may also occur in field settings such as border crossings, security checkpoints, bus terminals, and sports venues. Because these real-world interviews often lack experimental control and ground truth, this investigation explored whether results of non-forensic interviews generalize to forensic ones. METHODS: Organizational espionage was simulated to determine (1) what verbal signals distinguish truth from

Coregistration of heading to visual cues in retrosplenial cortex.

Spatial cognition depends on an accurate representation of orientation within an environment. Head direction cells in distributed brain regions receive a range of sensory inputs, but visual input is particularly important for aligning their responses to environmental landmarks. To investigate how population-level heading responses are aligned to visual input, we recorded from retrosplenial cortex (RSC) of head-fixed mice in a moving environment using two-photon calcium imaging. We show that RSC neurons are tuned to the animal's relative orientation in the environment, even in the absence of he

ANTXR1 as a potential sensor of extracellular mechanical cues.

Cell adhesion molecules mediate cell-cell or cell-matrix interactions, some of which are mechanical sensors, such as integrins. Emerging evidence indicates that anthrax toxin receptor 1 (ANTXR1), a newly identified cell adhesion molecule, can also sense extracellular mechanical signals such as hydrostatic pressure and extracellular matrix (ECM) rigidity. ANTXR1 can interact with ECM through connecting intracellular cytoskeleton and ECM molecules (just like integrins) to regulate numerous biological processes, such as cell adhesion, cell migration or ECM homeostasis. Although with high structur

Infants' use of motion cues in object individuation processes.

We investigated 10-month-old infants' and adults' numerical expectations in scenarios where information on self-motion and static object features may give rise to numerically incongruent representations. A red circle or a blue box with yellow stripes appeared on the left side of a screen, moved autonomously sideways and then moved back behind the screen. Next, on the opposite side, an identical object was first brought in view by a hand and then pushed back behind the screen (Experiments 1 and 2). The screen was finally removed, revealing either one or two objects. Infants looked longer at one

Effects of topographical guidance cues on osteoblast cell migration.

Cell migration is a fundamental process that is crucial for many biological functions in the body such as immune responses and tissue regeneration. Dysregulation of this process is associated with cancer metastasis. In this study, polydimethylsiloxane platforms with various topographical features were engineered to explore the influence of guiding patterns on MC3T3-E1 osteoblast cell migration. Focusing on the guiding effects of grating patterns, variations such as etch depth, pattern discontinuity, and bending angles were investigated. In all experiments, MC3T3-E1 cells on patterned surfaces
