When Social Skills Backfire: Social Media Overuse as a Pathway Linking Social Competence and Health Across Cultures.

This study investigates how self-presentation and social skills relate to physical health among university students in Japan and Hong Kong, with particular attention to the mediating roles of social media use and social support. We conducted two online surveys; as a result, 452 participants in Japan and 289 participants in Hong Kong were analyzed using multi-group structural equation modeling. Across both samples, social skills were directly associated with increased physical symptoms, and this direct association was substantially stronger than the indirect association through social support,

A Method to Generate and Rescue Recombinant Adenovirus Devoid of Replication-Competent Particles in Animal-Origin-Free Culture Medium.

Adenoviruses are promising vectors for vaccine production and gene therapy. Despite all the efforts in removing animal-derived components such as fetal bovine serum (FBS) during the production of adenovirus vector (AdV), FBS is still frequently employed in the early stages of production. Conventionally, first-generation AdVs (E1 deleted) are generated in different variants of adherent HEK293 cells, and plaque purification (if needed) is performed in adherent cell lines in the presence of FBS. In this study, we generated an AdV stock in SF-BMAdR (A549 cells adapted to suspension culture in seru

Effects of individual or in-combination antioxidant supplementation during in vitro maturation culture on the developmental competence and quality of porcine embryos.

The oocyte maturation process requires a high supply of energy, which generates reactive oxygen species (ROS), adversely affecting oocyte and embryo development. Balancing ROS by antioxidant supplementation is essential for maintaining oocyte maturation and embryonic quality in vitro. This study aimed to evaluate the impact of four antioxidants: β-mercaptoethanol (β-ME), chlorogenic acid (CGA), curcumin and sericin, when applied individually or in combinations, during oocyte maturation on development of porcine oocytes. Cumulus-oocyte complexes were collected, cultured in maturation medium sup

Moving towards culturally competent health systems for migrants? Applying systems thinking in a qualitative study in Malaysia and Thailand.

BACKGROUND: Cultural competency describes interventions that aim to improve accessibility and effectiveness of health services for people from ethnic minority backgrounds. Interventions include interpreter services, migrant peer educators and health worker training to provide culturally competent care. Very few studies have focussed on cultural competency for migrant service use in Low- and Middle-Income Countries (LMIC). Migrants and refugees in Thailand and Malaysia report difficulties in accessing health systems and discrimination by service providers. In this paper we describe stakeholder

To Keep this Disease from Killing You: Cultural Competence, Consonance, and Health among HIV-positive Women in Kenya.

The HIV/AIDS crisis continues in sub-Saharan Africa, where nearly 70% of infections are found. Despite recent efforts to supply antiretroviral therapy to those infected, most are not receiving medication and are forced to rely on self-management to remain healthy. In Kenya, many of those infected are women living in extreme poverty. This article presents the findings of research among poor women in Nairobi that examined the relationship between knowledge of a cultural model of self-managing HIV/AIDS, cultural consonance, and health. This biocultural study expands on earlier findings showing th

Integrating Theory, Content, and Method to Foster Critical Consciousness in Medical Students: A Comprehensive Model for Cultural Competence Training.

Many efforts to design introductory "cultural competence" courses for medical students rely on an information delivery (competence) paradigm, which can exoticize patients while obscuring social context, medical culture, and power structures. Other approaches foster a general open-minded orientation, which can remain nebulous without clear grounding principles. Medical educators are increasingly recognizing the limitations of both approaches and calling for strategies that reenvision cultural competence training. Successfully realizing such alternative strategies requires the development of com

Mitochondrial activity during pre-maturational culture in in vitro-grown bovine oocytes is related to maturational and developmental competences.

The objective of this study was to investigate the dynamics of mitochondrial activity in in vitro-grown (IVG) bovine oocytes during pre-maturational culture (pre-IVM) and its relationship to their developmental competence upon being subjected to different pre-IVM durations. After 12-day IVG culture, oocytes were cultured for 0, 10 or 20h with 3-isobutyl-1-methylxanthine (IBMX) as pre-IVM. Mitochondrial activity in IVG oocytes after 10h pre-IVM was the highest among all the pre-IVM durations (P<0.05). In addition, cleavage (79.4%) and blastocyst rates (38.9%) of embryos derived from IVG oocytes

An examination of the living conditions of urban American Indian children in unmarried families: increasing cultural competence in child welfare.

The past 50 years have revealed dramatically shifting trends in the familial structure of American society. When examining these trends, and family research in general, the American Indian family unit has received little to no attention. This study utilized data from the Fragile Families and Child Wellbeing Study to examine the living conditions of urban American Indian children in unmarried families. Results showed that while these children appear to have a strong start, concerns are raised regarding American Indian mothers' low educational achievement and high incidence of poverty. These con

Prematuration of human denuded oocytes in a three-dimensional co-culture system: effects on meiosis progression and developmental competence.

BACKGROUND: During conventional in vitro maturation (IVM), oocytes undergo nuclear maturation but do not attain full cytoplasmic maturity. The present study aimed to evaluate the quality of denuded in vitro matured human oocytes (= 'rescue IVM') following a prematuration culture (PMC) in a three-dimensional (3D) co-culture system with cumulus cells. METHODS: Denuded, germinal vesicle (GV) oocytes retrieved from controlled ovarian hyperstimulation (COH) cycles were embedded in collagen (Type I) gel containing dissociated cumulus cells and a specific phosphodiesterase 3-inhibitor (PDE3-I) for 2

Assessing undergraduate nursing students' knowledge, attitudes, and cultural competence in caring for lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender patients.

Lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) patients experience barriers to health care that include fear of discrimination, as well as insensitivity and lack of knowledge about LGBT-specific health needs among providers. This study examined the effectiveness of an educational intervention designed to improve knowledge and attitudes of baccalaureate nursing students regarding LGBT patient care. Education focused on key terminology, health disparities, medical needs of transgender patients, and culturally sensitive communication skills for competent LGBT patient care. Optimising clinical practice in cancer genetics with cultural competence: lessons to be learned from ethnographic research with Chinese-Australians.

Hereditary cancer is about families, and clinicians and genetic counsellors need to understand the cultural beliefs of patients and families about cancer and inheritance. In the light of their kinship patterns Chinese-Australians were chosen for the present study, which aims to determine the explanatory models of inheritance, cancer, and inherited cancer, with a view to identifying the relationship between these culture-specific lay attributions and help-seeking behaviour, and to identify possible barriers to genetic counselling and testing. Differential effects of octylphenol, 17beta-estradiol, endosulfan, or bisphenol A on the steroidogenic competence of cultured adult rat Leydig cells.

In the current studies, we evaluated the effects of 4-tert-octylphenol (OP), endosulfan, bisphenol A (BPA), and 17beta-estradiol on basal or hCG-stimulated testosterone formation by cultured Leydig cells from young adult male rats. Exposure of Leydig cells to increasing concentrations of OP (1 to 2000 nM), 17beta-estradiol (1 to 1000 nM), endosulfan (1 to 1000 nM) or BPA (1 to 1000 nM), alone or with 10 mIU/mL hCG for 4 or 24 h, did not lower ambient testosterone levels, although cells exposed to higher OP concentrations + hCG for 24 h often had modest declines in testosterone (10 to 20%). Development and validation of the Social Emotional Assets (SEA) scale: a culturally responsive measure of social-emotional competencies in emerging adulthood.

Social emotional competencies in children and youth are associated with academic and psychological wellbeing. However, application to post-secondary students has been limited, and measures have been centered on the white, middle-class experience. Emerging adulthood is a time of heightened emotionality, instability, and relationship vulnerability. Therefore, the development of social emotion competences in post-secondary students could promote healthy self-regulatory and interpersonal skills. The aim of this work was to develop a culturally sensitive measure of social and emotional competencies

In vitro gametogenesis: Towards competent oocytes: Limitations and future improvements for generating oocytes from pluripotent stem cells in culture.

Production of oocytes from pluripotent cell cultures in a dish represents a new paradigm in stem cell and developmental biology and has implications for how we think about life. The spark of life for the next generation occurs at fertilization when sperm and oocyte fuse. In animals, gametes are the only cells that transmit their genomes to the next generation. Oocytes contain in addition a large cytoplasm with factors that direct embryonic development. Reconstitution of mouse oocyte and embryonic development in culture provides experimental opportunities and facilitates an unprecedented unders
